Level -> What If: How the Democrats would rule Capitol Hill (10/8/2006 11:51:07 AM)

"IN the final weeks of this bruising campaign, the debate, in many ways, comes down to this: What would happen if the Democrats win?

Republicans warn, ever more urgently, that a Democratic takeover of Congress would mean wrenching ideological change: higher taxes; big new spending; maybe even impeachment.

Democrats insist they have no intention of an abrupt lurch to the left, offering instead a relatively modest agenda and the less-than-revolutionary rallying cry of “more oversight!”

I'll bite.

Little if nothing will change.

The majority of the Democrats.......

Supported the war.

Supported Bush's Unconstitutional legislation like the patriot 1 &2 acts
and other Police state legislation.

They are just as guilty of leaving the borders wide open

Supported NAFTA/GATT/MAI/FTAA

The agenda will continue untill finally enough people geet fed up,
throw ALL the BUMS out and make sure that politicians at ALL levels start 100% abiding by the constitution.

I couldn't have said it better!
I'm an Independant so I really don't concern myself about Democrats or Republicans, I'd use one against the other to get rid of them both.
And, there are a lot of people in the country who are getting fed up with both the Dems and Repubs and that's a good thing!

Rule -> RE: What If: How the Democrats would rule Capitol Hill (10/8/2006 2:10:32 PM)

Nearly all politicians have the same agenda, whatever their party: to fuck the electorate and the people.

I recall a story about a people that had a king for one year - do not know if it truly happened. (On the Greek island Naxos?) That king got all he wanted during that year: food, riches, women. Then at the end of his one year reign he was killed.

Those people were ruled by good kings. Good people are willing to sacrifice themselves for their people. Evil people are selfish, so few if any ever volunteered to be their king.

I wonder what the final tally would be if we could force all congressmen to take a truth serum and then answer the following question:

"Was your primary purpose for holding office to serve and benefit your constituents, or was your primary purpose to serve and benefit yourself and those close to you?"

Rule -> RE: What If: How the Democrats would rule Capitol Hill (10/8/2006 5:31:10 PM)

I fear that a truth serum will have no effect upon a politician, as their truth is not an objective, but a subjective reality.

LadyEllen -> RE: What If: How the Democrats would rule Capitol Hill (10/8/2006 6:03:15 PM)

Steady on! They dont all go into politics for personal gain, self aggrandisement and other selfish motives.

Its just that when they get there, its all too much of a temptation.

Why dont we try, paying them minimum wage, providing a modest house and limited expenses - after of course, they have ditched everything they owned up to the point of election, as a condition of office?

I wonder who'd choose to "serve the people" then?

Ahh... you're from the school who truly believes that this old joke is based on the truth:

Question: How can you tell when a politician is lying?
Answer:   His lips are moving.

Hello A/all,

Let me get this straight, the Republican party (currently in power and tripled the national debt while they were in power) is warning that Democrats might overspend?

Were they capable of saying it with a straight face?  Did their nose grow?  Did lightning strike them from the Heavens?

Somebody on another thread (or this one) was stating that lying to the American public and authorizing other people to break the law should be impeached.

Again, was it said with a straight face?

I personally think impeachment is too good for him.  I recommend jail time.

Prak, in one of the Hitchhiker's Guide Trilogy (I think book 4) was given too much truth serum.  He started to spout for The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But The Truth.

He frightened people to the point that they walled him into a steel box, surrounded by a stone box, surrounded by electrified barbed wire fences, an army division, etc.

Most people, in my experience, are incapable of facing the truth.

Andrew Jackson argued feverishly against allowing Corporations to exist.  He stated, in effect, that it would create a godless creature lacking in morals and pity, which would inflict itself without remorse on the American Public.

I don't think much would change.  There is an old navy axium.  Don't change the sails during the first 15 minutes of your watch.   Things will go on merrily FUBAR.

I assume they said it with a straight face. Both sides have their venerable slams of the other: Dems are big spenders, godless commies, tree huggers..... Republicans are homophobes, selfish, war-mongers.

Demonize your opponent, and don't let truth get in the way.

You are absolutely right, Level.  My statement that the national debt has tripled since Monkeyboy and his ilk have been in charge is completely erroneous and was stated with malice aforethought on my part.  What sort of a moron am I that I would allow factual and empirical evidence to suggest that Republican's are far worse big spenders than Democrats ever hoped to be.

Any inference I might have made that our jobs are being busily offshored to other countries, and most of the job growth statistics spread on Fox news are the result of new Wal-Mart employees and people's unemployment running out are completely erroneous.

I apologize for the mere suggestion that the Republican leaders of the United States have mismanaged our countries economy during their watch.  Additionally, I apologize for any inference that Clinton oversaw the largest economic expansion in the history of this country.

I apologize for the fact that Clinton had only 8 months to find Bin Laden and failed to do so, resulting in widespread castigation and inferences that he was not competent.  When every intelligent person knows that a Real Homeland Security Conscious president would fail to find Bin Laden so in his 6+ years in office, but that is completely understandable.

What I find amusing is that you attack me, fail to provide any reference material to support your position, and indicate that I am simply demonizing my opponents.

For the record, I dont really have any opponents.  I simply read about things happening in this country, and make my own decision about them.  This may be very much unlike many who nurse at the Faux News teat, take their Soma, and know that everything is going to be A-OK.

You are absolutely correct.  We in the United States are much better off under the Simian In Chief than we ever were under any president in modern history.

Nope, I have tried, but I am still not believing anything I just posted and have to call my doctor to schedule my lobotomy.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

Hi Sinergy. It was not with you in mind when I said "demonize your opponent"; it was a general statement about politicians that use the type of examples I listed. I did not make that clear, so I apologize for that.

I will say, though, this typecasting does go on here in CM, and in the "real" world; I've been guilty of it myself. Back when my main source of reading was The Nation, I routinely placed Republicans into convient little boxes, without regard to whether it was right to do so or not. It made things easier, I suppose, than looking for the truth, or should I say the whole truth.

I eventually found some on the left doing the sort of thing they (we) were accusing the right of. This opened my eyes a bit, and made me realize that not all Republicans were evil, or wrong.... same as the Democrats.

But, being human, I'm sure I still say things that place very large groups, and perhaps individuals, into those boxes that to me, indicate lazy thinking. Perfect I am not.

True, and the outsourcing has been going on in both Democratic and Republican presidencies (sp?).

I apologize for the mere suggestion that the Republican leaders of the United States have mismanaged our countries economy during their watch.  Additionally, I apologize for any inference that Clinton oversaw the largest economic expansion in the history of this country.

I agree that things were better under Clinton.

Both sides fucked up, if you ask me.

You are absolutely correct.  We in the United States are much better off under the Simian In Chief than we ever were under any president in modern history.

If you can find a post of mine stating that, I'd love to see it LOL.

Democrats being the majority in the Senate and Congress again?

Last time this happen, they purposely raised taxes against the wishes of President Bush Sr just so the media could say "Bush Breaks Promise."

Do we really need to have taxes raised again or some other sill law passed at our expense just to make a president look bad? That's kind of dirty politics is uncalled for.

I spend very little time demonizing anyone, they do such a wonderful job on their own...

But I will say that the people who are running the show right now are the biggest bunch of hypocritcal bullshit I have seen in my 38 years on planet Earth. The Republican Party (yes I said party, not the people voting republican) are the biggest bunch of crooks, the tip of the iceberg is all we can see.

I tend to agree with Sinergy about "monkeyboy"... although I call him a war mongering piece of shit, and i would not piss on him if he was on fire. The man could not run a 7-11, and here he is running this country. Call me a hate mongerer, say I am demonizing... well Bush is just smart enough to be an evil demon... And I am pissed off at democrats that went along to get along... they are evil shits too.

I will say, I am not a Clinton fan, but he was at least intelligent enough to avoid a nukeelear holocaust. I did not wake up every day afraid that we would have nuked Iran, or Pakistan would have nuked India, or that North Korea would have nuked Japan... excuse me, what the hell happened to the world since GW took over as leader of it?

Everything that Bush touches turns to shit, he has not one accomplishment listed on his dossier that shows he has any sort of leadership skills, every business he has ran... bankrupt. Every academic accomplishment, purchased by Daddy. His military service, he screwed that up. The state he ran, almost bottom in the country on every measurable statistic for a place anyone would want to live... and now we have less freedom, we are busted deficit wise, America looks like a police state as compared to what it was before he got into office.

And if you ask me how I feel about this again I will tell you how I really feel[:D]

ncprincess -> RE: What If: How the Democrats would rule Capitol Hill (10/9/2006 8:39:59 AM)

I agree with LadyEllen....but let's go one step further...set them all up on a points system. If they don't show up for "work" (as many don't by looking at all that missed voting on bills and such) they would receive a point....6 points, they are "fired" and replaced with someone that is dedicated to his/her job.

Also when thinking of the spending....is it really necessary for the President (whether Dem or Repub) to have a full staff and professional chef on duty at all times? Think of the money that would be saved by the tax payers if the President and his family actually cooked their own meals and cleaned the White House (which they are living in for free for the duration of his term). The only time I think the staff and chef would be necessary is when the leaders of other countries would be in attendance for meetings.

Want a balanced budget....elect a single mom as President.
