Rumors and speculation all over the place about just who this Devin Patrick Kelley was, and his motivation.

But the gun he used was an AR-15.

"Kelley is a former U.S. Air Force member who served from 2010 to 2014. He was dishonorably discharged and court martialed in May 2014, CBS News has learned."

Which means he obtained the gun illegally.

i just heard governor abbott confirm that texas law enforcement had indeed denied the shooter after a recent firearm application.

Oh well, nothing you can do then.

The federal government's firearm transaction record, which buyers must legally fill out, asks about felony convictions. Kelley bought a Ruger AR-556 rifle, used in the attack on the church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, in April of last year from an Academy Sports & Outdoors store in San Antonio, a law-enforcement official told CNN.
The purchase of the gun took place two years after Kelley had been court-martialed, imprisoned, and discharged from the military.

Here is what we know about the shooter:

1) Dishonorably discharged from the Air Force.
court-martialed in 2012 and sentenced to a year in military prison for assaulting his spouse and child
2) Had been denied on a gun purchase back ground check

Here is what we know about the targeted church:
His in-laws had attended the church at some point

Here is what we know about who ever sold him the gun:
They are criminally responsible at both the state and federal level, at least on the charges of selling a firearm to a prohibited person.

Personally, I would like to see them charged as an accessory to the murders as well, but I doubt that will happen, it would be nice because Texas has one of the accessory laws that would make the person who sold the gun to this man to be possibly charged with the same crimes as if he were at the scene and took an active part in the shooting.

Is that one often exercised to prosecute the sellers as an accessory? If there's one way to ensure that gun vendors actually do the required background checks, it'd be that. Very nice piece of legislation indeed.

Same tired arguments and the killing goes on. You are as much to blame as the insane killers themselves.

Another militant atheist, just like these guys:

Get back to us when you really care about mass shootings and not just taking away the people's means of defending themselves

IMO, if we could figure out why some people decide to kill other people, we'd be so much further ahead than blaming the tool used.

This is hard question, and does deserve to be answered. The harder question is why some people are willing to kill people they don't even know...
I actually can get someone killing someone in some domestic dispute, or even some stupid gang turf war, but really to walk into a church and shoot at basically everyone, or shoot at random people at concert like what happened n Vegas...
I don't get people killing random people. I don't think this can or should be accepted.

I can't get anyone wanting to kill someone else, unless it's self-defense. If it's "that guy" or me, I'm going to do whatever I can to make sure it isn't me, even if that requires taking "that guy's" life.

It seems like it's accepted by some on here, as long as a gun isn't used. That's the only type of killing that's not okay and gets them all worked up.

Well, part of the reason is probably because he loved guns a little too much.

He "loved guns a little too much," so he decided to shoot people? Wow. That's a completely fucking stupid comment.

We have learned the shooter in the Texas church massacre is a 26-year-old white male. So far we don't see many of the country's top politicians condemning him, instead most just seem to be sending thoughts and prayers. Here is some reaction from Twitter:

President Donald Trump: "May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan."

Senator Ted Cruz: "Keeping all harmed in Sutherland Springs in our prayers and grateful for our brave first responders on the scene."

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan: "Reports out of Texas are devastating. The people of Sutherland Springs need our prayers right now."

Vice President Mike Pence: "Karen & I send prayers to victims & their families in TX.We grieve w/ you & stand w/ resolve against evil. Thank you to the first responders"

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: "Elaine & I join w fellow Senators in sending condolences to the Sutherland Springs community, our prayers are w the victims & their families"

In contrast, just hours after the attack in NY last week Trump's first reaction in the form of a tweet was, "In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!" And "We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!?"

I think the psychology behind that is not to give any attention or focus to the one who did it t. They are not worthy of any kind of 'fame'.

I found a report that said he owned a semi-automatic, but nothing that said it was an AR.

The Guardian reports that the weapon was "a Ruger assault rifle" here, and as "an AR-15 semiautomatic weapon" here. For all I know it could be both a Ruger and an AR-15. I'm sure one of our resident gun nuts will be able to clarify this detail.

So sad to have to offer my thoughts and sympathy after another horrible incident like this. I've really run out of words to express my sorrow. When is somebody going to do something to bring these massacres to an end? How many innocent lives are going to be brought to a needless violent death before action is taken to ensure no more repeats?

Ruger makes a At-15 clone.
As you have been told many times it is not an assault rifle.
It does not have full auto capability.
The Ruger AR-15 style carbine is produced specifically for police use.
It is set up with the options most used by police and often not all available
on one firearm. Further it is more expensive than most other AR-15 firearms

I don't know about the timing of the details, but a note was found near the truck claiming the attack was done in support of ISIS, or something to that effect. Depending on when that was let out and the Trump tweet, that could have tipped Trump off.

And - I know this is a looooong shot, considering who we're talking about - Trump was waiting for more details of the shooter before Twittering about it?

The reason for the confusion in the report is that the writer doesn't know
the difference between a semi-automatic rifle and an assault weapon.

Militant fucking Atheist!

I swear right! The Atheist American organization is embarrassing the hell out of Atheist of the world! First they start this war against Christmas and wanted Christians to remove any Nativity display in public spaces.

Now they are killing Christians!

I don't know what is in the US that is making Atheists people banding together and hating on Christians so much. I feel like alot of these Atheists were Ex-Christians angry with the Christian God.

PS: And I am an Atheist saying this! Condemning my own! My choice in Atheism came from a simple experiment that I realise I still can get what I want, whether I pray or don't pray for it. Which makes me realise that my life is in my own control and no higher being is gonna make a difference in it.

But I would not be friends with American Atheists that is part of that Atheist organization attacking Christians. As that's just bullshit and vindictive bullshit. I swear only ex-christian Atheist are on some angry vengeance.

No, Bama. Not the same punishment. It's just that they're as morally reprehensible as the person who did the shooting. They are deserving only of derision and contempt by the "normal people"; the self-appointed "Guardians of Morality".

This time around, I think they should. We're not talking about a mass shooting where we don't know why the person did it and we're not dealing with an individual who legally owned the firearm. We're talking about an ex-military individual with a DV record and we need to recognize how dangerous those individuals are.

And on top of your truly sad physical deformity, you're a completely fucking stupid person.

He posted a picture of his gun on facebook, calling it a 'bad bitch'... he was practically sexualizing the thing.

He was attracted to the gun because of its destructive potential, because of how its potential to cause death made him feel powerful.
The whole point of owning a gun is to kill or otherwise disempower other living things, for whatever reason.

I'm sorry if this is too difficult for you to understand.
