Intriguing idea twice, but I agree with stef (relax stef, it probably won't happen again[;)]), smoking and obesity may well be equally dangerous, but smoking has the proven ability to harm those who do not smoke, which overeating doesn't really. I am a smoker, and I don't really think I have a right to smoke where it will affect others...I wish I did, but I don't.

One important factor I think deserves mention.... While parents are responsible to see that their kids are as healthy as possible; keep in mind that kids spend several hours a day in school, where educators focus on academically preparing kids for the FCats in a rather sedentary manner. Time available for physical education activities has been decreased due to academic concern, or even due to the harmful effects of exposing kids to harmful U.V. rays for too long. Half (or more) of a young child's waking hours are spent away from home, where others have control over a child's well-being. Additionally, a child can eat the same healthy, balanced meal that their peer may eat... but may spend more time in front of the TV. Food and restaurants are not the only cause of obesity. Smoking in front of kids requires nothing but walking outside.

Well not as many people smoke as over eat, that is an absolute fact. There are so many chemicals in the food we eat and I think that is the biggest problem. I know my Daddy eats Splenda[:'(] thinking it will help him lose 5 pounds (he looks great the way he is). I try to get organic milk, eggs, cereal, fruit and veggies because of this. I think this junk in our food is addictive like ciggies are and I crave junk food as much as I ever craved ciggies. There are 1000s of addititives in food that the FDA does not require be labelled on our food, who the hell knows what they do to us. It is like the additives in cigarettes. I believe people should eat whatever they like, but I believe in informed consent, and how can I give my consent to eat something if I do not know what is in it? I think that the government has been very lenient with food producers in labelling requirements and we ha ve to be more vocal in our dissent of eating chemical goo.. but then again I am a hippie, liberal, tree hugging, environmentalist from the Land of the Fruits and Nuts... damn proud of it too!

I used to move out of the way but that way morons dont learn to pay attention. My car is an ugly mangled 4X4 with LOTS of steel and loaded down so it weights a good amount.

Obesity is now the number one killer? Wasn't it always? Easy to cure obesity, you only need two things. A fast pick-up truck and a long rope.

I can see it now; vending machines with a butt imprint in them. One has to stick their butt in, and the machine does some calculations to tell if you're suitable for buying from the machine.

When a person quits smoking or drinking or drugs they generally won't die. The withdrawl systoms make them wiosh they would but genreally they get throught it nad everything is ok [that's figuratively ok] Food is the one substance that if you overindulge it can eventually kill you. Maybe, maybe not. But if you quit eating you will die much faster and the results are unavoidable. I'm 6 ft tall and weighed 145 in high school, 165 when I graduated and 20 years later[at 38] I was 200. At 43 I was 280, at 53; 350. I've been fighting my weight for 20 yrs and in that time only one thing helped me get back down to 230. A combination of drugs phentermine and fenfluromine commonly called Phen-Fen. Save your breath I've heard it all. For ME phen-fen worked. I had none of the harmful side-effects. I did have a monster thirst which was beneficial because I drink A LOT of water. Now I need to back up a little. Something happened to me in my late 30s. I developed osteo-arthritus in my knees. The Navy removed my left kneecap. During rehab I tore cartilege that went un diagnoseed and untreated fo ten years. When it was found out the only recourse was a total knee replacement. That stopped the falling and fluid on the knee[up to 70-100 ccs at a time]. During that time my appetite went screwy and would not turn off. I was continuously hungry. Phen-fen turned it off. It felt sooo good not to be hungry that I was only eating 800 cal. a day. When I realized why I wan't losing weighte I increased my intake to 1200 and the weight melted off to the tune of 100 lbs in 7 mo. When you walk just 1/4 of a mile in MY shoes then you can talk to me about weight loss. The govt is partially responsible for removing an effective protocol for weight. Phen-fen was developed for people who were AT LEAST 100 lbs overweight, required heart and liver monitoring. But when it "caught on" phen-fen was being prescribed to people that didn't meet the criteria and doctors weren't monitoring anything. So no wonder there were problems. The drug companies have come up with a lot of new drugs to help but none of them focus on appetie control. I remember one t-shirt that said "I'm gonna die with chocolate on my breath"
