Well folks, i've been thinking about this alot lately, and as Americans it is indeed a testament to our very culture that such a question that has been raised should be answered definitivly, some people have indeed fought over this question, I know I have, I have scars on my body to prove it. So to this populous of my countrymen, and some who are not of this country, I deliver this debate.

Who would you say the third greatest rock guitarist in history is? I say third because We can all agree on two individuals int eh form of Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, now who belongs in the number one and two spots respectfully is another issue [I personally favor Eddie].

However the seat of number three is such a hot issue, who can possibly fill such a role in comparison to these two? where it not rock i would say B.B. King as a maybe.

Perhaps Eric Clapton when he was still on heroin? Eddie Van Halen himself said he was good back then, but to be a great one must maintain that greatness...suffice to say, Clapton hasent done that.

So lets get this thing started, who is number 3?

Mentionables: Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Dave Gilmour

(Oh and Francis Dunnery but only because I went to school with him.)

Hello A/all,

I would have to give a nod to Keith Richards, Slash, and the guitarist from Smashmouth.

Go listen to his rock / flamenco strumming on the song Padrino...

The musical talent in the band really dried up when he left it :(

Satriani over Van Halen? no way.

I give the guy props because he taught plenty of folks but hell I 'd take Page over him by both skill and influence.

But still below Eddie.

Another brilliant guitarist that nobody has mentioned is Randy Rhodes.  The guy was a genius.  Ozzy went to crap after he died.

There are many great guitarist. They have to be teamed with a good band to shine. Nobody gives Mitch and Noel credit for helping make Hendrix sound great. AC-DC  has a great rhythm section setting the table for Angus to do his thing. I always like Tony from Sabbath, Richie from Deep Purple and Jimi from Led Zep. Who is the best is only opinion. Yes Jeff Beck was great in the Yard Birds also...

Jimmy Page.

Dazed And Confused .... The Rain Song .... Kashmir... In The Evening .... Page is a master of guitar, from the most tender and heartbreaking notes to wired fury.

Notables:

David Gilmour - Comfortably Numb
Duane Allman (too soon gone) - listen to the At Fillmore East album and be blown away.
Mark Knopfler - Brothers In Arms, Romeo and Juliet
Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Blue On Black

Thank you for the kind words, Katy . It took me a bit to truly appreciate Knopfler, but I'm a huge fan now.
