Personally, i hate driving. I can't believe they spend $1000/month to chaueffer women around! I wonder if they'll actually allow women to drive anytime soon.

Let women drive, urges Saudi prince
AFP
Ian Timberlake 11 hours ago
Riyadh (AFP) - An outspoken billionaire Saudi prince has called for an "urgent" end to his country's ban on women driving, saying it is a matter not just of rights but of economic necessity.

"Stop the debate: Time for women to drive," Prince Alwaleed bin Talal said on his official Twitter account.

Alwaleed is an unusually forthright member of Saudi Arabia's extensive royal family.

He holds no political posts but chairs Kingdom Holding Co., which has interests including in US banking giant Citigroup and the Euro Disney theme park.

He is a longtime advocate of women's rights in the conservative Islamic kingdom, which has some of the world's tightest restrictions on women and is the only country where they are not allowed to drive.

In conjunction with his short tweet, Alwaleed's office issued an uncharacteristically long statement late Tuesday outlining his reasons for supporting an end to the ban.

"Preventing a woman from driving a car is today an issue of rights similar to the one that forbade her from receiving an education or having an independent identity," Alwaleed said.

"They are all unjust acts by a traditional society, far more restrictive than what is lawfully allowed by the precepts of religion."

He also detailed the "economic costs" of women having to rely on foreign private drivers or taxis, since public transit is not a viable alternative in the kingdom.

Using foreign drivers drains billions of dollars from the Saudi economy, Alwaleed said.

He calculated that families spend an average of 3,800 riyals ($1,000/940 euros) a month on a driver, money which otherwise could help household incomes at a time when many are making do with less.

Even if their husbands can take time out to transport the women, that requires temporarily leaving the office and "undermines the productivity of the workforce," Alwaleed said.

"Having women drive has become an urgent social demand predicated upon current economic circumstances."

The prince said he is making his call on behalf of those with "limited means".

Activists say women's driving is not technically illegal but that the ban is linked to tradition and custom.

Some women have challenged the prohibition by getting behind the wheel and posting images of themselves online.

A slow expansion of women's rights began under the late king Abdullah, who in 2013 named them to the Shura Council which advises cabinet.

Abdullah also announced that women could for the first time vote and run in municipal elections, which were held last December.

These and other decisions were initially opposed by "certain elements" in Saudi society but soon became accepted, Alwaleed said, calling for "a similarly decisive" political act.

In April, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said change cannot be forced, and "it is up to Saudi society."

In Alwaleed's view, however, "what cannot be allowed is to have one segment imposing its preferences on the rest of society."

Sahar Hassan Nasief, a women's rights activist in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, said the appeal from such an influential figure could help to bring about change.

"Everybody's talking about him," she told AFP. "I think his comments gave us a lot of hope."

well, that is not really much more than owning an average vehicle and driving it yourself here in the US.. ymmv, of course.. but many people are spending a ton on their vehicles and driving costs.. and they dont even get a driver for that! So getting a driver to drive you around for not much more isnt really that bad a deal.. Give me a driver any day! I have saved a lot of money & my sanity by not having a vehicle, not having to deal with repairs and breakdowns, dealing with pollution testing, pumping gas, dealing with insurance companies, speeding tickets, driving in circles looking for parking, parking tickets, crazy drivers & road ragers, etc, etc.. Its quite nice to have driver..

i feel that as the prince stating that he is wanting change in the society is a positive sign of things to come. as saudi arabia is the home of mecca it will influence the other countries that are predominately islamic to initiate changes in there own societies.
i have been to saudi arabia and afganistain and Bahrain. there is such wonderful history and rich cultures there not just islam.
it is the terrorists that are to be reviled

I have a friend who lives in new york city. She was 69 years old before she ever got a drivers license. The reason: she bought a vacaion home in upstate n.y. and the only way for her to get there was by car. Owning a car in n.y.c. is insane. A thousand dollars a month would not cover the cost of parking. On the othr hand I live in a remote area of the mojave desert (25 miles to the nearest town)so I have several cars.

Well, if nothing else, at least it keeps the number of accidents down. Women on the road are a fucking menace.

They'll be treated as equals when they demonstrate a fucking ability to act like equals. You know, by doing things like taking responsibility for their actions. Shit like that.

One of the ironic aspects about feminism is their desire for women to be treated as equals, except when that involves accountability for their actions - then all of a sudden they have no agency and are just victims of the evil mens.

I was making a joke, but I couldn't agree with you more about the part I highlighted. The example I usually use is pregnancy ... and then, ALL the shit hits the fan.

I hadn't heard that republicans "dismissed" women for the draft. I am old enough to remember when Carter expanded the role of females in the military and speculation went out about combat for women. The first voice of dissent was from the NAG hags.

As far as Cruz goes, I probably wasn't going to vote for him, anyway (although anyone was a better choice in my mind than the she-cunt), but women in the military is a touchy one for me.

I believe in equality. I also believe a very small portion of females can perform, physically, at the same level that a large portion of men can. (Edit) However, believing in equality as I do, men have been fighting and dying to protect this country for centuries and equal rights means equal obligations. I think there are a bunch of people that just aren't suited to military service. I just don't think it's a gender thing and women shouldn't have a blanket exclusion from the draft, based upon what's between their legs. Sign 'em up!!! Welcome to equality, gals!(/Edit)

That aside, when the ambulance-chaser came out of the sewer under his nose with: "I will not send my precious daughters off to fight ...", I wanted to reach through the TV and feel the last breath leaving his body; as if his children are any more precious to him than mine are to me. Fuck that arrogant piece of shit.

Before my coffee infusion, I was speaking figuratively.
But here are a few links

Women in draft, religious exemptions dropped from final version of defense policy bill
The most controversial measures in a defense policy bill forcing women to register for the draft and allowing federal contractors to make religious-based hiring decisions have been dropped from the compromise version negotiated by lawmakers.

But lawmakers did approve plans to slash by half the National Security Council to no more than 200 staff positions – a backlash inspired by former defense secretaries’ complaints the NSC is too controlling of foreign policy and military decision-making.

Technically those are called taxi drivers.
Jesus you are phoquing stupid.

And is not the same. Only people who can afford cars drive cars. That's pretty much everywhere in the world.

In singapore only about a million permits to own a car are available and they are available by competitive auction. For the terminally stupid that means only the millionaires in that third world shithole called singapore can own a car.

Why would you even say "Don't go there?" Don't you know you cannot visit Saudi as a Tourist? You can only enter for work purposes only.

"In December 2013, Saudi Arabia announced its intention to begin issuing tourist visas for the first time in its history."
Then of course there are the 14 million religious tourist that go there every year.
