Can I just point out that Japan gives more in economic aid than America does.  This idea that America somehow feeds and clothes the world while the rest of us rely on your taxpayers is a silly myth.

Honestly. It really is.

Power coorupts, and it in goverment does so absolutly, it is evident in all rulerships based upon nationstates.. it has always been one corrupt ruler against the other.. sadly give a man a sword, a hammer, a bow a M16 or a Nuke and they become a madman. Give nation Hegonomy and it eats the others for lunch..  We need somethign other.. will we get it.. perhaps.. the world is getting hotter by the day so perhaps when the last vapors of water leave this brown globe peace will come.. peace at last..

No wonder you wear diapers.

There will never be another country to supplant the US as the world leader because no other country will ever step up and become that leader. That is the way it has been for years, and that is the way it will continue to be.

Replying to the subject, not the OP, not another post (I just get lazier and lazier....)

I'd rather have the most powerful nation being the imagination.

And that's all I have to say on that subject.

Yours,

.............having technology exceeding any built by Rome before the village of Rome was named, and after Romes borders collapsed...... consitently China has been the world super power more often than any other , but it has always faltered when it has looked outside its borders and said "there is nothing to offer us here".....(and so become isolationist).

I suspect that there contnues to be an over simplification of what constitues "power", an ability to overwhelm an opponents conventional forces and threaten to destoy their cities at will may not constitute power in the next 50 years. Who sets international law, where are the main international voting blocks, where is the flow of money and investment, which currancies are rising and which falling.......?

I was a Euro sceptic but now (after living in the US for a short while) think that perhaps it is the way forward and so my gamble is that a continent that destoyed itself twice in 50 years and has grown to a position where it rivals the US in economy, and international politics (but not military & has no intention of so doing) perhaps will match but not supercede the US by 2050. The EU also shows a possible model for the slow development of other international institutions. ........but it has a long way to go.

I think another question is will the US throw away the mantle of world leadership rather than that another country will take it. Is someone a leader if noone will follwo them?

I see you read that article by Malcolm Gladwell on the earner/pensioner quotient.

China WILL be a superpower, but not one we're going to have to fear.  In fact, it'll be a relief once they have to face some Islamic extremism of their own.

This explains why the Chinese are actively trying to steal as much of our military technology as they possibly can.

China will eventually try to step up and be a world leader.  They will not, however, do it because they actually care about the rest of the world.  China has historically done everything entirely out of self-interest.

Amen!

We should also mention, as stated by Fukuyama I believe, that Japan uses "soft-core power" or power of culture as a means to influence the world favorably on Japan....this meaning their manga cartoons, their electronics, cars, etc. without having to prove they are a military threat to anyone.

I am unhappy with the US being the only superpower around vs many smaller regional powers....at least in the cold war there were two super powers whereby there was some choice and leverage for developing countries to become friendly with one or the other in order to get aid and benefit their own little nations. I for now (although I am hard core anti-communist) prefer China or Russia to become super powers ALONG WITH the USA simply so that we live in a more balanced world...everyone benefits....the US will benefit in that it will not be on the spoghtlight all the time, and the other(s) superpower(s) can take some blame as well for their actions. The US under Bush has not become popular due to extensive meddling in affairs and parts of the world that the US should not be in. Just my two centavos.

as for my vote (not being realistic here) it goes for Chile, a small, responsible nation, an example for L.A.

Racquel Welsh, many will be shocked to find out, was born in Bolivia, and later became a US citizen.

Rumor has it we Americans are fairly measly when it comes to foreign aid, at least as measured as a percentage of GDP. And much of what we do give goes, I think, to Israel and Egypt.

I did indeed, Lam. Very informative. I haven't read the Krugman article yet, but it's in line. I'm finishing Running On Empty tonight, it deals with some of the same topics, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in these things.

A basic question based on the fact that so many people seem to begrudge the US it's power possition, and are activly seeking to change it.

If you make the US less powerful, then by default someone else becomes the new "Most Powerful Nation". Who would you propose that replacement be?

It's a ridiculous question (rather, the assumed question...no offense meant)because most people are self serving.  If they aren't, natural selection installs a new player.  It's God playing rollerball once again.

If you could have all the food necessary to sustain you and all your friends for your entire lifetimes, and instead of even portions, simply by asking, you could have 15% of everyone's portion (plus your own) delivered and stacked in your pantry...would you rather have even shares delivered to all....or yours...plus 15% of all remaining?

Of course you'd opt for the latter.  You can always share (because you know you're rational...right?)...but who's to say that they will (or that they will be)?

If given all options as to any other country having the current market share of control over world politics and leadership....would you pick any other country?

Fine...name them and why you'd choose them.

Of course no one would choose any other...but no one can argue...this one has declined in the last 6 years...and only in the last 6 years.

(I'd still choose us).

Hello A/all,

The Japanese Constitution dictated to them at the close of World War 2 stated that they cannot spend more than 10% of their GNP on their military.

10% of however many billions or trillions of dollars their economy is worth is a lot of money, but since they are under the umbrella of the US military and really dont need to worry about things like war and defense, the Japanese have preferred to use their tremendous wealth to do things like acquire American banks (who hold the liens on American real estate) and retool their factories so they can sell  cars to the US.

It also provides them with a lot of surplus capital to use to curry favor among other nations.  The Japanese have applied their cultural ideal of being polite to their international relations, and it has paid off for them.

When you have a big bad friend in the neighborhood who will beat up anybody that messes with you, it is very easy to be nice to everybody.

Just me, could be wrong, etc.

While I may agree with what you stated Sinergy, I think the regime in Pyongyang is as stable as ever, and the US has not even tried to undermine it....instead it chose to attack a weaker nation like Iraq...the truth is that no one can look after their own interests as much as their own....hence soon the day will come when Japan will have to take a more military active role at least in the Asian region.
