We've already discussed how the US National Anthem had been translated into Spanish. Now, the Pledge of Alligance has not only been translated, but also forced for kids in school to say it once in English and then again in Spanish.

My son had to have spanish 1 and spanish 2 before he can gradutate.......iEso es estupido!!!!!

My son doesn't say the pledge in English. so who is going to force him to say it in Spanish...smiles. Seriously, are there not better things to do with one's time than to worry about what language people say things in? I mean really, I would hope people would perfect their first language rather than attack those who use another

In California you do not have to have a second language unless you want to go straight to university... college prep has a two year language requirement. He could probably take French instead of Spanish for a second language, or German if it is a really progressive school... In Europe their kids speak two or three languages.. I wish we were like that, their kids are just better educated than ours...sighs

I live in a bilingual country and for some time lived in a territory with 8 official languages. My kids are fluent in a number of them and I get by a some of them. I have no problems with people learning a new language, actually think it is great for children to have more than one. I just find it difficult as an adult to pick up new languages.

~shrug~ I never said the pledge in English. Doubt I'd say it in Spanish. When I have kids, don't plan on forcing it on them either.

I think there are two issues wrapped into this: the issue of speaking a second language and the issue of illegal immigration. In my opinion it would be good to separate the two. Learning Spanish (along with bits of German, Italian, Swahili, French, and American Sign Language) taught me that there are other cultures in the world, and opened my eyes to a wider range of views than just that of a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Merkin (American). Learning to be open about other cultures and ways of thinking primed me to be open to new ideas in other areas of my life. Like sexuality and BDSM. Learning foreign languages can be a very, very good thing. Illegal immigration is a completely separate issue that I will leave outside the scope of this post so that I don't highjack the discussion. :-) Humbly, pup75

I speak Spanish (my first tongue), English (I hope rather fluently), some French, some Italian (less than my French). People in the states should make an effort to learn English and it should be required as the only official, legal language. Period.

The Anthem wasn't just translated, the actual words were changed. As for the Pledge, it doesn't surprise me. Public schools are all about indoctrination nowadays anyway.

In the US.. we are composed of English speaking sates. I'm sure if each state had their own language;.. we'd learn their language, just out of respect. If I am going to Europe, I'd at least have a working knowledge of the language of the place I intend to visit.

Personally I believe in learning and speaking different languages. I grew up in Arizona on a cattle ranch where most of the help spoke spanish. I learned it from a young age and still try to stay as fluent as possible. I also learned german from my Grandfather as a child so I am fairly fluent with it. I took four years of latin in school and one year of ancient greek in school. When I aprenticed as a chef with a european chef I was told that I needed to learn french or I would not make it as an aprentice. Over the many years that I have been a professional chef I have used every one of these languages in one form or another including the latin and greek. Where I am a little upset is that they feel they have to translate the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance into another language for that particular group of people to say it in their language. I did not sing the Marsellaise in english when I was in France, I sang it in French. These people should at least learn how to say the Pledge of Allegiance in english as that is how it was originally written. They should learn to sing the National Anthem in English as well. I do not mind them having it translated to help them learn how to say it right in english. but they should not be allowed to only say it in spanish. nuff said.

I'm ready for Spanish. I know quite a bit and am teaching my daughter what I know.... but I would love to be fluent in many languages. It's a wonderful thing; brain function is increased with knowledge of additional languages, and how wonderful to be able to communicate with many more people world-wide. Americans who think it's toxic to be exposed to other languages are at a major disadvantage. Most countries teach English in schools, and it is more common to go to other civilized nations and find people speaking English as a second language, than it is to come to the US and find people speaking Spanish, French, Italian, etc, as a second language. The US has a lot of Spanish-speaking people, and I see no reason why there shouldn't be room for two languages. I don't see a problem if the national anthem or the pledge is translated into another language... who does it hurt? Heaven forbid we should all be more tolerant, more culturally diverse and more knowledgeable. In my opinion, Americans often seem so hung up on being "American" that they sometimes forget they are human beings also. I'd love to see the The National Anthem re-written. We are so proud of bombs and war.... what about peace, love, beauty, and unity? I would have to move to another country to sing a song like that.
