Status: offline 		In a previous post titled :"how did you know you were Dom", several people mentioned that being Dom wasnt self proclaimed, that a person knows they are Dom when others look to them as a Dom and respect them.

This is a notion that I firmly beleive in when it comes to D/S. So for the purposes of perspective and discussion, I wanted to take that notion further and ask "What earns a person the title of Sir or Master?"

Status: offline 		People who believe this usually say that it's earned when others that you respect start using it to refer to you. There's no rule book or curriculum to work through in order to earn other people's respect. Outside approval can be a powerful thing. Having someone you greatly respect call you Master or Sir or Grandpooba is deeply gratifying. But, what if the people who first start using your title are the very ones you DON'T respect? Does that mean that you're a crappy Master?

For me, self identification was extremely important and a huge step in my self development. It was an issue of my seeing my own self-worth. I never require anyone to use the title, however. I use it because it is who I am. This makes no comment about how well I feel I'm doing or where I am in my perceived development. I will never do as well as I think I could/should but I acknowledge that I am exactly where I should be.

Status: offline 		A number of years ago I arrived at a place in this that Master was a proper identifier for me from my own recognition of my abilities, capabilities & applications of such as well as recognition from others in my community.

The only legitimate users of these titles
are certified by the Registry Of True Masters Inc.

I know this because when I bought my title(s)  from them
out of the back of my BatGirl comic book
they said so.... right there in black and white.

As in most things here,  this is just my personal opinion.

Not really sure when one "earns" the title of Sir or Master.  Though I think the more someone insists on being called either;  the less they deserve either.  If you have to "demand" it;  you've not earned it.

Here online (and in some cases,  real life) I've found the willy-nilly use of the titles have actually LESSENED the importance of either word.

I get into this a bit in my profile.  I don't expect a sub to call me Sir unless she's under my wing.  And I've reprimanded girls for calling me Master.  The only people who are to call me Master are subs that I've actually collared or my students.  (And the students will normally call me SongSangNim,  not Master).

Status: offline 		Sometimes when chatting with someone, I feel the NEED to call someone "Sir".  It is a show of respect and acknowledgement that I am sub to their statement or question.  I have been known to snap off a "Yes, Sir!" when given an order, in a sarcastic manner, with a cocky salute.

The term "Master" only comes from me when I feel as though I've been mastered. Mentally or physically.

Status: offline 		Originally, when this sort of thing was more regimented (or less watered-down as has been the phrase du jour lately), there was the Old Guard and European styles of BDSM.  You had to go through certain stages to attain certain titles.

I started shortly after that, so I can't point to 'that'.

I think it is how you referred to it, 'when others see you that way'.  And no, having one's companion deem you All Great Somethingorother doesn't really cut it.

For me, it was when I was recognized in my community as a leader of sorts, or someone they wanted to involve in 'their' play.

You can call yourself whatever you want, it amounts to 'not much'.  But when others think of you in a certain way, you can at least make reference of that to others (no matter how you feel about yourself).

I am sorry actually that is all that matters to me.  I am Master because she deems me worthy to own her, no more, no less.

I need no grand poba in a funny hat to deem me anything.  I generally discourge others from calling me anything but my name.  There are a few who call me sir when they speak to me and I humbly accept becasue from them it is a sign of respect they think I deserve.

   I so agree with this, I see the ones who put more into the community and they are the ones who get the respect from the community. We had a guy come ot a party a dew weeks ago and he said he had been in the lifestyle for over a year and he told EVERYONE that he was to be addressed as MASTER so and so, and he said this to some of the Dominants that are very well known in our group. Well needless to say he was pretty much ignored him the rest of the night. he did not show any respect to others so he got none from us.
Another thing about titles being earned, is the one that I take great pride in having and being certified to hold that title is the one of Chef. I earned the title with hard work and I always showed my employees respect when working with them, I would not ask them to do anything that I was not willing to do myself, from peeling potatoes to breaking down turkeys on Thanksgiving day.
While I do see many on this website that thru their postings and such I feel have the ability to be a Master or Sir if that is how they wish to be refered to, many of them do not use the title in there ID here, mainly because they know that just by putting it there does not show that you are one.

Status: offline 		I use the term Sir for those i respect as Dominants or Maam whichever the case may be.  Master is the name reserved for the One that will own me.

Status: offline 		I agree with diamonddreamlove. Sir is easily given, and a general sound of respect for the station. Master needs to be earned, and in the old tradition it is from an earned collar or true slave. Neither title can be self-assigned. Both are given.
