Well I wasn't really interested in a trial of my peers, just a discussion about these type of thrills and what you'd describe them as and such. Some of you seem to have indulged in that most ancient of thrills. Burn the Heretic!

Yep - I shoplifted once. I was maybe 12..............

If you all did what I did many more of them would be employed in those store windows that are no empty and full of dust on your small town mainstreets.
Do you really care about them or following the groupthink of the day?

Lol that made me giggly how off the charts wrong it is.

Is it? Well, OK. I can't always find my way into certain buzzes people have. I have to resort to any experience that might even remotely help. I did nick things when I was a kid. Later, I got a certain buzz from other little things that could be done that 'were not done', as it were.

You're right Tamaka, this happens especially in America where wages are so low.
I guess it is a bit selfish not to consider that direct implication but no more selfish than so many other things we all do.

But no more selfish than what other things we all do, if i may ask? I wonder what types of things you are thinking about when you say this?

I've never been accused of following 'groupthink'.

If we all did what you do, there would be many more stores closed down and people without work.
I don't see that as beneficial at all in any society.

You are a sick fuck and delusional.

I don't find it funny. It's sick!

Are you aware that many workers, apart from losing bonuses, would actually get their wages CUT if there are too many losses??

And there will be cases where people lose their kids because they aren't earning enough to keep them properly?
Or lose their house because they can no longer afford the rent?
Or can't get their kids to a doctor because they can't afford it?

These problems are not caused by shoplifters.

And to the OP, there is a reason why 1% control 90% of the money. It is because that way, no matter what the other 99% do, financially they are powerless to change anything. Whether one plays by the rules... or not.

To get things in proportion, though, that sort of petty pilfering is as nothing next to the activities of rapacious shareholders and the drive for profit in general. The biggest thieves of all stay free - think Robert Maxwell (who plundered his workers' pension fund) and, currently, Philip Green, whose 'British Home Stores' went bust and whose workers are now all ditched as a result. Green is still fabulously wealthy ... and no sign that he'll end up in jail.

Myself, I tend to think: shoplifting isn't noble or even usually clever, but neither is it a heinous offence against us all. It makes a teensy difference in the greater scheme of things. One shoplifter, even a chronic one, is less of a menace to society than one bloke who likes to speed in his car, for instance. That latter is a *very* common buzz, too.

I worked for a store that bought $50,000 worth of Christmas decorations that were thrown in the dumpster after Christmas because they didn't sell. So i wonder what would actually happen if we all did what he does.

You're right Tamaka. Which is why I am just enjoying my slightly mischievous little fun. We are all sinners and our little individual actions don't matter much. Almost all boycotts have failed. Almost. Which shows the real power of the consumer - or thief - in any direction.

Different actions are necessary for that type of thing...

I think people tend to be somewhat clearer about their moral opinions than their knowledge of economics, tamaka.

If everyone did what I did Walmart would become a prison complex or would see failing results and the main streets of towns and cities would once again blossom and community would return. But everyone will not do it ;-) So It is pointless to argue "ifs" in this case.

I think it's more the absurd attempts to contrive a moral high ground around petty crimes that people are taking issue with than the minor offences in question.

But you're a fool, again. It's not a moral high-ground it is at the very least a moral flat-ground.

You are trying to justify it when we are saying it's just plain wrong. Stupidly wrong.

As for the xmas decorations - that would be a tax write-off.
They don't lose a penny.

Yes that is always useful i suppose. Make sure the crowd has a deep abiding sense of morality and little understanding about the rest.

Interestingly enough, whether the decorations were thrown out or stolen, the accounting for it would be the same. It is categorized under Cost of Goods Sold.

Yes but 50 000 thousand dollars worth of christmas stuff got thrown away instead of being distributed you thick dwarf.

Why go thru the cost of distributing it??
Distribution costs time, money, organisation and people.

Just write it off as unsold merchandise.
It's just one entry in a ledger and takes no time or effort to do.

Who's being thick here??

No, of course you do that. The point is it is a net waste for the actual productive economy Adam Smith worked on and not the Chicago School bullshit that ignores waste of labour, resources, time, etc, as long as the books are green.

Unsold merchandise is still accounted for as COGS. They could have priced everything at 25cents a piece instead of throwing it away. I am sure it would have been gone in a day if they did that. But instead it got tossed away.
