ORIGINAL: Numerans If everyone did what I did Walmart would become a prison complex or would see failing results and the main streets of towns and cities would once again blossom and community would return. But everyone will not do it ;-) So It is pointless to argue "ifs" in this case. You were nice enough to share a story from your life. I'll share one from mine. True story, btw, just in case you are wondering. I went to the demon Walmart a couple of weeks back. (Yes, I know some people think even going in there is horrible.) I needed four or five things. One of which was eyeliner. The other was milk. I go about picking up these odds and ends, maybe eight things in the cart when I take myself to where the cosmetics are to get the eyeliner (Maybelline is pretty much the same no matter where you buy it) before I plan to get milk (being the perishable) last. Guess what? It doesn't work that way anymore. They have a lovely cashier that stands right at the exit to the mostly enclosed cosmetic aisle who's job is, primarily, make sure people pay for the stuff they have picked up in the cosmetic department. Now, you either pay at the cosmetic counter ORRRR that nice cashier will put the things you intend to buy in this little box that they LOCK, until you can go finish your shopping and you can have the other cashier call for it when you're done. We could discuss whether this is an inconvenience to everyone or not. I'll tell you what I did discuss. When this nice lady told me about this policy, I just looked at her and said, "too many thefts, huh?" Left my cart with her. Ran to the back to get milk. Between us, I really don't fit the stereotype of what people *think* a shoplifter of cosmetics would look like. (I know, there are little old ladies that steal, too.) I really DO look like a Grandma of a certain age. Nothing about me that would make people think I'm going to rip off an eight dollar eyeliner. The woman did tell me in just those few minutes (nobody else was waiting to check out) how the customers treat the cashiers like sh^t because it's become part of their job to be the anit-theft defense. She told me a couple of examples that would fit the 'you'd be surprised' category. That result isn't brought about because one person steals one little thing. It's because a whole bunch of somebody's do their lifting of one item 'cause it's not a big deal, or it's only a few dollars, or they are sticking it to the company.
