2. The biggest mistake that people normally make when thinking about another country where they haven't really visited and talked extensively with many of it's people is considering it to be a monolithic entity, composed of completely homogenous citizens, clones.  From my experience, there is enormous variety in the outlooks, attitudes and practices within the US, and within Britain (again, as in any country I have visited, period).

This is a good point because if you think about the mixture of people you get in either country (black, white, asian, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, left wing, right wing etc. etc.) the absurdity of applying national characteristics to all those different groups speaks for itself.

About the only thing all Brits agree on is that the next time Hugh Grant leaves the country, we lock the door behind him and pretend he's French.

Note even completely sure what that means, but I got a big kick out of it! *LOL*

D4US,

Yes, it is difficult to make generalisations about a country of 350 million people. However, for the purposes of this discussion can we not just pretend they're all the same?

Regards

If there's one thing I envy about Americans it's their refusal to take second best in any service.  I once listened to a woman arguing with her bank over a small charge they made for her going into the red and sweet Jesus, you'd think they'd shot her pet dog or something.  But man, did she argue her case until they erased that bank charge.  I almost applauded her as she strutted out.

LOL........ Yes , we tend not to like *making a scene*. It's just *not the done thing*.

One thing I'm fond of is the english way of understating. Sometimes you just HAVE to be english to know that being *rather upset* means *absolutely fucking LIVID*.....something that is *a little annoying* can be some awful life-changing incident...something that was a *bit rough*....can mean *I barely survived*.........lol
