Only Nixon could go to China. By that same logic, I believe only a Democrat would be able to re-instate the draft.

Like I thought, those without offspring to send off into harm's way see no problem in sending mine off... over my dead freakin body... If you want a war that is an easy way to get one....

BTW, were you insinuating that girls not fight? And why shouldn't they Rich? Why is it immoral and horrible to ship the Bush girls, but it's ok to send mine? You never addressed that.

Rich, these idiots started this war and then proceded to do everything possible to fuck it up and yes, a Democrat IS going to be the one cleaning it up. I think we should only draft those who voted for Bush, the rest of us should get all the deferments that in Vietnam went to Republicans like Cheney, he got five so that will go a long ways. When all the Republicans are used up, then Democrats will suit up and fight, we tend to do it more often than Republicans anyway.

At least this way, we will have competent people leading and planning the war and plenty of cannon fodder to fight it. Sounds fair to me.

      Then let's hope he doesn't decide to rebel by enlisting in the Marine Corps. Unless maybe he decides that your right to run off at the mouth is a freedom worth defending. Stranger things have happened.

      Women in combat, especially under a hypothetical draft, is one of those things I have trouble with. You want to start a thread on it, I'll probably weigh in. Logically, equal treatment under the law requires it, but ethically and emotionally.... Not so easy.

     I'm a long way from the top 5% but the guy who signs my paycheck and provides a pretty nice benefits package is somewhere close. Health Insurance has been rising steadily but his taxes are low enough that my contribution has stayed steady. The REALLY rich people are spending enough on our services to put a little off-budget overtime into those checks too. That winds up allowing me to pick up nasty little toys like the things that come off CrappyDom's lathe. I'm even able to slip a few bucks here and there to a starving student or give the leftover soda and sandwich from lunch to a homeless guy instead of saving them for the next day.


      Just a few words to nobody in particular about future draft-dodging; if they try claiming homosexuality, they will be expected to prove it. Navy medical corpsmen wind up in combat with the Marines. The Air Force, on the other hand, generally sends the officers off to get shot at. Canada might still be an option but don't expect another amnesty. Drug addicts, convicted felons and the mentally ill are excused. There are serious ramifications to political undesirability but I know that one has worked.

That would indeed be a strange thing seeing he has attempted to sign petitions against the war but I told him that he was not old enough to sign on to anything

You call it running off at the mouth... I call it raising hell and if you aren't willing to do so for your children you really shouldn't have any.

Of course you have trouble with sending girls into combat.. it goes along with that whole family values women are weak and need to be protected bullshit. I have no trouble sending girls into combat if we are going to send our boys. I do not think that being born with a double X chromosome makes one exempt from duty.. going to institute a draft.. send the rich and send the girls.. why should pussies get a free ride (both literal and figurative).

My son has no trouble standing up for his convictions and does so when I am not even around, he has no need to rebel by joining the marines, which with his brains would really be a waste when he could get into the Air Force like his mother (yes I enlisted once upon a time before the first gulf war). There is a proud tradition of mitilary service on both sides of his family.. but fighting for oil isn't his speed, and killing Iraqis has nothing to do with my freedom of speech.. I have actually educated my son and he reads so it is doubtful he would see it as necessary to join the military in some misguided act of rebellion, nor would he be likely to believe the mass media.

Like I said, you have no offspring to lose, nor have you shed a drop of blood yourself. You support chickenhawks which show utter contempt for those who have actually served this country

backwards hippies! i went to an event entitled earthdance and on the website that gave out the information it says there is a 25 dollar donation for both days. in my language, donation means give if you want to. going the 2nd day, the people who owned the space that held it asked if i payed for both days yet. i said no confused and he said oh it'll be 25 bucks, that's good because you get a discount for both days.

not only that but i checked and the money was going towards the space holders, not the featured charity. i mean seriously, how backwards is that? when did a donation become mandatory, and not go towards the charity where money was supposed to go to. :-\ that toatlly goes against freedom and the message. i'm thinking about doing a similiar thing but in the park, potluck, and everything that you have around the house bring sorta thing for free, like it should be..but that's the stuff that makes me mad! being opposite of what your trying to accomplish.

There is no such thing as blue or red states that was just made up to pit people aganist each other. My son was in the Marines and Lord do they brainwash you but I dont say anything I have learned we are on very different sides of this event and I am glad he is home in one piece.
BTW Iraq is not a war because congress did not approve a war and despite what our president thinks only congress can approve a war.

       Well that's mighty enlightened and liberal of you Julia. Since I don't agree with you, just assign a set of values to me that are easy to attack. I never said this.       I'm going to take a leap here, just speculating. You said you enlisted, not that you served. I'm guessing your pregnancy interfered with following through? Make it a hypothetical if I'm wrong. What if your recruiter had said "tough shit. Get an abortion?" What if it came in the form of a written order? Or should we just codify a "fertile Myrtle" exemption? That is just one of the things that trouble me on the subject. I'm undecided.

Not sure how you made that leap Phil. Run over to the 'controlled demolition' thread though, and you'll find some people arguing that the Bush administration is a wonder of efficiency, and powerful beyond anything the world has ever known.

I suspect I used an Americanism that didn't travel well. Do a search if you have any interest in Politcal Science. It's an apt analogy.

Im not ashamed I got pregnant the same week I took the oath. I never said I wanted to force people to get abortions... but I would go a step further, why not let family men out of the draft.. children need two parents, not one.

I DO see it as reverse sexism

On edit, lots of mothers serve in the military and some of them have come home maimed for life or dead
