Lara Smith, national spokesperson for the Liberal Gun Club, says her organisation has seen a "huge" rise in enquiries since November's election and a 10% increase in paid members.

Some of the new members are reluctant first-time gun owners, says Smith, concerned that isolated acts of aggression against minorities could escalate into something more violent and that a Trump administration will dismantle key constitutional rights, leading to a "more fascist rule than the US has ever had".

"It just feels like we are living at the end of the world and everybody expects the apocalypse to come sooner rather than later," says Clara, the nursing student.

"So learning how to shoot a gun doesn't seem like a bad idea. Certainly more useful than learning how to make PowerPoint slides, or whatever."

Welcome to them all.

I though that a gun in the home (even if you knew about them and didn't consider them to be evil) meant they would rise up in the middle of the night and kill you.
I though that any resistance to any government action was doomed to failure from the outset.
I thought that any conflict with any assailant was doomed to failure because the assailant had all the advantages.
I thought that owning a gun meant you were a paranoid coward.
Nice to see that the left has seen the light.
To bad this means that untrained people who have fostered unrealistic notions about the legal use of firearms will be running around with guns. Their friends , who will be as gun ignorant as they are and those people they have spend a couple of decades ridiculing won't want to deal with them, and since they want those guns to shoot us gun nuts.

Nnanji -> RE: US Liberals are buying guns (12/24/2016 10:43:25 AM)

I'm assuming they're not buying the guns to hunt so they have finally figured out what the Second Amendment really means. It's a step and as I said, welcome all.

WickedsDesire -> RE: US Liberals are buying guns (12/24/2016 10:46:30 AM)

"Gun ownership has traditionally been associated with the right wing in America but the election of Donald Trump has prompted some left-wingers to join gun clubs - and even start preparing for the collapse of society."

As i said i use either wiki, bbc, youtube as primary sources...I say with a pinch of salt...heh I humped someone from the BBC once...BBC wales that one in actuality.

Think i am all out of gun talk but today lovely stories are:

Arkansas man held for toddler's road rage shooting
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-38413899

wonder if he was liberal not that it actually matters

Maybe they just don't think anyone who disagrees with them should have guns.
Though I do have a question about this. Nobody has ever asked me about my politics when I bought a gun, how do they know these new buyers are Liberals, maybe they are just conservatives who live in liberal areas and are worried about the riots the next time they lose.

mnottertail -> RE: US Liberals are buying guns (12/24/2016 6:23:17 PM)

Liberals have always bought guns, nothing new here, nor remarkable in the US.

The end of the world! The apocalypse! Oh my! Maybe they should be buying Valium.

So they are a bunch of hypocrites. After all the talk, supporting gun grabbing politicians all the sudden they become gun owners. I wouldn't sell to them, I would say "Oh no, can't be going against your principles. Only republicans do that, remember ?".

You would think with all the bickering over gun threads on these boards that when there is a sign that liberals are warming up to the idea, the gun enthusiasts would be happy. But, damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Oh, and a handful of liberals freak out and go buy guns, so they are all hypocrites.

Two of us have expressed support for liberals coming around. How ever I still want to know how anyone knows it is liberals buying the guns. It isn't on the background check and I have never gotten a question about my political beliefs, salesmen don't pry into that sort of thing. I suspect that this is fake news.
If it is true my biggest problem would be if people who have spent their whole life in fear of guns, and thus intentionally ignorant of them running around carrying weapons.

Who says they've been afraid? Who says they've been ignorant?

Who says they've been afraid? Who says they've been ignorant?

First we need to have some way to know there is some truth in this story.
Libs constantly say that the only reason conservatives own guns is because they are cowards, and they constantly display an unreasoning fear of firearms ownership.
If you don't believe in firearms owner ship you couldn't reasonably own one to be familiar with them, lack of familiarity = ignorance.

US Liberals are buying guns

Good. I've been saying for about 30 years, now that we need to flush out the sewers, a little.

And still you have people who have never owned guns who get them out of fear of what they have always called hicks, who think that they are better than gun owners, live in fear of what those hicks are going to do, and have no experience with firearms, everything I said. Further they have someone making these claims but they just assumed that it was the truth and don't seem to have verified it, still no proof. This person who "rolled her eyes" at her father for owning a firearm is the only verifiable new lib gun owner.

If they are pro gun liberals it isn't a story, if they are previously anti-gun liberals it is either false news or everything I I said about them is accurate.

US liberals are buying guns? Is there ANYTHING that Trump can't do?

They are learning to use them... this means that at some point, they will not be inexperienced.

Some are afraid of Trump's potential assault on civil liberties, some are afraid the bigotry that Trump has stirred up and its potential to lead to conflict.

There is proof because of the background checks being run, as well as the fact that the LIBERAL GUN CLUB has seen a surge in membership applications.

I think that the whole 'anti-gun' thing was more about regulations than bans, but since there hasn't been a president like Trump in the history of the US, it was difficult to foresee guns ever becoming necessary. But it's probably also due to the climate that widespread gun ownership by the right has led to.

Charles6682 -> RE: US Liberals are buying guns (12/25/2016 12:40:51 AM)

I am a Moderate. I have always believed law abiding citizens should have a right to buy guns, to a degree. People should have the right to defend themselves. Some people like to go hunting. That said, there needs to be a healthy balance. Reasonable background checks, reasonable regulations. This is just common sense. I have family members who own guns for protection. They did it the legal way. Background checks, respecting the laws that are on the books. The second amendment is clear that people do have a right to bear arms. That doesn't mean people should be able to have access to military style guns. Basic common sense is all it is. It is a crazy world we live in today. I am thinking of maybe getting a gun too. I would do it the legal way. I would go through proper training. I wouldn't try to pretend I am some John Wayne in the old west. I would just use it for basic protection. I never was a gun fanatic. I don't need one to show off to people or scare people. Its like using a pocket knife. I don't pull that out to show how cool it is or anything like that.

Presuming that your notion of a "military style" gun would be something suitable for arming a militia, that's exactly what it means.
