ORIGINAL: heavyblinker I keep thinking of how many incredibly buff guys you will see if you go to a gay pride parade. I really can't imagine them not leaning more towards social equality. Yep, that too. ;) Really weird focus in this thread, though. It strikes me that the focus should be on conservative men because it's these who one would expect to want to be muscular - because, for them, we're constrained to live in fear. Per Thomas Hobbes, we live in a dog-eat-dog world in which nature is 'red in tooth and claw'. You have to fortify yourself against those hyenas wandering the streets, waiting to jump you in some dark alley. Then there's fear of change - especially revolutionary change - and the terror of the French Revolutionaries that Edmund Burke warned us about. The spectre of Madame Guillotine will always be there, giving the rich and powerful nightmares about Madame Guillotine. Just two centuries-old philosophers, albeit ones who are widely regarded as inspirers and founding fathers of modern conservatism. Conservatism's not like that now, is it? Apparently they conservatives remain more fearful than liberals, one study found: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-human-beast/201104/conservatives-big-fear-brain-study-finds : "Most societies are divided into a party that wants change (the more liberal party) and one that is afraid of change (the conservatives). The liberal party is generally more intellectual and the conservative party is more anti-intellectual. The conservative party is big on national defense and magnifies our perception of threat, whether of foreign aggressors, immigrants, terrorists, or invading ideologies like Communism. To a conservative, the world really is a frightening place." So one might expect conservatives, being hard-wired to be more fearful, to build up their muscles as they go through life. However, of course, muscular strength is of lesser importance in modern societies than other kinds of strength, especially the cerebral kind. In fact, until relatively recently, having muscular strength marked you out as inescapably one of the lower orders: the truly powerful man was no brute, but a gentleman. Pen is mightier than the sword - that kind of thing. Brawling in the streets was for vulgar louts.
