Status: offline 		Breaking news story: Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter has been killed in an accident.  CNN quote: "Steve Irwin, Australian TV presenter known as "The Crocodile Hunter," killed in marine accident, news wires report. Details soon."  News report in Herald Sun says he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

Wow. The Mate and his sons communicated with him, and several of his zoo employees some years back via email. 

My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Croc Hunter Steve Irwin dead in accident
Monday Sep 4 15:10 AEST

Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died in a marine accident in north Queensland.

The 44-year-old is believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred.



What can I say? Steve was a great blokeand will be missed.

Condolences to his family.

Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Steve Irwin, known as the ``Crocodile Hunter,'' died after being attacked by a stingray while filming a documentary, the Daily Telegraph said.
The 44-year-old television personality died after the sting- ray's barb pierced his chest, the newspaper said on its Web site. The incident occurred near Port Douglas in north Queensland state, the report said.
Irwin began catching crocodiles as a nine-year-old boy, learning from his father who started Australia Zoo, the reptile park he took over in 1991.
A spokesperson for Australia Zoo wouldn't comment on the incident.
Irwin is survived by his wife Terri, and two children, son Bob and daughter Bindi, the Telegraph said. Irwin created a furor in 2004 when he was shown holding one-month-old Bob near a feeding crocodile.

At least he went doing what he loved. Its a terrible thing he was young and had a lovely family.

I honestly never imagined that he'd die doing his daredevil TV stuff.  I've thought about it a few times, and always assumed he must really know what he's doing and would never get caught in a situation that would spin out of control.

As we see time and time again, animals are unpredictable creatures.  I am sure he was aware of the risks he was taking, but how tragic... and those little ones he leaves behind. 

I enjoyed him very much, and think he has done a lot for wildlife, but I always thought he was taking a huge risk, yet he managed to find humor in the risks..... until now <sad>

Status: offline 		With all the dangerous animals he dealt with while filming his shows, it is strange that he would die in a freak accident of this kind.
I have a bit of a problem with parents of small children doing dangerous things that could leave their children fatherless or motherless. But this was something so freakish, who could have forseen it? Has anyone else ever heard of this happening before?

How tragic!      My heart goes out to his family & friends.  

Those stingray barbs are pretty potent, though...........   
Once, I was walking along the beach collecting seashells & such.    I picked up what looked like a dryed-out fish bone, and carried it home with the rest of my treasures.    I later found it was a barb from a rather large stingray.    It had pierced my finger and drawn a drop of blood.    My finger and hand were swollen for about a week, and it hurt like hell!    It took me awhile to realize my mistake.    

I can't imagine a well placed blow from a live ray!     Hopefully it was very quick and paralyzing; so that he did not feel much pain.........if any.

Status: offline 		Hello. I live not far from his Australia Zoo, and thought the Irwin family were great ambassadors. Sadly, it was a freak accident, and Steve is around the 3'rd person to have died by a Stingray in Australia. They are passive creatures unless scared, and if Y/you are unlucky to get the poisonous ones, death is pretty quick, yet painful.

Extremely bad odds for Steve, but he died being true to himself, and doing what he loved. A likable bloke and larrikin. With luck, his family will carry on his work. It was so refreshing to see such passion.

Status: offline 		Of all the crazy risks he took, to be killed in such a freak nature. I mean, if he'd had his leg severed and bled to death from a crocodile bite, or died of a snake bite, I'd have not been surprised.  

Such a dreadful tragedy for his children..such a loss for them, it breaks My heart.

Love and thoughts to His family.
Its a terrible feak accident.  So sad.  My children and incredibly sad and loved his work.
Just shows how precious life is and not to be wasted.  And that is one thing - He and his family never wasted a second.

Status: offline 		Steve Irwin has been an inspiration to many young people......his style and delivery spawned a million affectionate impersonations....my deepest sympathy to his family and friends......my best memory of him though isn't him, oddly, it is the memory of an 8-year old impersonating him in order to show his mum a sparrow in the garden.....he touched many lives......

Status: offline 		I still can't quite get my mind around it and I feel horrible for his family and co-workers.  I have to tell my children but will do so late tonight or tomorrow, they will be upset.  My daughter once told me that she wants to take zoology in college and work at the Austraila Zoo just to work with him.

Status: offline 		Steve will be sorely missed...his style and personality will no doubt be unmatched for quite some time. At least his died doing what he loved to do and it appeared he enjoyed his life to the fullest...but at the same time I feel that not only his family has been robbed, but the world as a whole has suffered a great loss. My heart goes out to those he left behind.

Status: offline 		None of us will miss him as much as his family and friends I am sure, yet there are millions of unmentionables (young and old) who watched him religiously, and our household is very sad this day with the news of Steve Irwin's passing. I had tears for over an hour this morning from my littlest one who literally grew up watching the Croc Hunter and his adventures each day on Discovery Kids.

Status: offline 		as a fellow Aussie i still can't believe it!  i am still in shock. When i first heard i thought it was a bad joke... but sadly no.
 
He was such a great Ambassador for Australia and for wildlife conservation.
 
His poor kids... and of course his wife and the rest of his family and friends.
 
So young... but he did die doing what he loved... a freak accident though... so cruel
