I keep hearing about the bombardment of us by the left wing media.

I am curious which major media you might consider left wing.
I don't mean blogs, PBS, websites or individual programs. I want to know which major media people might consider left wing.

I am left wing. But critical. I don't take media that goes my way without critical though and investigation. The more it backs up my views the more I try to confirm it.

It surprises me what I consider to be a bit right wing media, is called left by some.

So I'd say CBC, BBC would be more left. Not rabid crazy left. The odd documentary or individual show may go too far in opinion and not clarify it as opinion. But I feel comfortable taking most of their hard news segments as having factual basis. The news is not always perfectly factual, left or right, as it is a competitive realm.
A magazine like Mother Jones, I consider hard left. The opinion pieces, I take with a grain of salt, and I consider facts presented may be cherry picked, but real. So an article from there would have me fact checking a bit.

Of course Mother Jones is not a major media mogul reaching millions every day.

The US doesn't have any leftwing media from what I have seen. The channels you cite I regard as centrist. I'm struggling to think of a leftwing television channel. I receive five different national news channels where I live and not one would I consider leftwing. As for reading material, I can only think of the New Statesman that is on the left which is a serious weekly and not above critical analysis of the left. The dailies The Guardian and Independent I consider centrist.

Oh there is the Workers Revolutionary Party paper but that I think is only read by both the party members.

There is the Volkskrant here in Holland which is towards the left but it is hardly reds under the bed stuff and is one of the more interesting papers.

I also generally consider the ones I mentioned as centrist.( aside from MJ ) I just tried to place them in their apparent position in the current US climate that I perceive.
Being left of center, I tried to center up a bit in my description of them.

I consider them all extreme left wing.  I also consider them all extreme right wing.   They pick and chose their battles according to what will sell, pure and simple.  I think it is a part of their business plan.

there are some personalities that I believe don't change and continue to be an extreme on one side or the other.  But that should be a discussion on a different thread.

.....i am very proud of the fact that in the UK, 2 years into taking power, every government in living memory has accused the BBC of being biased against it. Shows it's doing its job, and also shows just how useless left/right labels can be.

If I were to psycho analyse that. I'd say you might have a very hard edged and compact idealogy. To perceive them as extreme left and right. Not a lot of wiggle room in your slice of the left right spectrum? Firm convictions that go both ways, but still very firm and hard edged. Interesting.

Of course that's just amateur psych.

Actually I think they push the envelope on both ends just because it sells papers and idology doesn't apply to reporting.

Yes.
News has become product. It affects both sides. That's why I don't believe left all the time either. And the internet is a quagmire of pseudo facts. It's frustrating all round at times. You can't believe the news you'd like to believe. Thinktanks on both sides seem to think mostly about how to sway more than inform.

Argh!!!

We have a corporate media here in the USA, nothing left wing about it.

In my opinion, the only bias that exists in American media, is bias towards selling advertising time/space.

The media CAN'T be left-wing because the media in this country are run by corporations whose purpose is to make a profit.

Since when are left wingers opposed to making a profit? I think Hollywood is doing very well as far as profits go, and they are definitely left wing.

US liberals aren't leftists, they are centrists. That is the perspective from here anyway. I have never heard anyone in Hollywood advocate leftwing policies. Not in the last 35 years or so and maybe more.

I tend to disagree fervently.   Wasn't it Richard Gere that advocated taking action against the soldiers sent to do the fighint?

Fast Reply:

Is PBS (the Public Broadcasting System) considered 'major media'?

I loved it when Bill Moyers was there a long time ago... but those in power there seem to hang more to the right, these days!  But hey, Moyers is back...and hopefully not censured.

Yes, I'm an non-educated, left-wing, tree hugger who's not particularly 'into' politics.  Does that mean my opinions don't count?  Sometimes I enjoy reading your comments here, though; thanks.

That is not a leftwing policy, more an anti-war stance which can come from both right or left.

My reply wasn't a criticism, just an observation. I think the misunderstanding comes from what is leftwing from a European perspective and an American perspective.

Richard Gere? Negro please.

"The Media" is not the actors, it's the corporations that run the media, actors are individuals and free to say any damn fool thing they please, right or left - there's plenty of Randists and right wingers running their yaps (Mel Gibson), and picking movies that promote Randist and religius right philosophy - I was noticing all the Randist influences in "Soldier", with Kurt Russel last night (strong, silent man of action, gets the girl when her callow husband is conveniently killed), "The Rapture" almost made me gag, as did "Frailty" (Matthew McConaughey) - Randist themes are particularly popular, always have been, rugged individualism and all that - "Starship Troopers"? Happen to see that or read the book?
