Kindred2Evil -> RE: How ready are you for Spanish? (8/31/2006 6:03:16 AM)

Of course learning to speak Navajo or Creek or Cherokee isn't an issue.  Our languages are pretty much dead except within the tribes.  Don't get me started on that one.
Being forced to speak in any language other than your native tongue isn't right and it shouldn't be an issue, but unfortunately it is.  Well, that ball swings both ways.  Children and adults who come here are forced to learn English to get through.
Now I know it wasn't like they were forced to move here, but then again, nobody that I know of has been made to move here in quite a loooooooooong time.  One should learn the native tongue of the country they live in if for no other reason than to just get by.
As for the Pledge being spoken in both languages, that should be an option, not an issue.  If they are going to speak it in English and Spanish, why not Italian or German?  How about Chinese or Japanese? Or Arapaho or Cheyenne?  How about Crow or Apache?  I'm sure in some schools those are native tongues for some students.
The point is if you're going to make them honor one other language, you should make them honor them all.  Shoot, you could make one or two days of school nothing but learning the pledge in various languages so no one is left out.

My son had to have spanish 1 and spanish 2 before he can gradutate.......iEso es estupido!!!!!

That is a state law. In California you do not have to have a second language unless you want to go straight to university... college prep has a two year language requirement. He could probably take French instead of Spanish for a second language, or German if it is a really progressive school... In Europe their kids speak two or three languages.. I wish we were like that, their kids are just better educated than ours...sighs

The dofference with Europe is it is composed of different COUNTRIES.  In the US.. we are composed of English speaking sates.  I'm sure if each state had their own language;.. we'd  learn their language, just out of respect.

If I am going to Europe,  I'd at least have a working knowledge of the language of the place I intend to visit.

Europe is a continent with separate countries just very recently trying to form a European Union... Mexico is our nearest neighbor and Spanish speaking.... thanks for making my point, we would be "respectful" to learn Spanish just like Italians  should learn to speak French or Spanish... because they are in close proximity... thanks for making my point for me..smiles

Did we forget English Speaking Canada?

Part of Canada is French and their citizens learn French. We have the territory of Puerto Rico, why shouldn't we speak Spanish too?

I spoke Spanish before I spoke English, or Hebrew for that matter.  But if you want to drag respect into this, anyone entering any country should learn the language of that country.  I wouldn't come to your house, fire up a cigar and kick off my shoes without asking permission first, and I'd expect you'd not do the same in mine.

You are right, we should all speak Cherokee... it was very dsirepsectful to come into their home and kill them all and force them to speak English

IF I were going to live in Mexico,,, I WOULD learn and speak their langauge and not expect everything to be in English for my sake.  No... I did NOT  "prove your point"...prove your own, if you can.

If someone comes into my house.. they adhere to my  rules and customs.  If I want theirs, I'll ask for them.

I mean Americans go to countries all over the world and converse in the local tongue (yeah right, if they do not speak English we just talk louder and slower like the locals are retarded, that is how most Americans act when they go to Mexico or any other place)

I absolutely agree that what happened to the Native Americans was not only disrespectful, but also abhorrent by todays standards. I can not honestly say that I would have the exact same feelings had I lived during that time, but I would like to think so.

This may be your experience. As it happened for me spanish was my first language. I had to learn english to go to school. when I went to Mexico some years later I re-learned the language. Yes, sometimes I stumbled over words and the ranch hands had a good laugh, Yes, some of them spoke english or enough that I could convey my thought and they would help me translate. But the rule was inside the main house I spoke english, outside the door I spoke spanish.

A sidenote that I find personally amusing; My daughter's father is Puerto Rican and she has his last name. I lived in California when she entered kindergarten. About a week before school started I recieved a letter from the school district, in english, asking if would require a english as a second language aide for my daughter.

Another side note. I specifically selected the school my youngest is in based on it's theme. It's an African American Village Schule. They don't have the big work up in December for Christmas. There is mention of Christmas,Chanukkah, and the way different countries observe the holidays, but the main focus is on Kwanzaa. It's clearly listed in the school guideline thingy. If I were going to take exception to this, as a logical adult, it would probably be the wrong school to place my student in.

To return to the original topic, because I'm really good in into sideline issues, being forced to learn another language is wrong.

juliaoceania -> RE: How ready are you for Spanish? (8/31/2006 12:52:32 PM)

I am part Cherokee and one of my ancestors walked the Trail of Tears, so it is not just some drivel coming out of my mouth. What I see in threads like these is xenophobia and hatred stemming from that. Call it "respect", I do not see Americans respecting much of anything except their "freedoms" and their "rights" no matter how many have to go without or have to be carpet bombed to get them.

I do not recite the pledge or sing the anthem in any language. I had to threaten the school with a lawsuit because they threatened to discipline my son twice for not pledging alligence to the flag. I find it odd that people would get "offended" because someone taught the so-called values they hold dear in both the pledge and the anthem in another language other than English, and that people would get upset that their child learned a few words of Spanish.. talk about out of control bigotry... spewing venom toward Mexicans by going off over a few words in a song or a pledge.

I learned to sing a lullaby in German through choir at my school... no one cared, no one said a word.. Americans these days only respect the ability to force their will upon the world by gunpoint or with carpet bombs, and they get bent that others may want a little pride in their history and culture by honoring their language of origin... really freaking sad that people would feel "disrespected" by this.. i wonder how many Iraqis are learning English these days?

I am so tired of the ugly American, particularly because I am one of them... and I am judged by their double standard they show  the world

We've already discussed how the US National Anthem had been translated into Spanish. Now, the Pledge of Alligance has not only been translated, but also forced for kids in school to say it once in English and then again in Spanish.

I have no problem with other languages being taught in schools, even making them mandatory.   I failed Spanish in HS because I spoke Spanglish and just couldn't make the transition.  I also speak Italian, German, Farsi, Amharic, and Tigree (from the various countries and people that I have worked with).

The problem that I have, and what I feel the thread has lost sight of, is the FORCED speaking of the Pledge of Aligence in Spanish.   I think that falls into the category of me, a whole bunch of well armed gorillas and some really major torture devices.

How about the FORCED speaking of the Pledge of Allegence in any language?
Some people who are forced to say it, are from a country with a different flag.  Why should kids be made into little patriots if they or their parents don't want them to be.   Being forced to utter any words seems hardly like freedom to me.

They shouldn't be forced either.    Just show respect for those that do

Yeah, well most of Canada speaks English, Far more border up there than with Mexico.   They speak a form of French in NOLA too.   I am not so sure that it is taught in school though much less mandatory.   Oh and if you want to speak Spanish fine,   I don't care.   But if it becomes mandatory then it is wrong.

That is all so true.  that is why when I was in Africa I had to learn 4 languages and in Germany another one.

I'm sure if we look back in history, and sometimes not that far, the majority of people on this forum can name a time when thier ancestors were subjected to slavery or mass genocide. You opt not to pledge allegiance, I opt not to be subjected to forced languages. Both of these are freedoms and rights that exist because someone paid for them in blood.

surly -> RE: How ready are you for Spanish? (8/31/2006 1:52:52 PM)

really?! that is nutty! when i was in elementary school we'd be punished for speaking any spanish at all! (and that was in the south, near the mexican border) amazing how things change...

SirKenin -> RE: How ready are you for Spanish? (8/31/2006 2:01:11 PM)

Oh well.  I had to take French... No biggy.  And think of it this way.  My wife is 100% bilingual. French and English, as she was born in Laval, Quebec.  She just got a job as a DLink tech support whichemacallit, making really good money.  The entire team is French.  They get paid more than the English speaking employees because they are bilingual so hey... I think that rocks... And it is REALLY funny when she starts giving Me tech support in French in the middle of the night while she is sleeping.. When I go "huh?" she then translates it into English.  I am amused.

Yes, my relatives paid for them in blood, my uncle has a purple heart for example.. thanks for pointing this out to me. Unlike some I am willing to shed my blood for what I believe in, I just wouldn't someone else's, unlike many many people who seem to have little trouble using our troops in the affairs of others. It is quote hypocritical, our freedoms at the expense of the world... how Big of us

There is more of that tolerance this board is so famous for.  If you do not like it you can always move to Russia or something.  Learning two languages is not a bad thing, it is a good thing.  You open yourself up to more job opportunities.  You learn a little bit of culture.  You get yourself some edumacation.  Without French class I would never have learned "tete de merde" (shithead) for example..  haha.

I have no problems with two official languages.  I just have a problem with being forced to have all the signs in the rest of Canada bilingual, but all the signs in Quebec strictly in French (that is what happens when you have politician's kissing Quebecs ass so they do not separate).  Not a problem in the end though.  I still understand what they are all saying.

OT:  It is really funny listening to My wife swear in French.  She explained some of it to Me, but I still do not understand most of it.  It is just funny as hell watching her go.

I'll grant that you may or may not have been following my postings. I do tend to get a bit long winded at times, ramble some,  and I admittedly sometimes zone out in the middle of others longish posts.
I never said learning two languages is a bad thing. I never said being multi-cultural was a bad thing. I never said educaton was a bad thing.  I never said expanding ones job opportunities was a bad thing. If anyone wants to do any of the afore mentioned. I'm all for it. For the record, I insist on it in my own home.
What I said was a forced language is a bad thing.
I'll break it down for you.
Schools that have a language requirement to graduate and offer spanish, french, japanese, and I dunno martian is a good thing. The student has a choice in how they want to further develop themself.
Schools that have a language requirement but only offer a single language are in essence forcing a language on a student. That is bad.
To make me say the pledge of allegiance in my native tongue is fine. To force me, or anyone else,  to reaffirm in 1 or 10 or 100 other languages is wrong.
