Yesterday I heard a radio advertisement for Nurses here in Myrtle Beach. We have 3 or 4 brandnew Hospitals here and this area is growing like wildfire.
The housing market here is extremely reasonable compared to the North East and you can get a brandnew 3 b/r, 2 bath house here with a 2 car garage for about $200-$225 K.
Try THAT up North.
We also have 60 miles of warm water sand beaches, 3200 restaurants, 110 golf courses and very mild winters with ave daily temp in Jan of 59 degrees.
That's the first time I've heard advertisements for Nurses here.
Must be a serious shortage!
Sounds like a Nurse could write their own ticket here.

I worked in Myrtle Beach for a bit. It was ok. I love living in NC and working at a major university hospital. The current large hospital in Myrtle is very nice, I have a few friends that work there.  Nurses are looking for alot more than something to bring them to a facility. we are looking for the things that will keep us there.

How many hurricans do you get per year? How much you pay for your house means squat if it gets swept or blown out to sea.

sweetnurse, and what would that be? The things that would keep them there.
Mr D, Amaros, LOL, no, we really don't get that many Hurricanes. You must be thinking of the Outer Banks in NORTH Carolina.
We might get grazed by the side of a storm once in a while and no I don't think we'll be "underwater" anytime soon.

Well, like where I work we have a workshare type thing. If patient satisfaction is a certain amount we get $500-$1000 every quater. Being a nurse for a while I am looking for things that make sure I am financially secure in the future. Such as an employer matching retirement savings etc. Alot of these places put the sign on bonus out there but the catch is you get half first (taxable of course) and the other half in a year. Tuition reimbusment is another thing that can keep the younger ones there for awhile and us that have been around can go back to school. Certainly shift diffs and weekend diffs are good to. Its not getting to a place to work that is a problem its wanting to stay there. Magnet status is the new thing now. It means a facility has been audited and approved as a place that retains nurses and promotes more autonomy with nurses. Btw I live in NC and we do get alot more hits from hurricanes than SC does but its not so bad.

I thought all Hospitals and Medical Facilities were offering those things now with the Nursing shortage.
I was just surprised by hearing that ad because I'd never heard an ad on the radio here looking for Nurses in the two years that I've lived here.
This is a very nice area to live in and I didn't think they'd have any problems attracting Nurses.

The bigger hospitals can afford the ads and incentive pays etc. Smaller ones can't. The shortage is getting worse because the baby boomer nurses are reaching a retirment age and not enough are going into nursing school to fulfill needs. Lots of schools are teaching student nurses to be management but we need bedside nurses. Too many chiefs.

I'd feel as though I was doing my profession a disservice if I didn't speak up and mention that there ARE shortages of other types of positions in hospitals all over the country, too!  Lab techs, radiology techs, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, histology and cytology techs.  I have the utmost respect for nurses, and they deserve every bit of it, but so do the other professions!

I guess this is my rant for the day....it seems like all we ever hear about is nurses, nurses, nurses.....but hey, what about the rest of us???

(Once again, NO disrespect is intended for any nurses here!)

Yeah, that figures, everyone's a friggin "Manager."
Schools should start looking at Baby Boomers who are retired early or maybe might want a career change.
I wanted to go into Nursing myself when I got out of the USCG on disability but the friggin V.A. wouldn't let me.
"The Veteran may not participate in any training which would further injure him or her or further aggravate existing injury."
I was too old to be a Doctor at that point (40).

There is a nursing shortage in general pretty much everywhere and also with all others medically trained positions around the country. I have had headhunters call me to almost the point of harrassment. Personally for me, location is way down on the list of priorities.

I have enjoyed significant autonomy  throughout my carreer as a nurse...BSN Univ of MD 1978. Our liscence opens many doors. I have worked  in hemotology and renal transplant in school and as a new grad; 25 yeats in various psychiatric venues from Hopkins Forensic Sexual Disorders to community based units. I had my own consulting practice on violent patient control and seclusion and restraint/self defense for health care workers. I've taught seminars and been the medical gatekeeper for a med surg psych hospital. Of late I have changed to emergency services to be more marketable. My house will be paid off in 18 months and hope to do some travel nursing ...love that snow too.
So  being 55, I have a great time and love my work. I get  to dominate pain and suffering...lead the confused into clarity, and ask women to open their mouth so  I  can slip something in.....the thermometer you naughty minded people!!!

popeye, there is and has been for a number of years now a World Wide Nursing shortage.  This is a multi layered shortage, from it being a forced shortage due to schools keeping entrance limited,  the nature of the work, it is very unsafe and many end up injured and not able to work again.  It is not just the phycialities of the job but the exposure to every disease we know of and those we have no idea about yet.  Then there is the shift work and working 365 days of the year, it is a strange group who are willing to leave their family on Christmas day and go to work.

On top of that is the pay scale,  now honestly I feel I make an ok wage, however I am in Canada and I believe I earn more than many in the USA do.  We do get some extra money for working weekends nights holidays etc, however truly is it enough?  Then again what is enough?

Should one who is working with humans make less or more than a construction worker, electrician .....the list goes on.

Generally in regard to the Nursing shortage, the big countries, US, UK, Canada are stealing from the countries that are less advantaged such as Philipines and the orient.

Owned, I think payscales should fall under the law of supply and demand. However there's millions of lawyers out there who would disagree with that I'm sure.

Comment abut the flow of nurses / medical professionals from the third world to the developed countries is an important one. The law of supply and demand is fine but in some countries which have very little money to invest in the first place the luring away of people they have invested in to work for vast sums in Europe and the USA is resulting in people dieing in the poorer country. In the UK there were / are!! suposed to be measures to halt the transfer from some countries but most of it has been just words and not action.
Seems to me that the US and other fist world countries shoul rig the maket by training up a few more people.

popeye is the picture you practising taking a cigerrettes pulse ??????

Question for the medical professionals out there.....did you go into the medical profession for the money or because you enjoyed helping people?

I was a school teacher before I switched to nursing. I always wanted to be a nurse but when I did it, I did it for the money. It has not let me down. I work travel and per diem, make excellent money, and love being a nurse! I love my specialty. It was the best thing I ever did.

Money had nothing to do with it, not that I do not like it. My father is a doctor and so is my older brother, it was just something I was exposed to and liked a lot. I think I can honestly say, as far as one can state, that if they cut all RN pay everywhere by a very large percentage I would still enjoy my job. I also think being submissive played a large part in my choice.

That being said I do see a lot of people go into the medical field strictly for the money and while many do not stay or go into less front line areas, there are still too many that are stone cold mercenaries which I do not care for.
