FR quote:
The implementation of long-term, successful policy change cannot be short-circuited, it must be built on a solid foundation of thinking, analysis and research by smart, well-educated people. Listening to the common man rant about things he knows nothing about is a dead-end that leads to Trump and failure because there is no “there” there, just mindless rhetoric and frustration. ~Bruce Bartlett I held my nose and voted for Hillary because I suspected the Republicans would decimate our welfare safety net. Mr. Bartlett, in the OP linked article, does not seem to understand that elections are battles won by appealing to the disaffected or by showing people why they should be discontented. His arrogance and elitism are precisely why Hillary lost. He confuses governance with winning elections. Trump and the Republicans rode the wave of discontent created by globalism and the devaluing of labor. They may not truly believe that they can bring manufacturing jobs back to America and their plans to do so may be absurd but they were spot on in listening to the white working class who were struggling with two or three minimum pay jobs to maintain the lifestyle of the middle class they had gotten used to before the crash of '08. Hillary ignored the traditional base of the Democratic Party. She was a shite candidate. I fear the Dems will have to wait until after the GOP pummels our welfare safety before they have a chance to become the majority again. It appears the Senate is pushing the defunding of Medicaid to the out years so people in need will not feel the impact the next few election cycles. I hope I am wrong, but I think not.
