Hi Susan, I had a similar situation when I was working as a tour guide over the summer at our tiny local church. It was an old building in a beautiful (secluded) location with some very old graves etc. and it attracted enough tourists that they got a government grant for 2 students to work there during the summer. We (me and another girl about a year older) had to keep the place tidy, explain the history of the place, and tend to the graveyard (cutting grass etc.) There was a work crew doing some paving or something on the road and I used to ride (on my bike) past their equipment early in the morning. There were usually no workers there yet. One morning as I rode past I noticed an old red truck and that seemed kind of odd to me. That day the girl I was working with decided to eat her lunch down on the beach and as soon as she left the building I locked the door behind her. I was just filled with a sense of dread but couldn't really explain why. I was suddenly terrified of being in there all alone. A few minutes later I heard a vehicle and when I looked out, there was that old red truck. It parked right behind the rec center (where I was and where no tourists ever parked) When I saw that I hid in the ladies room, locking the door behind me. This guy was definitely not a tourist! I watched as he walked right past the door and on down the path behind my friend. I was sick with fear but I just couldn't leave the building. Very soon after he came back up the hill and high-tailed it out of there in his truck. He was followed by my friend and several other young people who had (thankfully!) been on the beach. The older boys had recognized him as a local convicted rapist who had recently been paroled. They chased him off the beach. I have no idea how long he'd been watching us - two girls of 17 and 18 alone in a secluded place, but I do have an idea of what would have happened to my friend if those older boys hadn't been there and recognized him. The boys said he had come down the path right behind her and at first they were startled to see her with him, but she had no idea he was behind her! When I told my parents about it, it turns out that one of the girls he'd been convicted of raping was my own cousin, although I'd never been told of it before. I'm glad I listened to my gut that day. Soquili's Girl quote:
ORIGINAL: SusanofO Personally, usually - especially since reading that book, whenever I have a "bad feeling" about someone, especially if that person is bigger and stronger than I am, (or younger, or more helpless) if I see a situation where something about it doesn't just quite make sense to me, or seems "off", or gives me a "bad feeling in my gut" for some reason, even if I can't put my finger on exactly why - I pay attention to that impression. And it's turned out to be on target more often than not , and one person was actually arrested...
