Lashra -> Art Teacher Lose Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture (9/28/2006 12:19:19 PM)

Apparently a 5th grade art teacher took her class to the art museum and some of the kids saw a nude sculpture. All of the children had signed permission slips from their parents. When the children returned  home from the field trip they told their parents that they seen a nude sculpture in the museum. Well some of the parents raised hell and the teacher has been dismissed.

I think the human body is a beautiful thing and art can express that beauty. I was raised that way. I am guessing these parents view nude art as disgusting or perhaps as porn[&:]
Regardless I don't feel the teacher should lose her job, the parents signed the permission slips and they should know the teacher cannot control what the museum has on display.

The United States gets lamer and lamer every day from their PC crap.  The Dems should be shot for ever introducing that nonsense... Look what it has come to..  May all the womyn say "aye".  [8|]

While I think that each parent has the right to decide whether their child should see nude art, they exercise that right through permission slips.  That the parents did not inform themselves of what an art gallery is, I blame on the Republicans.

Top that off with the fact that this trip was mandated  the district and I see something beyond thesculpture being the real issue in her fireing.
Not sure what that might be but the mandated trip resulting in a fireing kinda has me suspecting they wanted her out for some other reason and this was a convienient excuse they could get away with.

PC? Dems? Womyn? Eactly what do any of these elements have to do with the article or the issue?
So many words to say absolutely nothing, Kenin. But then what else is new with you?

According to the article, the teacher had been with the school district for 28 years and had received the Star Teacher Award just two years ago.

Just another example of the hysterical, anti-sex religious right at work.

In My eyes, this is one of those situations where everyone is being too politically correct.  We can not see a penis!!  Holy shit!!  Put underwear on it or something.  That is the pinnacle of politically correct stupidity.  It was the Dems that started the PC nonsense, and now it has escalated out of control to the point where a kid can not even see a piece of art without some stupid ass parents getting their titties in a twist.

Womyn was My way of being sarcastic, because that is more politically correct crap.

It is not My fault you can not perceive more than "eat, sleep and have sex".

Archer -> RE: Art Teacher Lose Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture (9/28/2006 12:59:05 PM)

She's an Art Teacher and the District mandates that she take the kids to that museum, she does so and she gets fired for a complaint that was nothing she is responsible for?
Seems to me the District is either throwing her under the bus, so they don't get the heat from the complaint, or they wanted to be rid of her and used this as an excuse.

I don't sdisagree that it's some sorry excuse for a parent that complained but the fireing is a decission the district makes.

They could have told the parent that obviously your child doesn't belong here so please send them to a church run private school or STFU. LOL Or something a bit more civilized but with the same basic message. Instead the district fires the teacher for doing her job. There is something besides the complaint that is wrong with this picture as well.

SirKenin -> RE: Art Teacher Lose Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture (9/28/2006 1:02:54 PM)

It is because the Board is a politically correct institution, trying to please everybody.  That is what they do.  So who gets to take the fall?  The teacher.  That is bullshit.  My dad was a teacher for 26 years and he put up with so much of this crap that the doctor told him to retire immediately or he was going to fall over from a heart attack.  They offered him a principals job, he refused to take it.  They offered him head of the department, he turned it down.

I could tell you stories like you would not believe of the bullshit they have to put up with from idiotic parents and dumbass students.  It would make your hair stand on end.

At the bottom of the whole thing is this "PC mandate".

So yeah, I feel for this teacher.  I really do.

CuriouslyKat -> RE: Art Teacher Lose Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture (9/28/2006 1:14:05 PM)

I heard about this while reading newsgroups,  in alt.true-crime.  They are having a real good conversation about it.

I have read in another article that there were other "issues" to her being fired, but the school district declined to say what "issues". It was all decided in a closed meeting.

Also, she requested to be transfered to another school, but was denied.

I will go look for the full article and post it.

Kat

Archer,
Correct - Sounds like we need Paul Harvey to hear; "the rest of the story". My suspicion is that the teacher leaked this incident to solicit support. Either that or this is a very rich school district that has a few extra million to spend defending and paying for a wrongful termination lawsuit. Or a very poor underprivileged district where neither the principal and the parents have never been to a museum to know that some art is uncovered.

She's been teaching for 28 years but the school has only been in existence for 6. I don't know what the rules are in Texas, but why doesn't she have tenure instead of a year to year contract? Also curious why this is showing up in a Kansas TV channel site. This story is regarding a incident that occurred last April. Slow news day in Kansas City?

Maybe Ms. McGee can take solace in #10 from the school's 'Ten Everyday Fisher Essentials'; "Be positive and enjoy life. Accept that making mistakes is a part of the process. Learn from them and move on."  Source: http://www.friscoisd.org/schools/fisher.htm

Teacher reprimanded after student sees nude art on museum trip

Associated Press

FRISCO  - School board members have voted to not renew the contract
of a veteran art teacher who was reprimanded after one of her
fifth-grade students saw a nude sculpture during a school trip to a
museum.

Sydney McGee has been on paid administrative leave from Fisher
Elementary School since Friday, said her attorney Rogge Dunn.
McGee's contract runs through the end of the school year and it was
unclear whether she would remain on leave until then. Her attorney said
he would wait for written confirmation and clarification from the
school district to decide how to proceed.

He said McGee, a 28-year veteran teacher, was upset about the Monday
decision. "If they had good reason to fire her, they would have, but they don't,"
Dunn said. "It's mind-boggling."

Board members declined to take questions after their closed meeting and
a message left with the Frisco Independent School District wasn't
immediately returned.

McGee has said her troubles started after taking 89 students on a
school field trip to the Dallas Museum of Art in April.

The principal at Fisher elementary, Nancy Lawson, later admonished
McGee about the trip, telling her a parent complained about a student
seeing nude art, said Dunn, a Dallas labor lawyer.

School officials didn't reveal which parent made the complaint.

McGee also said it was the principal who urged her to take the students
to the museum, Dunn said.

District officials have said the museum field trip didn't spark
reprimands of the teacher. They have repeatedly pointed to other
performance issues.

The district rejected McGee's request in August to transfer to another
Frisco school. They said they didn't want to give her a chance to move
elsewhere without addressing other issues, including lesson-plan
preparation.

Well this is in Frisco Tx one of the fastest growing cities in the country back in 2001/2002. It's just outside of Plano Tx a very wealthy Tax District. I still think there is more backstory than we are getting.

SirKenin -> RE: Art Teacher Lose Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture (9/28/2006 1:27:37 PM)

Hmmm.  Very interesting.  So there is more to the story than meets the eye at first.  It was just a catalyst, but a stupid one at that.

I wonder what the union has to say?  Why are there not any comments from them?

LiterarySnob -> RE: Art Teacher Lose Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture (9/28/2006 1:28:37 PM)

This is one of the problems with teaching.  Any parent with a bone to pick can drag the teacher in as their scapegoat.  Hell, it can come from both sides--check out any of the Banned Book debates.  If you DO ban the book, the liberal parents freak out about censorship.  If you don't, you're branded as racist/deviant/what have you.  It drives me insane!  It does seem slightly suspicious that a 28-year teacher is still on a yearly contract, and was fired for something this obviously stupid, but the bigger issue seems to be parents with overly active moral compasses and way too much time on their hands.

Teacher's Unions aren't "The Religious Right."
Why aren't (they) doing anything?

Lordandmaster -> RE: Art Teacher Lose Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture (9/28/2006 2:22:42 PM)

Good question, and maybe this particular teacher really does deserve the axe for something else.  But then they should axe her for what she deserves to be axed for, not for taking children to a museum where they have nude sculptures.  Objecting to nude sculptures comes from the Religious Right.

meatcleaver -> RE: Art Teacher Lose Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture (9/28/2006 2:54:45 PM)

One has to assume there is more to this story than the bare (oops!) headlines or Texas has a really big problem.

I actually studied on a nude life study course when I was 12 as a prize for having won an art prize at school. I don't think it did me any harm, hmm maybe it did which is why I now post on CM.

JustaDom -> RE: Art Teacher Lose Job After Kids See Nude Sculpture (9/28/2006 3:16:37 PM)

I find this especially comical given that on the site providing detailed information about the school, http://www.friscoisd.org/schools/fisher.htm , lists 10 Everyday Fisher Examples as a form of a mission statement.  Number 10 on the list is "be positive and enjoy life. Accept that making mistakes is a part of the process. Learn from them and move on."

Maybe it was a good thing I moved out of Texas when I did.

Joe
