Level - you do rock.  Thank you for noting Mark Knopfler.

My friend said Mark Knopfler gave guitar lessons at his school and no one was really interested. Now he is famous, there are apparently a million students that went through that school and had lessons from Mark Knopfler.

My point being, how much intrinsic talent does an individual rock star have? To paraphrase Shakespeare, some guitrists are born great, some become great and some have greatness thrust upon them.

I always liked Peter Green myself, though like most, I can see his limitations.

Mark Knoppfler of Dire Straits.
Versatile, smooth. Writes great music and lyrics as well as playing great in many styles.

Also Jimmy Page for similar reasons.

I admire people who are more than just technicians in their field, but have heart and soul and multi talents that go through changes.

I personally go for a few different aspects, I look for guitarists who arent just technically sound, but also have a background of other instruments for a more versitile musical talent, preferably classical backgrounds, also as important is influence on music from thier own works [Hendrix of course was the innovator] not just other guitarists mind you but all rock in general. Once in a while the innovater gets passed up, such as how Eddie Van Halen was influenced by Clapton but soon whizzed right past him.

My personal pick is that I have Hendrix and Eddie tied for first [I mean cmon, who can compete with Eruption?]

as for three I wanna say Jimmy page cause he fits into how much he influenced other things, though I feel he is tied in actual technical skill with the likes of Steve Vai

As for Satriani I dunno i'm just not as impressed by him, he does have alot more influence in that he directly taught a bunch of guys but as for the actual music, I dunno it seems a bit lacking in comparison to the rest I listed above.

As for the rest, I dunno guys, if they can be beaten by Santana or Prince [Fuckin Prince for chirstsakes guys!] I dunno if they should even be mentioned. "cough" slash *cough*

I think a good way to judge is if you listen to a song specifically for the gutiar instead of the rest of the band as can be said with Van Halen and Hendrix. If it stands on its own then you know you got the makings of the greatest gutiars of all time, hell rock gods.

And yeah, before any of you say it, yeah yeah Tigers got a hard on for Van Halen.

...its always tricky to make such a list...........but perhaps we ought to mention the Edge. i'm actually not an enormous fan of U2  (everything after 'under a blood red sky' is crap) but his style was enormously influential.

I gotta admit I do like the sound he has on New Years Day.

seeks - a comment which seems again to suggest you dont know what you're talking about - but at the same time does LOL!

Given the way he plays, it is entirely possible that Yngwie has five or more fingers and a thumb, on four or maybe six arms; to listen to him one would think he was playing two or three guitars all at the same time! Strange he's not too well known outside the world of guitar nuts like me. So assuming only position 3 is open, it has to go to him IMO.

Hi sozzled stripy one!

Malmenstein (I think thats how its spelt but not sure), is amazing and I am not sure I can really describe in words how he sounds, except to say that it sounds like he's playing two or three instruments at a time!

What made an impression on me was a recording of him playing some high tempo classical piece (dont remember which). He didnt just knock out the tune of it as the likes of me would, but produced the entire piece it seems, including the woodwind, brass and strings scores, all himself and with a lot of flair too!
