ORIGINAL: texancutie Actually the US programs that most tribes receive funding for is based on economic status. So one has to qualify that way as well. I worked for the tribes for a number of years, and ran one of those programs for that state's tribes. Now the tribes that actually make money on their own through casinos, luck as in oil wells, successful business ventures and so on....do their own thing. But those tribes are in the minority, not the majority. Most people on the reservation live in poverty or near poverty levels...sadly. And believe me, the tribes that make the big bucks because their casino is located close enough to a large population of people, don't share the wealth with natives that are not their tribe's members. My tribe has a casino, but our reservation is pretty much in BFE in Wisconsin. Therefore, not enough money is made to be processed into dividend checks for everyone, so it just all goes back into our tribe's social services and education programs. As it should. And you still have to qualify for those services. Which again brings it back to income levels and things like that. So the money does go to help the ones that truly need that help. Someone like me would never qualify for any of those programs, because family income puts me out of running. Not to mention I live off the rez as well. Now if I lost my source of income and my resources, house, etc....I would qualify. But I hope like heck that never happens to me. Texancutie, well that sucks! I'm from Massachusetts and in neighboring Connecticut the Pequot Tribe are all millionaires from their Casino! Bigtime! But, like you said they're two hours away from both Boston and New York and they have the biggest Casino floor space in the whole world I believe. Much bigger than the Casinos in Vegas. I've been there twice about 15 years ago and it was enourmous then and they've been constantly adding and expanding the whole operation. Top of the line shows and concerts, World class boxing matches, 4 star restaurants, from hundreds to thousands of hotel rooms. I lived in Reno,Nev for a year after I got out of the USCG and worked security at Circus, Circus. The Piute Tribe out there is mostly in poverty and live in trailers North of Reno up by Pyrimid Lake. I remember their poverty and alcoholism and reading in the paper one day about how the U.S. State Dept was saying they wanted billions more dollars for "Foreign Aid" programs! Funny, I thought that the State Dept was supposed to "represent" the U.S. to foreign countries not to be "advocates" for foreign countries to our government! Why would our govt rather give billions of dollars to foreign countries than to Native Americans living in abject poverty? That surely needs to change!
