I don't know why the Marv Levy Bills never won a Super Bowl; you're right that the talent on those teams was phenomenal.  I think partly the explanation is that they were just unlucky.

But the Oilers were not in the same class.  The Oilers never had a consistent ball-hogging running game, and their defense had a way of getting lit up now and then (as in that famous playoff game--which was actually in 1993).  I forget, but didn't their pass rush really suck?

No, they actually had a good pass rush, DE William Fuller saw 4 Pro Bowls, DE Sean Jones ended up with 113 sacks and a couple of trips to Hawaii,  and Childress at DT went to 5 Pro Bowls; more often than not the secondary let us down.

And there's always the argument that both teams, using quick strike offenses, tended to wear their own defensive troops down.

I'd agree that Buffalo had better talent, but Houston certainly had enough to make it all the way, if all the cards had come out right.

Seems he had himself a nice little star studded B day Party in LA. And anyone who doubts that he is all about *TEAM* can just step back. He invited all his team mates. Seems only 3 showed up tho. [8|]

Yeah, that was a common criticism of the Bills, but I think that actually fit the Oilers better.  The Bills did have a running game that they used sometimes; the Oilers never had much of one--so far as I remember, anyway.

I think Katy and her rum and Pepsi had a good night last night:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers running backs are supposed to be big and strong, rugged and durable, perfect symbols like Jerome Bettis and Franco Harris of a tough-as-it-gets franchise. Willie Parker is much different, and he finds himself in their record book because of it.
Parker, a speed back in an offense built around power, broke the Steelers' single-game rushing record with 223 yards - a game better than either Harris or Bettis enjoyed - and Pittsburgh excelled as usual in cold weather by roughing up the offense-less Cleveland Browns 27-7 Thursday night.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/8/2006 4:50:58 AM)

Willie Parker had a great night.  The offense had a great night and thank goodness he thanked the o-line, they did a lot of work for him.  We kicked the Browns ass, but that doesn't say much.  Kellen Winslow is a jerk, did you see that late hit?  And then the next play where the ball was stripped from him (although it didn't count, it was justice).

Funny how our memories differ -- the first player I think of associated with the Oilers is Earl Campbell, and then after a few visions of him running over guys flash through my mind I can't remember much about their passing game.

edited to add -- oops, I missed the part where you guys were talking about early '90s and I know Campbell was long gone by then.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/8/2006 8:33:30 AM)

Yeah.

And the Browns certainly didn't live up to all my praise this past week.  But these Thursday night games are turning out to be not very indicative of a team's true level, and the Steelers are good enough to paste anybody when they're not turning the ball over.

caitlyn -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/8/2006 11:45:20 AM)

It seems like it's been that way all year, both in college and professions. I know I said something nice about the Longhorns (who I really only like because an ex-Longhorn pays my tuition [;)]) and they haven't won a game since. This same ex-player, back when the Cowboys went with Romo, said that Parcells was writing off the rest of the season.

I guess that's why I picked a lot of upsets in the bowls. It seems like that sort of year.

Who does everyone think is going to be in the Superbowl?

Ah, who knows?  At the beginning of the season I would've said Panthers vs Bengals.  But the Panthers now suck.  The Bengals have a chance, but the Ravens may be the ones.  I think it looks good the Cowboys as the NFC representative.

Hmmmmm.

Dallas against either Indy or San Diego, and the Ravens could make it, if their offense holds up their end.

Thanks Level, will you be dropping into this thread tonight, during the game?  I want to see some upsets today.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/10/2006 8:25:41 AM)

I'm very worried about the Jets game.  They always have problems with Buffalo.

N.Y. Giants at Carolina - Carolina for sure.
1:00 p.m.

Denver at San Diego - this should be a great game, but I'll stick with the Bolts.

It should be a good game.  Romo is smokin'.  If he can keep this peak going the Cowboys may go the entire way this year!

Yow! I misread those Jags, huh? Just from the clips I've seen, Indy seemingly has lost the ability to tackle anyone, at least in a Jacksonville uni.

Atl 7, Tampa Bay 6

Ravens 12 KC 0

Miami leads mbmbn's Pats 6-0

Giants 17 Carolina 10

Houston leads the Titans 14-6
