I don't have any specific advice to offer you with regard to training your dog, but I do have a story to share that is rather interesting and might shed some light on your "retarded" dog. My parents adopted from the pound a young shepherd mixed breed pup. We have always had dogs and my dad prides himself on being an excellent dog trainer. But this dog just didn't "get it" ever. She was a mess and she did things no dog ever dared do (like get up on the counters and steal food that was being prepared). She tore things up, she ran from my parents when they tried to discipline her. She messed in the house. She tore the screening out of the screen doors so she could get outside (that was the first time, the second time it was so she could get inside). She was a gorgeous dog and had a very sweet tempermant and they really wanted things to work out, but after six months of making no progress, they were ready to take her to obedience school. Well, before that happened, early one winter morning, my mother heard her on the back step barking frantically. She went out to investigate and found another young pup (a beagle/pit bull pup) that was hiding under the step, terrified, and who had been shot full of buckshot and was bleeding. My mother pulled the dog out from under the steps and the shepherd was very, very interested and acted concerned for the puppy. My parents took the dog to the vet who removed the buckshot and gave antibiotics and so forth. When they brought the puppy home, the shepherd instantly became maternal to the puppy, caring for her wounds, fussing over her as my parents tried to train the new puppy how to live in a house. The two dogs became instant best friends to each other (with the shepherd displaying a more dominant personality over the puppy). She matured over night and became almost a new dog. They have had very little problems with the shepherd since and the beagle/pit bull mix puppy has become another beloved member of their family. How is that for interesting?
