Status: offline 		It's not the eating goose liver that is the issue.  It's is the horrible, cruel practice of force feeding to enlarge the liver that is.  That is how you get fois gras, or however the hell it's spelled.

Status: offline 		Fois Gras is the seventeenth most delicious form of cruelty to animals, right after beating a dog to death to tenderize the living flesh.

But seriously, if you've ever tried well made fois gras, seared, you would want to die rather than stop tasting it.  Fois gras paté is not bad, but I would kill my own mother in law to get good, seared fois gras.

And those damn geese had it coming.

After seeing footage of the animals tortured to get that bit of liver I couldn't eat it regardless of how good it tastes. I don't see anything wrong with eating meat.  I just don't see why animals have to be treated so cruelly in the process.  Humanely raised and controlled killing...what's so bad about that?

You know, dog soup is popular in Korea, benji. 

And most people wouldn't need *that* much of a reason to take out their mother-in-law.

But seriously, I know it's cruel.  But I know that a lot of my other behaviours result in worse cruelty on other beings, be they human or animal.

So I say bring on the fois gras!  And you can have your chinese firecrackers.

Status: offline 		Any local council which makes any attempt to forcibly regulate what I can and can not eat faces my wrath and the better than even chance of a public uprising or at least the local members who supported the enforcement of such a total disregard of my rights to live my life without interfering with others being publically excecuted or their bodies left hanging from lamp posts as a warning..

Status: offline 		I don't eat meat... but if others choose to fine.  I just think it's awful when they don't allow the animal they are killing (eventually) for food to at least live in peace while it's alive.  Like the geese in this instance or the poor little calves they make veal from.... tied up tightly and not allowed to move (form muscle) from birth... that's just cruel.... and just so someone can say 'mmmm tender veal' instead of just eating the beef that was allowed to walk around the pasture and enjoy its grass in peace before it died so someone could consume it.   How sad.

I say ban the goose liver... animals have a right to not be treated cruelly while they are alive more than people have a right to enjoy a food delicacy we can live without.

It's not about what the government is telling us we can't  eat;  it's about the government telling us we can't be cruel to animals unnecessarily.  I would think the government wouldn't have to tell us not to torture animals who are living among us... but apparently we don't know any better.

It's one thing to kill an animal food, but to want it suffer for months at a time so it will taste better for one meal?   That's just plain cruel..

By the way, the poll allows no choice that I would agree with. 

Chicago shouldn't regulate what food can be eaten, but if the animal which is to become food is to be severely abused in its daily life, it's not a food regulation matter- it's an animal abuse matter.  As far as I know, animal abuse is already banned in most places.

Portland is on the verge of doing the same thing.... Several places that normally have fois gras on the menu have taken it off.

As someone who takes the spiders out of the house and puts them on the grass.... I wholeheartedly agree with you. Being a Pisan and having grown up with veal... it's tough, but I almost always pass on it now.

Animals shouldn't have to suffer for the purpose of entertainment. That's what happens in situations like this. People put their compassion and their consciences on "pause" in order to enjoy a little buzz.

But no, I don't think it is the business of any government city or otherwise, to dictate what people can eat.  They can bann the raising of  birds within the city, the killing of them, etc...  It is an ethical and moral issue, not a legal issue. Who ever came up with the idea of that law was an idiot that needs to get a life.

Status: offline 		Why not make it legal to just torture animals anywhere.... Just because animals are going to be eaten eventually, doesn't mean it's okay to make them suffer while they are alive. 

Everyone is so concerned with having the 'right' to do anything they please, that they have begun to stop thinking about anyone or anything but themselves.  The government doesn't allow us to kill other people.... It's "banned".  Why not fight for our right to kill others as we please.... how dare the government ban us from our freedom as a mighty human being?

Again, I would think the government wouldn't have to restrict us from killing other people, but they do.  If people decided  they wanted to eat people... I bet then it would be okay to tell people what they can't eat.  So, it's not a 'what you can eat' issue, it's an  'animal torture isn't okay' issue.

There are ways to make goose liver without torturing the animals for weeks before killing them... but it would cost the meat producers more money.  The right you are fighting for is for a  meat company to be allowed to torture animals in order to make more money from you, the consumer!

Status: offline 		I never said one word about the legality of the treatment of the animal........if Chicago, Illinois, or the US wishes to bann the CREATING of said food then spiffy diffy doo. What I said was that it is assinine for a government to waste taxpayer money over banning a food. If that is the case then they should bann all leather goods, all fur goods, all products made from ALL animal byproducts etc etc etc. Bann, eggs, chicken, Banquet turkey pot pies even....Why?? Have you seen how chickens are treated? I have, I am a farmer, I live in farm country USA, I worked for Country Lane Eggs. The conditions those chickens live in to produce those nice cheap eggs were and are no better than those geese being used for the pate'.
I am not pro cruelty to animals in anyway. I am just saying that it is hypocritical to make a law regarding one small part of it.

Is it not possible to have compassion for people and animals? Does it have to be one or the other? For me, it's all one thing. Justifying one horror by pointing to the continuation of another is, at the least, flawed thinking. In this example, it's a form of passive complicity in deliberate, gratuitous cruelty.
