Interestingly enough, whether the decorations were thrown out or stolen, the accounting for it would be the same. It is categorized under Cost of Goods Sold.

Actually, it's not the same.

If stolen, it has to be reported to the police and the insurance company.
Until declared by the police that it was in fact stolen, it stays on the the books as an asset that remains taxable.
If there are too many 'thefts', the insurance company may hike the premiums.
They can't reclaim the full cost from the insurance company because of the 'excess' on the policy - and that isn't tax deductible.

So there's a big difference to whether something is reported as stolen or just written off against tax.

Unsold merchandise is still accounted for as COGS. They could have priced everything at 25cents a piece instead of throwing it away. I am sure it would have been gone in a day if they did that. But instead it got tossed away.

It's their merchandise to do with as they please.
They have no fucking obligation to account to anybody what they do with it.

If they want to toss it instead of selling it cheap - that's their decision. Not yours.

I wasn't thinking about it being stolen all at once. I was following along the lines of this thread talking about shoplifting. If it had been stolen a little at a time, the accounting for it would have been the same.

It is true that it is their choice on what they do with their inventory. What is more interesting is when next year the same thing happens again. At least China is getting their money.

If everyone did what I did Walmart would become a prison complex or would see failing results and the main streets of towns and cities would once again blossom and community would return. But everyone will not do it ;-) So It is pointless to argue "ifs" in this case.

You were nice enough to share a story from your life. I'll share one from mine. True story, btw, just in case you are wondering.

I went to the demon Walmart a couple of weeks back. (Yes, I know some people think even going in there is horrible.) I needed four or five things. One of which was eyeliner. The other was milk.

I go about picking up these odds and ends, maybe eight things in the cart when I take myself to where the cosmetics are to get the eyeliner (Maybelline is pretty much the same no matter where you buy it) before I plan to get milk (being the perishable) last.

Guess what? It doesn't work that way anymore. They have a lovely cashier that stands right at the exit to the mostly enclosed cosmetic aisle who's job is, primarily, make sure people pay for the stuff they have picked up in the cosmetic department. Now, you either pay at the cosmetic counter ORRRR that nice cashier will put the things you intend to buy in this little box that they LOCK, until you can go finish your shopping and you can have the other cashier call for it when you're done.

We could discuss whether this is an inconvenience to everyone or not. I'll tell you what I did discuss. When this nice lady told me about this policy, I just looked at her and said, "too many thefts, huh?" Left my cart with her. Ran to the back to get milk.

Between us, I really don't fit the stereotype of what people *think* a shoplifter of cosmetics would look like. (I know, there are little old ladies that steal, too.) I really DO look like a Grandma of a certain age. Nothing about me that would make people think I'm going to rip off an eight dollar eyeliner.

The woman did tell me in just those few minutes (nobody else was waiting to check out) how the customers treat the cashiers like sh^t because it's become part of their job to be the anit-theft defense. She told me a couple of examples that would fit the 'you'd be surprised' category.

That result isn't brought about because one person steals one little thing. It's because a whole bunch of somebody's do their lifting of one item 'cause it's not a big deal, or it's only a few dollars, or they are sticking it to the company.

They don't give a flying fudge at our Walmarts. I've never heard of a separate checkout counter other than at the garden center and you don't have to check out there. So strange.

Wow. It is having effect. Soon they will become so annoying and it will be so cumbersome to shop there that hopefully the whole thing would collapse.

I mean it is a fantastic story but it actually makes me think shoplifting is doing some good instead of just doing nothing.

What granny would want to be treated like a theft suspect and have their shopping so closely monitored without having done anything wrong?

I mean most are probably little wannabe gangsters or poor people but who cares... Anyway IM out of this thread! Enjoy.

Indeed. You are an oddball. But not a dangerous one, and there aren't many people like you. So it's a piffling thing, as far as I can see. I can't be arsed to bother my moral sensitivities on what you do one way or the other, to be honest.

It's amazing that you said that. I didn't even include it in my post because I was trying to avoid being too wordy.

The gal's normal spot was lawn and garden. She was covering a lunch break.

You wouldn't think lawn and garden would be the place where people would try to hide big things under their coats. Stuff I'd probably look ridiculous trying to 'hide' because I'm only 5'2" and my torso is short. I could just imagine what I'd look like trying to sneak out a basin of a fountain.

Instead of looking at it so personally, consider it as an intellectual debate... a philosophical discussion... how could david beat goliath if it wanted to.

It was... Odd.

However, it's really rare that I give people a hard time for something that is related to their job. When somebody's just trying to earn a living, it's usually not their idea when somebody doesn't like something.

I know you are splitting, but I was thinking you might like this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Something_Wall-Mart_This_Way_Comes

I haven't looked at it either personally or intellectually, Numerans. It isn't important to me one way or the other. It's just another buzz to me, though a relatively unusual one here, I grant you. For the same reason I'll have to leave it to others to go into a philosophical discussion about it, should they want to.

Is there a term for it? Well, there are a few that apply to specific things..

going to forbidden places = trespasser
shoplifting = thief
bringing sharp objects on planes = I don't know if there is a single word for "someone prepared to risk never being allowed to fly on a plane again"

Meh! I have seen worse threads; hell I even started a few of them myself.

I do not condone breaking the law

I once stole chocolate when I was 14. It was delicious.

Sex in the great outdoors is exhilarating, well over here it is and the 40-100mph lick at their bodies, lashed with horizontal rain, by streams and waterfalls, bent over an olde stone brdge the likes of you see no more but what mylands have in vast abudence

1. 12 years since I last have, and I’ve did that few times in my life 4 actually – sad face oh that didn’t take long to count och well.
2. I once drove, not far, to a view point in Carron valley – you either know where this is or you do not, to peer at the stars and milkway and fuk me the car park was full of doggers

But in essence I think sex outdoors should be allowed as long as you do not offend “public decency” so it must be done somewhere secluded.

Whist I actually fair liked your thread Numerans, I was fair disappointed with the rest of your contribution to it. Are you having fun with some of them on here? Not something I will overlook and there are only three things anywhere I never overlook. But me and the council of cats decided they were unfair on thee first so do as you must

1) I get a huge rush and love the sensation and atmosphere in general from going to forbidden places or shoplifting or even attempting to smuggle things or bring things that are forbidden. Taking pictures of art while avoiding camera angles in museums, bringing sharp objects on planes, rolls of money etc.

2) I have yet to be caught :-)

3) If I found the right person I would love to fuck somewhere forbidden, just out of reach from the public eye.

1) Addressing the shoplifting. I don't give a crap how you think you can justify your theft. If I see it, you're getting reported and I'll happily appear as a witness at your trial to aid the prosecution. Luckily for you, the Atlantic Ocean makes that a dim possibility.

2) YET.

3) Don't even consider it. If there's even the remotest possibility that children may be exposed, you really don't want that on your record.
