Ok so perhaps you are not ignorant but if you honestly think that the War between the states was about freeing the slaves, or that the Federal Government cared about the rights of the slaves, you are naive. Wars of all kinds- past and present- are never waged for unselfish reasons. *Lets' not forget who SOLD those people into slavery, or forget that their descendants are much better off now because of the suffering and sacrifice of their ancestors.* And to stay on topic- about the Confederate flag- it became a symbol of hatred and has been perverted by bigots. I do not think people who fly that flag are wanting to embrace history, (unless they are re-inactors).. the majority of rebel-flag wavers are redneck assholes. *And also.. that is my avatar, not my lips, Jane. you have a good one too!*

i came in on this thread on page 7 and skipped a couple of pages so if i repeat what someone has said i apoligize the Emancipation Proclomation was created in responce to the sucsession of the sothern states, not the otherway around the KKK is based out of West Virginia a group of counties that sucseded from its state to remain in the union states in the north had slaves Lincolns family had slaves the reasons the states sucseeded included economic reasons but not slavery Maryland, a state that slavery was ilegal, was held in the union by force so that the capitol would not be surrounded yes the flag is used as a symbol of hate, but it is also used by groups that are proud to be from a confederate state, with no use of hate.

The economy of the south was tied hand in hand with slavery, hence all the fuss.. Anyhow... Regarding the whole argument of flying the confederate flag and having it not mean the 'bad' things it represents... There were many Nazi's who did not actively participate in the extermination of the Jews. There were many parts of Nazism, especially in its foundations, which were about societal pride, and many other issues, including the economic development of Germany,etc etc. The funny thing is, you do not see many Germans today flying the flag of the Nazi party, even if they do feel pride for their country, because of the hurts and hates perpetrated under its colors. Another thing that puzzles me is the whole idea of... having a separate flag from the country you are a part of to show your pride. The fact of the matter is the Confederate flag is the flag of a 'country' which separated itself from the US and the ensuing war caused the greatest number of American casualties in the history of our nation. No one throws a hissy fit when a bunch of southerners rally together with the confederate flag a-wavin in the breeze... but get a bunch of immigrants (both legal and illegal) rallying to become a part of this country with any hint of their native flag in evidence, and everyone shits a brick about it.... hrm....

the nazi flag was made ilegal in germany. also one of the key principals of nazism is the creation of the master race blacks were not the only slaves in the south, yes they were the majority, but people tend to forget that there were white slaves as well as many other races most groups have their own banners or symbols for their organizations although many do not fly it as a flag. each state does fly a flag and i know many people that are proud to be a north carolinian or a new yorker it could very well said that the union sould have stayed in the north and minded their own business. again the war was not about slavery. ilegalizing slavory in the sucseeding states was used as a threat to get states not to sucseed.

Well... rather than get into a pissing contest about something that really I am not all that interested in anymore, I will just say... I find errors in your information, from the information I have gathered. This topic really has been pretty much hashed out, and both sides have presented their info and ideas on it so its getting a bit tedious.

Not exactly. So-called "white" slaves in the South had to have black ancestors through the maternal line; otherwise they could not legally be enslaved.
