im reading a novel that contains the following quote which made me think of this thread:
(the context is, a sister and the house maid are conversing about a conversation between the brother, who is the local magistrate, and a woman who was found having left (abandoned) her baby in the household. the woman refused to name the father nor did she say how the pregnancy came about and the magistrate did not press the issue.)
