PFH, I think the assumption was to be that he was IN the US military for those 8 years. It's like the Billy Joel song, Piano Man, with the lyric, "when I wore a younger man's clothes." Having spent 8 years in the US military just might give someone a better idea about the defense of the US than someone who has not spent time in the US military.
