So did Jim Otto of the Raiders. I understand he did it as a play on his name -- aught (or ought) also means zero, so it was aught - O.

Perhaps Graham did it for the same reason.

A few X's :

I've always really liked the 3-4 - It deals with gambling and great athleticism. The Steelers and Patriots have always done a good job utilizing it.

Just my opinion.... While most would say fast linebackers with good coverage ability are what make up a great 3- 4, I would say the key is a huge, fast nose tackle that's a threat to defeat the double team most of time. Then, one of your more athletic linebackers suited for coverage can line up in the slot and either rush the passer or drop into coverage if there's play action or the halfback comes up field as a receiver.

Holy crap lol. Happy, I meant to say Jim Otto, Otto Graham wore numbers 14 and 60, according to Google.

Yes. Parcells would have been a fool to run a 4-3 with Lawrence Taylor, and Landry would have been one to use a 3-4 while having Randy White, Harvey Martin, Too Tall Jones, and John Dutton on the squad.  Don Shula is a great example of a coach that directed both types of D, to great success.

LOL R.......... excellent job. I always liked how the Saints would take a DL out in passing situations, and use Rickey Jackson and Pat Swilling as ends.... showed great flexibility.

I tend to think a 4-3 is easier to run, but with all things being equal, a 3-4 would be a tougher D.

Marv Levy has done an excellent job with the Buffalo Bills.  I wouldn't be surprised if they upset the undefeated Chicago Bears this Sunday.  I'm sure you know Marv is the great Hall of Fame coach who went 4 times to the Super Bowl with the Buffalo Bills and now he is the general manager with Dick Jauron the former Chicago Bears coach now coaching the Buffalo Bills.

All the so-called experts criticized Buffalo for the players they drafted but Marv is a real football guy and he has done a great job.  The Buffalo defense did an excellent job with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo does not have a big fat nose tackle any more, they cut Sam Adams.  Buffalo has a very fast defense like the Chicago Bears

This year Penn State has gone to what looks like a 3-4 -- they moved their fastest LB over to a DE position and he always rushes from a standing position, or sometimes drops back into coverage. They don't have the typical monster nose tackle (except for a 340 lb freshman who is red shirting this year), and this move was probably driven by the fact that they are deep with good LBs but thin at DE except for more freshmen. . . they couldn't go out into the free agent market because they don't recruit JUCO players.

Sounds like what Bill Walsh did in San Francisco with Charles Haley; they called the posistion the Elephant. For all intent and purpose Haley was a DE, he just started in a standing posisition.

IMHO a 4-3 is much eaiser to run ,from my personal experience I didn't find a 3-4 that hard to play against.  I always have a harder time when teams are in a 4-4.  At that point I would be covered up and can't take the LB who is trying to follow behind the DE or DT.  In a 4-3 there is a good change the LB isn't coming on my side and in a 3-4 I was generaly uncovered and could get a good look at who is coming.  Of course in the league I play in we don't see much 3-4 defense esp. when they see the size of our O line.

Don't forget Lou "The Toe" Groza who holds the record for most total points kicked (1608), played for the Cleveland Browns for 21 years.

Also, Tom Dempsey, of the New Orleans Saints, who kicked the record 63 yard field goal in 1970...with half a foot.

LMAO!  Proof is in the pudding. Outside of knowing the team colors and few names off the tube, some women really do understand offenses and defenses.

The smartest women I've met with regard to strategy in sports....are the ones who have teenage sons involved in high school athletics. It wasn't but a week ago that I had a lady client / customer of mine correct her son in front of me when he was explaining how to stop the run in the ''double wing''. She knew as much about the double wing as he did - I busted up.

With regard to the 4 - 4 :  Buddy Ryan made that famous { 46 defense} when he sent everyone up to the line of scrimmage and kept Fencik back where the strong safety would normally line up if they anticipated the run.

What killed the 4-4 is four receivers running slants and a quick release. Glaneville { Remember when he used to leave tickets for Elvis} later came up with an offense he called the ''Red Gun'', but he had a crapy quarterback, so it never worked lol!
