ORIGINAL: SlaveAkasha I will try to answer as best I can from my reasons and my understanding. It's not that cows die from milking, or hens die from laying eggs. Being vegan more has to do with the treatment of the animals in factory farms, which is where a majority of eggs and milk products orginate. The calves are usually kept for veal, and the cows are kept preg. as much as possible. The hens are made to lay eggs at a much higher rate than they would in the "wild", and that in turn damages their health and gives them a much shorter lifespan. I think everyone that is vegan has their own reasons for not eating meat, dairy, and egg products. I personally did a lot of reading about animal conditions in the factory farms, slaughter houses..etc...and besides the health benefits it gives me, those are my other reasons. To the best of my knowledge.. my Master is not kept from his children, kept in a cage not to move, kicked, skinned alive, etc... he works, then comes home to his loving slave, who very happily takes in this protein. That's just how I see it, and I am sure other vegans/vegetarians see it different. Kasha Thank you for your answer. I agree that the conditions in which some animals are kept are intolerable but I suppose I just have trouble thinking that veganism is the answer. It seems to me that the better thing to do is to buy eggs, cheese and other products from local farmers who will be more then happy to let you tour their farms. That not only takes money from the "bad" companies but gives it to the humane farmers. That is what I prefer to do by shopping at organic food marts and local co-ops whenever possible (curse the fact that ethical eating costs money....) and provides evidence that people care and are willing to pay for food that is gotten humanely. I know once I get out of college and can afford it, that is where all my food dollars will go. Plus you get tastier eggs from free-range chickens... [:)] You are welcome. I do agree that I would be more likely to eat eggs if I could go to a farm, see how they were raised, and purchase them. It's not so much the egg, as the conditions that bother me. Even the ones that say free-range in the store aren't kept the way people picture it. I do admit I like soy milk a lot better than regular, so I would drink it regardless. I understand that not everyone can see things the same way, that's why I never force the subject on them. Like with you, I will answer questions if asked the best I can, but I don't expect that to give someone a revelation that they should change everything. There is no ONE answer to things, there are different things that help, and people do it in different ways, one is not better or worse, just different. Kasha
