The island is still in desperate need of power, water, medical care, and food. Was Trump too slow in responding to the need of Americans trapped on a swamped island? The second storm to hit Puerto Rico was a Cat 4 that came ashore eight days ago. Only today did he lift the ban that allowed only American ships to dock in the island's ports.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump lifted restrictions on foreign shipping on Thursday to help get fuel and supplies to Puerto Rico as the U.S. territory reels from the devastation of Hurricane Maria, the White House said.

Trump, at the request of Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rossello, “has authorized the Jones Act be waived for Puerto Rico. It will go into effect immediately,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a Twitter post.

The Jones Act limits shipping between U.S. ports to U.S. owned-and-operated vessels.

Puerto Rico’s government had sought a waiver of the law to ensure as many supplies as possible, including badly needed fuel, reach the island of 3.4 million people quickly.

Rossello retweeted Sanders’ announcement with a “Thank you @POTUS” - referring to Trump’s official Twitter handle.

The decision comes the morning after Trump said that he was hesitating granting the waiver because “a lot of people who work in the shipping industry that don’t want the Jones Act lifted.”

Of course, the President was very busy and distracted by the behavior of NFL football players, [8|]

Why do you suddenly care now? You are part of the problem as this topic has already been mentioned on here to a stony silence. Trump fired out 5 tweets at the weekend on Puerto Rico and yet he, with the backing of his Russian bot farms, fired out 20 tweets regarding the NFL.
There is poverty in humanity. You fucking disgust me and I deem everyone else less.

As I am dealing with Idiots – currently (today) 3% of the island has power and less than 50% has access to water.

Top White House official lashes out at media coverage of Trump's Puerto Rico response

quote:

White House Homeland Security adviser Tom Bossert on Thursday defended the Trump administration's response to the devastation that Hurricane Maria has wrought on Puerto Rico, blaming media coverage for skewing perception.

Speaking with reporters outside the White House, Bossert said the media was distorting the federal government's actions to respond to the hurricane, which made landfall last week and became the most powerful storm to hit the island in almost 90 years.

"I understand the coverage, in some cases, is giving the appearance that we aren't moving fast enough," Bossert said.

He reiterated that getting resources to the island — where 3.4 million people have been left without power, and water and food are scarce — was difficult, saying there's "an understandable degree of devastation on the island."

"We are mobilizing and marshaling the resources of the United States of America in a way that is absolutely professional, fast, and adequate to meet the needs," Bossert said...

For his part, Trump has dismissed questions about whether he was too preoccupied to focus on hurricane relief.

"I've heard that before about was I preoccupied," Trump said. "Not at all. Not at all. I have plenty of time on my hands. All I do is work. And to be honest with you, that's an important function of working. It's called respect for our country."

of course that's not nearly as much fun as bashing the president is it?

You rise up in righteous indignation to accuse me of being part of the problem, why? because this is the first thread I posted on the topic? I looked at your history of posts and not once in your 28 did you mention Puerto Rico. So, I don't see any blue ribbons hanging from your tiny dick. No prizes for you, whoever you are socking for. The storm was predicted days in advance. The Trump team did nothing to prepare for the foreseeable disaster. No army engineers on site. No FEMA on site. No Masterobsidiaan on site. Where were you, dip shit? If you are such a superior human hero, why didn't you position yourself in advance?

Pretty feeble defense by the WH. No advance preparations. It's not like the storm sneaked up on us. Such bullshit.

Jees, anything to make a "He's Racist" statement. The problem was that the supplies sitting on docks on the island couldn't be distributed because of the devastation to infrastructure. Now that that aspect is being worked on, and distribution is beginning to occur, is an appropriate time to wave the act. Why don't you just stop looking for racism and try to understand events in the real world.

Made2Obey -> RE: Trump's Response to Devastation in Puerto Rico: Wait, What?! (9/28/2017 4:58:05 PM)

Well for one thing he's not your president and PR is not in your country, so you really don't have a platform from which to criticize.

Also, don't be stupid. The remnants of Maria have been occupying the shipping lanes from the East Coast ports to PR, so not much could be rushed over. All the airports were knocked out, and so were the shipping docks in PR. You can't bring in a damn thing until those facilities are operating. Also there are over 10,000 troops on the ground doing aid relief already, and there will be more as facilities allow. PR is too far from the mainland for helicopters carrying a load. Things are being done as fast as facilities and weather allow. Clearly you have never been involved in something like this and have no idea what it takes to move massive amounts of supplies. Or do you believe that we should have simply teleported everything needed over there?

Besides, when you live in a hurricane zone there is an aspect of personal responsibility to either be prepared to survive at least a couple of weeks without help, or to evacuate when there is adequate warning as was the case here. Not saying those people don't need help, but they should have seen that they could provide for themselves for at least half a month. That's about how long it takes to get a real relief effort going.

If you are so convinced those people need help then why aren't you down there helping?
Don't criticize if you aren't willing to back up your words with personal actions.

canada got a ship to dominica, couldnt offer assistance to PR, because of the act...
LOL How do you know I dont have family in PR?
You dont get to tell me what platform I have or havent, not ever:) well you do, but it wont stop me having an opinion
suffer sugar shorts.
I have to go down to an island that no one in civvies can get to, to have an opinion?
Fuck you are a joke

I think you're wrong. Hag Lucy has been involved in stuff like this before. She's sat on her ass and criticized people all of her unhappy, spiteful life. To each, that which they are capable of contributing.

You don't.
You have no more dog in this hunt than as if I were to bitch about Trudeau.

Yeah, it's always easy to sit on your butt and complain about others. It's hard work to actually help. We know you'll never do that. It would cut into your bitching time.

jlf1961 -> RE: Trump's Response to Devastation in Puerto Rico: Wait, What?! (9/28/2017 5:18:05 PM)

Lets talk about President Trump's response:

1) He just dispatched the US Navy Hospital ship Mercy last night, when other organizations were getting aid to the island the day after the storm.
2) Units in the US Military who's job is to set up and operate water treatment facilities are still sitting in their various bases waiting for orders.
3) The airports are still operating on Visual Flight Operations with no radar and using portable radios, while the US Air Force has no less than 8 active duty squadrons and 9 reserve squadrons with one job, go in, set up flight control and radar operations so high volumes of air traffic can be handled, in a fashion other than what was going on in the 40's.
Those units have not been mobilized.

If the president would do so, every airport on Puerto Rico could be handling C130s round the clock and the international Airport in San Juan would be able to handle the heavy cargo jets, which would mean that it would be easy to mobilize engineering battalions, seabees and other military personnel to get the infrastructure back and operating ASAP.

For him to 'applaud' the current limited relief effort while at the same time speaking of the debt the island has to wall street is bullshit.

And the reason the water and power infrastructure on Puerto Rico sucks and is antiquated is simple, US territories are not entitled to or qualifies for federal assistance to bring those vital systems up to modern standards, because they are not states.

So, we have a bunch of Americans paying taxes, paying higher prices for necessities, and they get shit in return.

Yet every time someone puts up a bill that would grant Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands for state hood it is shot down before it even gets out of committee.

Yup, whether anyone wants to admit it or not, the Americans living in the territories get all the burdens of being US citizens as in taxes etc and zero benefits, hell their reps in congress cannot vote or introduce legislation.

So, when some fringe group gets tired of the bullshit and since no one seems to be listening, does something like set off a bomb in congress, they are terrorists and someone uses them as another reason they should not be given statehood.

Its a win win situation, for someone.
