ORIGINAL: Lady Alaria Hmm.... WtH actually said something I agree with. The comments that ProDommes are prostitutes does seem pretty off. If they are, then so are exotic dancers. Some dancers are prostitutes as well, so are some ProDommes. But by no means all or even most. Not all professional doms are "prostitutes", but they are all sex workers. As are streetwalkers and call girls, exotic dancers, phone sex operators, escorts, massage parlor attendents, and just about anyone who works in a professional exhibitionism capacity--from the most hot-n'-heavy pornstar to the waittress at Hooters. All sex workers have some problems and concerns in common, among them being social censure, the potential for violent or abusive behavior from clients and supervisors, and arbitrary legal crackdowns on their trade which are inflicted by government authorities at every level from the city council to the Federal government. Virtually all of the above are grounded in our society's childish intolerance and misunderstanding of human sexuality, in my opinion. --M Hello A/all, I was reading a fascinating article, although the magazine it was in escapes me, about a doctor in India who has succeeded in establish a trade union for prostitutes. His entire approach was based on the idea that a) The sex trade is not going anywhere anytime soon. b) Sex workers in India are becoming ill of HIV and other STDs at alarming rates. c) They are a professional service and should be accorded things like benefits, professional status, collective bargaining, scale pay, etc. He encountered a great deal of opposition, primarily from religious groups and other opponents of the prostitution industry who seem to believe if will somehow go away. But his main opposition was from the sex workers themselves. His whole purpose in doing this was to make condom use a demand by the prostitutes to cut the number contracting STDs. Their objection was that if they insisted on using a condom, the John would wander down the street to somebody else who did not insist. He ultimately won out. There is now a professional sex worker's trade union in India and condoms are a requirement. The statistical number of new cases of HIV in India dropped dramatically after this union became established. I believe he stated when talking about it that one of his inspirations was the Netherlands, who have sex trade workers unions, are provided benefits, paid holidays, etc. Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.
