Speaking from a non believers view ,in Christianity Satan represents the other half of the coin. How can you know good without knowing evil?

If God is omnipotent then he allows Satan free will to tempt mankind; isn't Satan only doing God's will in the end?

No!  Lucifer is a much cooler name.

Yep he hates it when folks shorten it to LUCY!

Thanks for the laugh guys. This morning has started out so badly Im ready to kill people. But now, I can refrain. So glad I need not tell the police, the devil made me do it.

LaTigresse -> RE: SATAN!! (8/3/2006 6:47:42 AM)

I don't believe in god or satan as two distant seperate beings. In my opinion we put too much distance between ourselves and both energies that are all a part of a larger whole. In essense absolving ourselves from our responsibilities, we are lazy. So, in that sense we are all getting a bum deal.

Mercnbeth -> RE: SATAN!! (8/3/2006 7:04:04 AM)

From a young age a line attributed to Satan, written by Dante has inspired me; "It is better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven!" The words still resonate with me today and was a succinct focusing summary of my goal of always being in position to control my own destiny. In business it dovetails into my believe that unless/until you work for yourself, you are doomed to being underpaid.

Not ashamed to note that my first reading of Dante's Inferno was inspired by this line heard first on an episode of the original Star Trek. (Bonus points if you know which character stated the line and what episode.)[8|]

It certainly looks that way.  I think Judas was also doing God's will.
Gotta have some bad people in order to make the good people look super good.

(Geek mode: enabled)
Not 100% sure, its been a long time since I watched it... but in my head I always hear that line spoken in Ricardo Montalban (Sp?)'s voice, which would make it likely to have been 'space seed' and the character being Khan Noonian Singh.[8D]

Compatible geek-ness...

Correct episode, but incorrect character! Khan initiated the dialog, but did not give the line. While being 'beamed' into exile, Khan is asked if he can handle the inhospitable rugged environment of the planet. Of course we all know from our reading that the planet became even more inhospitable later and was the inspiration for the movie "Star Trek II - Wrath of Khan". Khan replies; "Do you recall your Milton, Captain?" Kirk nods knowingly while Khan and his wife, former Enterprise Lt. Marla McGivers, are beamed out of the scene. Scotty says; "It's sorry for a good Scotsman to admit it, but I'm not up on my Milton. What does he mean?" (Sorry that was a paraphrase) Kirk replies with the Milton quote.

The correct answer is non other than the first and BEST Enterprise Captain - James Tiberius Kirk.

RavenMuse -> RE: SATAN!! (8/3/2006 7:35:44 AM)

Khan should have said it (Which is why I seem to have his voice stuck in my head for the quote)... now I'm sure many geeky subs would agree he would be one HELL of a Dom LOL

Got to disagree with you over Kirk though... SECOND best. Picard won me over by about half way through third season of TNG

Oh and he wasn't the first Captain. That would be Pike from the pilot episode the menagerie

Debatable. If you are talking about 1st series Captains, Pike is correct if you add the pilot episode ... if you are talking about 1st Enterprise Captains, that goes to Archer although an argument could also be made for Benedict Arnold with the capture of the George in 1775, rechristened.. Enterprise. ::chuckles::

Raven -
You, of course are correct sir! Unless you go back even further to Jonathan Archer, son of Henry Archer, young associate of warp drive inventor Zefram Cochrane. Jonathan Archer was captain of the first Warp 5 capable starship, the Enterprise. Launched 2151.

GREAT thread hijack!

Ah now I don't follow this new series, too much aimed at titillating 13 year old American boys rather than on BEING 'Trek'. But Pike was first as in first to hit our screens as a Star Trek captain (Its a bit dated but still a great episode). Got OS, TNG and DS9 on DVD haven't bothered with Voy and certainly won't be getting enterprise.

Just from one fictional character to another, but I'm sure it will revert to type before long, not so much a hijack, just a detour[:)]

Have you ever noticed that they both wear red, they both break into people's houses, they both advocate unpaid sweatshop labor, they both try to fulfill immediate gratification, the laws of physics do not seem to apply to either one and no one ever has seen Santa and Satan at the same place at the same time?  Coincidence?  I think not.

Tamerofwild1s -> RE: SATAN!! (8/3/2006 12:49:59 PM)

So here is something different....

In the grand scheme of things.. who thinks Satan is getting a real bum deal?

If you mean Satan in the strictest, Lucifer the Light-Bearer, God's favorite and later fallen angel, Roman Catholic sense, then, yeah, I think he got the short end of the stick.  I mean, he's an angel, so he's not born with free will.  (Yes, Catholics believe that.  I just checked the catechism.  Yes, I have a copy of the catechism.)  Humans and God are the only ones with free will, which is why the bible says we were made in His likeness and image.  So Lucifer didn't get to choose to have a fight with God.  God decided that for him.  God decides, well, someone has to do it and sends Lucifer and other angels to challenge Him and ultimately lose.  And over what?  Because God loved his new creation, the Humans, better than his original creation, the Angels, and gave them free will.  For this crime of fighting God's fickle heart, though they had no choice, they are eternally damned to the worst place in existence for all of eternity.  Not only that, but Lucifer must tempt others to join him.  Since he was ultimately a good, but confused angel with no choice, he would not enjoy doing that very much at all.  He has to endure a reputation as the most hideously evil being to ever exist.  And he didn't have a choice about a bit of it.  The only thing that separated St. Michael, the Archangel, and Lucifer, the original damned, is the whim of the Catholic God.  That sucks, and I pity the poor guy.

Keep in mind that evil is perceived.  After all, it wasn't Satan who killed Job's kids and gave him boils.  It was God that did that.

Edited to add:

"Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven..." blah, blah, blah, I highly doubt it.
~Milton

everyones scapgoat the boogyman hideing under your bed trying to steal, your soul and make you do bad things .

puella -> RE: SATAN!! (8/3/2006 4:00:35 PM)

My specific point, knees2you, was Satan as portrayed in the bible...

It was this point that made me really give up on the faith I grew up in.  It is in the "Lucifer" problem that you can see things which have been played out in other areas in the bible... that the creator of all things is flawed  with a bad temper he can not control, an ego problem and passive aggressive behavior.
