Speaking from a non believers view ,in Christianity Satan represents the other half of the coin. How can you know good without knowing evil? If God is omnipotent then he allows Satan free will to tempt mankind; isn't Satan only doing God's will in the end?

I don't believe in god or satan as two distant seperate beings. In my opinion we put too much distance between ourselves and both energies that are all a part of a larger whole. In essense absolving ourselves from our responsibilities, we are lazy. So, in that sense we are all getting a bum deal.

From a young age a line attributed to Satan, written by Dante has inspired me; "It is better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven!" The words still resonate with me today and was a succinct focusing summary of my goal of always being in position to control my own destiny. In business it dovetails into my believe that unless/until you work for yourself, you are doomed to being underpaid. Not ashamed to note that my first reading of Dante's Inferno was inspired by this line heard first on an episode of the original Star Trek. (Bonus points if you know which character stated the line and what episode.)[8\|]

Correct episode, but incorrect character! Khan initiated the dialog, but did not give the line. While being 'beamed' into exile, Khan is asked if he can handle the inhospitable rugged environment of the planet. Of course we all know from our reading that the planet became even more inhospitable later and was the inspiration for the movie "Star Trek II - Wrath of Khan". Khan replies; "Do you recall your Milton, Captain?" Kirk nods knowingly while Khan and his wife, former Enterprise Lt. Marla McGivers, are beamed out of the scene. Khan should have said it (Which is why I seem to have his voice stuck in my head for the quote)... now I'm sure many geeky subs would agree he would be one HELL of a Dom LOL Got to disagree with you over Kirk though... SECOND best. Picard won me over by about half way through third season of TNG Oh and he wasn't the first Captain. That would be Pike from the pilot episode the menagerie

If you are talking about 1st series Captains, Pike is correct if you add the pilot episode ... if you are talking about 1st Enterprise Captains, that goes to Archer although an argument could also be made for Benedict Arnold with the capture of the George in 1775, rechristened.. not sure this helps but the other night I was watching a show that said that Satanic or was it satan simply translated by hebrew as opposer .. so someone who opposes would be Satan ?? hmmm something to ponder now ... Satan gets a bum rap ...... well . lets see . angel of God gets a bug in his ass the the almighty might not be doing something right . all mighty says you don't like my way take this . drop him in a fiery pit .... you rule here then ... sounds like modern day employment to me . hmmmm or a politicians life

The only thing that separated St. Michael, the Archangel, and Lucifer, the original damned, is the whim of the Catholic God. That sucks, and I pity the poor guy. Keep in mind that evil is perceived. After all, it wasn't Satan who killed Job's kids and gave him boils. It was God that did that. Satan: Okay people say that the Christians Created him. When I was a kid growing up I never new what Evil was untill I was an adult. After 911 I realy began to see Evil for what it was! Yes my Wife and I are Christians, and We've been very Blessed. But we know if there is good in this world and there is! Then thier is Evil! Call it Evil Karma. Call it Evil Krishnar. My specific point, knees2you, was Satan as portrayed in the bible... It was this point that made me really give up on the faith I grew up in. It is in the "Lucifer" problem that you can see things which have been played out in other areas in the bible... that the creator of all things is flawed with a bad temper he can not control, an ego problem and passive aggressive behavior.
