He seriously did! He actually went to North Korea and tried to steal a public poster!

You don't go into another country and steal their shit! And expect the punishment of that crime to be just a tap on the wrist like being in America.

I mean, its North Korea, you know if you get arrested there, the treatment is gonna be horrendous and inhumane, and you might lose your life. And OBVIOUSLY you will be tortured. Obviously North Korea dump him back as they don't want the expense of taking care of him being in Coma after kicking the shit out of him! I mean does anybody expect any less from North Korea? That's precisely what logically WILL HAPPEN in detention over there! It's North Korea. They do whatever they want, break all human rights. Who is gonna stop them? They treat their own citizens the SAME WAY! Except they can kill their own citizens and torture them whenever they want without international outrage.

There are all these European kids always coming into my country, like literally make a trip to fly all the way here just to do graffiti on public trains, like a dare devil stunt, to see if they can come here, vandalise and fly back to their country without getting caught. As vandalism in my country is caning.

And it's like, WTF Kids? Then they did get caught, and caned, like don't cry about it. We don't like Grafitti all over our city at all. We are Grafitti free and we would like to keep it that way!

Ya know, someone always need to be set an example of. Now no other American kid would be so brave as to think it's cool to go North Korea and bring something public back as a souvenir.

Anyway, it sounds like Tour agencies to North Korea are banning American Tourist if they can't behave and stay out of trouble! I mean, visiting North Korea means every tourist, you got a local officer tag to you 24/7 all day, monitoring your every action and movement, on stand by to arrest you the moment you make one misstep. You have zero freedom to visit where-ever you want. They control where you can and cannot go, and they tell you if you want to visit their country, you are limited to only going by their schedule and their escort. I seriously find this dude absolutely stupid.

I don't dispute this at all. When I said, "Don't vacation in N. Korea," I wasn't implying what he did was right.
I wasn't being flippant, well not completely. I don't know why the young man was in North Korea, but all things considered, going there especially at this point in time is not a great idea.

Stealing a banner sounds exactly like a college prank, that might get him a visit to the Dean's office in America. Young people do stupid things. Warnings go on one ear and out the other, especially if they've been raised to believe money and/or parents will get them out of trouble. I'm certain he never expected a 15 year prison sentence.

im actually a little dismayed by the quote from the university that bosco shared in the OP, distancing themselves from the woman and her position. they missed an opportunity to promote the exchange of ideas, however distasteful some ideas might be.


I'm not surprised, it is a business and it has a Board which isn't going to be happy with bad press and potential loss of income. Although people often say they will never send their kids to such and such, but outrage fueled by current events is too soon forgotten.

A nice brochure and the convenience of having their kids close, will likely wipe the outrage away like it never happened.

Actually you are the stupid one. My friends went to North Korea to have the bragging rights that they are been INSIDE North Korea and able to see what is happening First Hand. So that they know what they are talking about. That's why they went. They want to see for themselves if it's really that bad. And it is that bad. The people aren't bad, but it's the oppression, the lack of freedom to the extent that, everybody is constantly under surveillance, there is always someone filming you where-ever you go from a distance, and they do not encourage any form of individualism or having any form of privacy. Even the rooms you stay in are all bugged. They won't even allow you to go inside a toilet unaccompanied. That's what they went to see for themselves.

I mean where else in the world can you witness 1984 in real form.

Which makes me think this American kid is absolutely low IQ or something, I mean genuinely lower mental capacity with a mental disability. To be put in such an environment and for him to even consider he could get away with smuggling a poster home. It's like, what the hell was he thinking!
