ORIGINAL: defiantbadgirl Never expected job security? So it's ok for a company to terminate a loyal employee with a near perfect work record for an immigrant? It's ok for someone to spend years working for a company, then be booted shortly before retirement age? Social Security amount is based on the last 3 years of work, not an average. My father has worked for the same union since before I was born and they can't lay him off because of a little thing called seniority. He also couldn't be replaced with an immigrant before he retires.........legal or not. Why does nobody demand job security? Loyal hard-working employees who have worked for the same company for years deserve it. When I go to work, I have an unwritten contract with my employer. I do a job for them and they pay me money for it. Most states have "at will" employment now. This means that for any reason, I can leave of my own accord, and for any reason, they can get rid of me of their own accord (mind you if their reasons are unlawful I can sue for unlawful termination). Demanding job security gets no one anywhere. I'd rather have hard working people on my team than someone who sluffs around doing nothing, but is untouchable because he has "tenure." Bleh. Yes it is VERY unfortunate that many are laid off close to retirement age. In most cases that I have seen (I have been involved in several layoffs which included severance packages), these employees are offered an early retirement package. At least in California, there is a thing called a "protected class" and those over a certain age (it used to be 40 but it may be 50 now) fall into it. This occurred because "older" high paid employees were being laid off so that younger, less expensive employees, fresh out of college could be hired in their place. This had nothing to do with immigrants, and everything to do with kids coming right out of school and not requiring higher salaries. Hmm, I wonder then if we should ban people from going to school...? Anyway, in some cases such as engineering jobs, there may be a specialty skill required that an employer was unable to find in local and national advertising. In such cases, an employee may be sponsored to come from another country (the place I worked that did this brought a gentleman over from the Ukraine, and another over from Australia) for a limited period of time. They certainly weren't hiring unskilled engineers from groups of refugees. Most refugees work the jobs those in our country don't want to work. Tell me, do you want to pick procude for a living? Do you want to bus tables? Do you want to clean hotel rooms? I think you have your facts wrong. If you are worried about American jobs, then perhaps you can do your part to support American made products as opposed to buying outsourced products. I understand there is a concern in this country about how many immigrants we can support, but you have not given much in the way of examples to support your argument, other than to repeat what you think is happening.
