Hurricane Irma, could be a CAT 4 or CAT 5 Hurricane! 5.6 Million Floridians have been encouraged to evacuate. Many seem to be leaving at the last minute, and trying to get out has become a nightmare. This could be a seriously devastating hurricane. People have been talking about Hurricane Irma for over a week, just as people were talking about Hurricane Harvey WELL in advance. I am glad I no longer live in Florida! Thoughts on Hurricane Irma? Weather.com 5.4 MILLION encouraged to evacuate in Florida! CNN- Florida highways jammed as people attempt to evacuate Key West Official- Leave NOW or you are on your own.

I am starting to think that the strange weather & "record" disasters means climate change is indeed real and its gonna get worse.. I look at maps to see where the projected 2100 sea level is gonna be so that I stay far away from that..

I can't remember having 2 major hurricanes without weeks of each other of this magnitude. It is unbelievable, this is the biggest evacuation in American history. And the projected US landfall keeps pushing to the west with every update. Now, somewhere between Tampa & Fort Myers is likely. Still, it's more than a 90° turn needed to even hit Florida at all. The projected path hasn't been so difficult to predict since Katrina.

It has been 12 years since Katrina. Now 2 big ones in a couple of weeks. My prayers are with all of those people down there.

Let's see, you versus everything I am reading that states a major hurricane will likely effect a large portion of Florida? hummm, I will go with the weather experts. I hope you are not affected in Orlando.

Can you recall 2 hurricanes anywhere near this magnitude in your lifetime? If Hurricane Irma is as big as predicted, I don't think we have ever had 2 storms of this magnitude, this close together in recorded hurricane history.

Of course we all hope for the best but let's pray our government has planned for the worse. This is not a good time, but is there ever a good time, to talk about our government's, and through them our, responsibility to compensate homeowners for hurricane damage? I believe those that put themselves in harms way repeatedly by building in areas susceptible to hurricane damage should bear full responsibility for damage repair in the future. I can see giving aid one time but only if they rebuild according to a building code that assures survivability of the structures ... and in an approved area that affords some protection from the elements. I would also require private storm insurance that would cover the cost of the structure before issuing building permits. Each storm it seems becomes more and more expensive and I don't believe we should have to bear the cost of irresponsible home owners. Butch

Weather channel reports 17 dead, (rescuers still looking) hit Cuba already as a 5 since, downgraded to a 4. As for devastating Florida ? According to TWC, Irma will hit the Keys, go northward and proceed right up the middle of that state. Florida is 140-150 miles wide at its widest. Irma is 527 miles in diameter. Winds at the center will be 160 mph. That math is easy. This could rival Andrew. By tomorrow or Sunday, S. Geo, will be flooded.

Butch Furthermore, I understand that there are various financial incentives for coastline bldg. I wonder who thought up that gem ?

Well, since "everything you're reading" is being changed with every update, the same as everything I'm reading, it's safe to say that the prediction models aren't accurate. Georgia and the Carolinas are all under a state of emergency ordered by their governors, thanks to faulty projections, while Alabama and Mississippi should be bracing for the storm more. It helps to read about why the path is projected the way it is. The models are expecting Irma to turn because of an area of low pressure, and follow the path of least resistance. But they can't pinpoint exactly when that will happen with any accuracy at all. Hurricanes don't give two fucks about computer pathing models. Especially hurricanes that are larger than what the meteorologists are used to dealing with. Very few models projected Katrina to hit New Orleans until it was too late, again trusting an area of low pressure to turn the storm differently. I'm a bit north of Orlando, so really not expecting much from the storm here. I'm ready for it, or the next one, but that's because in Florida, it's always a matter of when we'll get hit, and never if.

Butch I was relieved to see that the eye of the storm and the major destructive winds are expected to move away from my home in Fort Lauderdale. It’s a big storm and I’m sure we will catch some high winds but nothing like the early reports that created such apprehension. I am hearing that this is the largest evacuation in the history of the United States, bumper-to-bumper at 25 mph as far as the eye could see. Returning home will be a bitch! But to Butch’s point, we are over 7 billion inhabitants of this planet, I wonder if there is any place on this planet where we can all go and be safe from nature’s forces. Let me know. LOL! I have lived here for over 40 years and during that time we have had maybe three major storms, so what are the odds that will drive us to pick up our families and abandon our homes and our jobs and move elsewhere where it is “safe” Earthquakes, tornadoes, dust storms, winter storms, hurricanes, volcanoes, floods and fires. Oh, where to go? Oh woe!

vincent I believe hurricane preparedness should be treated just like earthquake preparedness. Building codes must be strengthened for new construction to assure structures can withstand the wind and water... Structures destroyed must be rebuilt according to code... Areas that will not afford reasonable protection from the elements must be off limits to construction or reconstruction. Not just for hurricanes either... I think all new construction or reconstruction should be required to have a safe room that can withstand tornadoes and hurricanes. I do not believe we can go on bailing out people that refuse to protect themselves in a reasonable manner.... that includes you and me. I live in tornado alley and I paid to have the roof and building strapped to the foundation... it will also help if the New Madrid fault ruptures again. Butch

Update: Hit the Florida Keys 11 AM eastern. 125 mph winds, now a cat 3. Now heading west of Florida, hitting warm water, winds expected to hit 140 mph return to cat 4 and hit central western Florida. 30,000 without power already. The next target is now Tampa and north, expected winds will be: Sarasota...154 mph Tampa.....145 St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Springhill and Lakeland all 145+ mph. All cat 4 or 5, TWC says as the sun goes down, wind speed goes up. Irma traveling north and west has slowed from 13 mph to 9 mph. 60% chance of tornadoes. So the above is all Sunday.
