Too funny.  I have never been compensated for being Native American.  Nor was my mom or her family.  We are also tribal members of a federal reservation.  I don't live on the reservation as it is way up in the middle of nowhere on Lake Superior.  We try to eek out a living and attend schoool like everyone else.

Texancutie, of course you havn't been compensated for being Native American.
Do you really think that the U.S. State Dept. cares about Native Americans?
To them you don't even exist. You guys are "Yesterday's News".
They'd much rather be involved in travelling 6,000 miles away and finding some so called "refugees" to bring back to the U.S. to the tune of $Billions of dollars to the Taxpayers.
"Give MONEY to Native Americans that we fucked over?" "How gauche!"

texancutie -> RE: WELCOME NEW AMERICANS! (10/24/2006 5:24:24 PM)

By the way...I don't believe in Reparations either.  We are all responsible for our own journey in life.

Legally, my children, who are 1/8 Mohawk, could go register with a tribe in New York and qualify for all sorts of US programs put in place.

When they asked me about it, I pointed out that they have all sorts of positive aspects in their lives (wealthy grandparents, reasonably well off father, excellent grades, etc.) and I would not necessarily recommend they take money away from somebody who does not have their entitlements.

One kid got a full scholarship for her intelligence to a great school.  The other one is out of high school next year and will probably get some as well.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

texancutie -> RE: WELCOME NEW AMERICANS! (10/25/2006 4:54:32 AM)

Actually the US programs that most tribes receive funding for is based on economic status.  So one has to qualify that way as well.  I worked for the tribes for a number of years, and ran one of those programs for that state's tribes.  Now the tribes that actually make money on their own through casinos, luck as in oil wells, successful business ventures and so on....do their own thing.  But those tribes are in the minority, not the majority.  Most people on the reservation live in poverty or near poverty levels...sadly.  And believe me, the tribes that make the big bucks because their casino is located close enough to a large population of people, don't share the wealth with natives that are not their tribe's members.   My tribe has a casino, but our reservation is pretty much in BFE in Wisconsin.  Therefore, not enough money is made to be processed into dividend checks for everyone, so it just all goes back into our tribe's social services and education programs.  As it should.  And you still have to qualify for those services.  Which again brings it back to income levels and things like that.  So the money does go to help the ones that truly need that help.  Someone like me would never qualify for any of those programs, because family income puts me out of running.  Not to mention I live off the rez as well.   Now if I lost my source of income and my resources, house, etc....I would qualify.  But I hope like heck that never happens to me.

Texancutie, well that sucks!
I'm from Massachusetts and in neighboring Connecticut the Pequot Tribe are all millionaires from their Casino! Bigtime!
But, like you said they're two hours away from both Boston and New York and they have the biggest Casino floor space in the whole world I believe. Much bigger than the Casinos in Vegas.
I've been there twice about 15 years ago and it was enourmous then and they've been constantly adding and expanding the whole operation. Top of the line shows and concerts,  World class boxing matches, 4 star restaurants, from hundreds to thousands of hotel rooms.
I lived in Reno,Nev for a year after I got out of the USCG and worked security at Circus, Circus.
The Piute Tribe out there is mostly in poverty and live in trailers North of Reno up by Pyrimid Lake.
I remember their poverty and alcoholism and reading in the paper one day about how the U.S. State Dept was saying they wanted billions more dollars for "Foreign Aid" programs!
Funny, I thought that the State Dept was supposed to "represent" the U.S. to foreign countries not to be "advocates" for foreign countries to our government!
Why would our govt rather give billions of dollars to foreign countries than to Native Americans living in abject poverty?
That surely needs to change!

Hello A/all,

I would venture to guess that this is because corporate profits and insider deals with foreign trading trumps people maligned and forgotten since they were forced off their land years and years ago.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

Sinergy, I have to agree with you there.
This is why we need REAL change in our govt. and not a "changing of the guard" from Dem to Rep or vice versa.
This two party system just isn't getting the job done!

In 1986, I learned that India has approximately 657 political parties represented in the Parlaimentary system.  None of which possesses a clear majority.

I am not arguing with you, popeye1250, I am simply pointing out that more is not necessarily better.

As far as taking power is concerned, "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely"  Lord Acton 1770.

I tend to agree with the poster who wrote that a person could serve a maximum term of 6 years in government, at the end of which they would commit seppuku to show their loyalty to the body politic.

Six years is enough for anyone!
I wish the Presidency was for 6 years, King George would be cleaning out his desk now.
It's going to be a LONG two years!

Sinergy, obviously having 657 Political Partys would be counter-productive.
But having just 2 Political Parties in the U.S. is counter-productive too.
I think 5 or 6 Partys in the U.S. would be a good thing as opposed to this "see-saw" thing where one party's up and the other down.
For tens millions of Americans like me neither the Dems nor Repubs have anything that we're looking for.

"obviously having 657 Political Partys would be counter-productive.

...as i rarely agree wholeheartedly with Popeye, i thought i'd have to chime in and...er....agree with him wholeheartedly on this point. It's the same in the UK......2 parties just can not represent in any sensible way the range of political opinion in a country. In practise all two party systems end up with a couple of virtually indistinguishable options.....at least in most policy areas. There is no room in such systems for minority views. Without some form of representation such views never get the 'airtime' they need to be tested, they become effectively ghettoised. Put all shades of opinion into the light and they can stand or fall on their merits. Leave them on the sidelines and even the most extreme and dangerous views gain the defence of 'never having been tried and therefore may be better than what we have now'.

Philosophy, so you guys have the same problem in Canada?
Oh, and Thankyou for your wholehearted agreement!
On Edit, Philosophy, wearn't you in Great Britain or Wales?
How did you get into Canada?

Arpig -> RE: WELCOME NEW AMERICANS! (10/26/2006 11:24:09 PM)

In Canada we have 2 main major parties: Liberal & Conservative, vaguely analogous to the Democrats & republicans; 2 minor parties: NDP (a socialist party) & the Bloc Quebecois (seperatists); and a whole pile of fringe parties (Green, Marxist-Leninist, Canada First, Constitution, Libertarian, Rhino, Whole World, etc., etc., etc.) that have yet to elect anybody.

texancutie -> RE: WELCOME NEW AMERICANS! (10/26/2006 11:46:29 PM)

Hey Popeye...I have been a guest of the Pequot tribe.  They have a huge freaking casino...though when I went for a conference they sponsored...many of us wondered what blood quantum they are operating under.  Was very interesting to see the older folks from other tribes slightly frustrated.  But that really is a Native fight.  Most Natives are not into super diluted blood quantums.  There are enough of us around that are still either full blood, half or just under that.  But that is for us to fight...not others that don't understand.  When I worked for the tribes I was frustrated seeing blood quantums that were 1/32...but that was a state tribe not a federal tribe.  The state tribes are not regulated to the extent of what the feds want.  So some of us that are federally recognized do wonder. 1/32 is not Native....that means they are of native descent but not much...lol.  If you understand fractions.

Texancutie, yes, you are correct about that 1/32 of bloodline!
The Boston Globe had an article about it and evidently the Pequots were a huge nation at one time but were slaughtered by the British soldiers.
So according to the article there were not many Natives with Pequot blood left anyway!
So, in order to reach out to all Tribe Members they decided to accept anyone with 1/32 Pequot blood as there were so few left- maybe a few hundred.

Philosophy, so you're in Canada now eh, Hoser?
