Many thanks for the well wishes. My new landlord loves my staffie girl, and is a lawyer, so she is checking into some things for me...as well I have a call into the ADA. I have a suspicion that someone made a huge screw up, after all she does not have pet status, she is legally considered to be a medical device...sort of like saying, "Oh, so sorry, you cannot bring that type of wheelchair to this town."

What if prior to the meter reader dude coming next time you get the assistance of a submissive friend and have them chained in the back yard.  When something is said just say with a straight face......well the last dude said I have to have my pet chained up even in the private fenced backyard.

Get it on video as well as I am sure it will be priceless

Exactly! I hope thinks work out well for you and your dog. Sometimes, people forget what a blessing they can be.

I'm guessing the community that didn't make an exception for service animals when banning certain dog breeds messed up big time and the ADA lawsuit threat should get your dog officially ignored or the ordnance rewrittten with the exception.

Personally though I'm against banning certain dog breeds. I've known absolutely delightful Staffordshire Terriers, once I got over the fact that they looked like they were going to rip me to shreds, and vicious little yappy dogs that were only prevented from biting me by their inability to bite through my shoes. I'm curious if anyone has tried challenging these ordnances in court maybe over equal protection or some such.

the yard is not fenced. nor did i know what day they care coming.

i heard in California- you are not allowed to chain your dog 3 hours or longer.

Sheba did not chase the metter reader. im NOT the only one in town with a dog.

if my dog bites someone i am liable. i realize that.  but if i own my own yard- i dont think the town can tell me to leash her, control her yes- but not to restrain her.

Sheba ran up to her like she had food.  if the cable man or phone man are coming i know in advance and can put her in her pen. i wont pen her up just cos someone "says" she must be. its mean.

i did not argue with the woman. but i did not apoligise to her either.

now had she acted strange- per haps my dog might have went after her. with Sheba if she growls and shows her teeth then that is a clear warning sign.  she let my brother in when i wasnt home. that was ok with her. BUT when my brohter rummaged thru my tool box sheba showed her teeth and growled. to her he was violating my space.

my water bill is seldom out of the ballpark. 1 person usuage. no pool- no watering the lawn. it is always with in a small useage.

i dont like her attitude.   why would anyone want to OWN- if thier werent more rights then renting>?

I totally agree with you....wasn't the US supposed to be a free country? freaking bureaucrats....
I can understand in my country, I get pissed off a lot when I take my dog out, because other pet owners allow their dog to leave their property (because they left the gate open) and attack my dog on the other side of the sidewalk....now that scenario pisses me off very much, but this was clearly not your case, it was some idiot coming to your house....if I were you I wouldn't chain it....so what if he or she doesn't read the meter? oooh yeah, then they can't charge....wouldn't that be a shame? LOL

pahunkboy -> RE: chain your dog or not? (10/3/2006 4:35:02 AM)

masterk,
i purposely do not take Sheba for walks around the neighborhood. i do not want her to think it is ok to roam. her world is here.

i have nothing against people that do.

Then can't read your meter.  Then they can turn off your utilities.  Then they can charge you a fee to turn them back on.

No one should come on your property without first notifying
you and getting permission to enter.   I would fence my
property so meter readers and other riff-raff couldn't
enter without my advance knowledge.

stef -> RE: chain your dog or not? (10/3/2006 1:04:44 PM)

Then you would get your gas/water/electric service turned off.  Part of the agreement to providing you that utility grants them permission to be on your property to read the meter.  The only time they need permssion, is if the meter is inside the building then they (obviously) need to request access.

After reading some of the comments in this thread, I'm glad I don't have that job.  Where has common sense gone?

spanklette -> RE: chain your dog or not? (10/3/2006 7:28:24 PM)

DomKen,

I know of one case, which may or may not be of interest. A colleague of mine is blind and has a seeing eye dog (Wilson). Wilson is the typical seeing eye dog, except for his penchant for leading her past Starbucks because he like the bagels.[:D]

Anyway, She accepted a specialized position in a small office. When she arrives for her first day, one of her new coworkers demands that Wilson stay out of the office because she is phobic of dogs. What?!?!

On first blush, this seems like clear cut discrimination, but if she is really phobic that needs to be respected as well. Nothing has been decided yet, but the ADA is heavily involved. I'm not sure if it will escalate to anything legal. But, there ya go...

I couldn't agree more....a high fence, if I owned a house, I wouldn't want anyone being able to walk right up to my front door....and that way. no pesky neighbors kids running on your yard, and no problems as your property will be delineated. [:D]

FelinePersuasion -> RE: chain your dog or not? (10/4/2006 7:15:11 PM)

the law in CA now is you cant leash them for more than 3 hoursc ause it makes them"mean" and is "inhumane" arnold supports the bill.

pahunkboy -> RE: chain your dog or not? (10/6/2006 8:46:42 AM)

some of the "riff raff" is the 1st guy in line to sue if he twists an ankle or hurts himself trying to break in....

If Your yard is not fenced, and your dog is not on a leash, then it poses a potential threat not just to service people who need to enter Your yard, but to passers-by as well.  i cannot count the number of dog owners who assured me that their growling, snarling dog had "never bitten anyone".  i could care less.  i have a phobia about dogs i do not know, and the bigger they are, the worse the panic is.

There are more humane ways of restraining Your dog than putting it in a pen.  Keep it indoors and do not allow the run of the yard unless You are watching it.  Buy a very long leash and specially-made post that will allow the dog greater freedom than the pen without the chance of running free.  Install adequate fencing.  Aren't You at all concerned that the dog will run away or someone will steal it?
