I think that the question needs to be more focused. In what genre of music? Most people here are mainly mentioning rock guitarists. But what about Les Paul? Chet Atkins? Segovia? Joe Pass? Wes Montgomery? Danny Gatton? Duane Allman? Robben Ford, Doc Watson, etc. If we are talking rock, there are so many great ones, but which ones were the most influential? You got to go with Chuck Berry first of all. That is where most guitarists started. Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Eddie Van Halen ( although Eddie went the show over feeling route, which I am not so fond of) probably top three in influence after that. And Stevie Ray Vaughn was a monster. He has to be in there. My favorite is Jeff Beck. His playing never ceases to amaze me. Soulful yet out there at the same time. And if anyone is interested in guitar playing that will knock your socks off, check out The Hellecasters.
