The most interesting football theory I've heard discussed lately by pundits is: There are no bad quarterbacks, only bad teams. Of course there are bad QBs, but the wisdom here is that a good QB can't carry the load on a bad team. Exhibit A: Jeff Garcia: Horrible in DET and CLE but getting it done in PHI. Exhibit B: Steve McNair: Two bad losing seasons in TN with decent passing numbers, now MVP in BAL. Exhibit C: Tom Brady: A slowed running game, an anonymous receiving core, and a sub-par season. Exhibit D: Peyton Manning: Two (2) All Pro WRs, excellent pass blocking line, MVPesque season. Great Cast, great performance. Will he win the Super Bowl, probably not. In sum a good QB on a bad team might look much worse than he is. A great QB (Manning) in a great system might not win the big games because of the overall team. A great QB surrounded by less talent becomes just a good QB (Brady). A good QB given the tools to win will take advantage of them (Garcia and McNair). A QB, in the end, is only equal to the sum of his parts. Oh, and BTW, I think Shanahan's move to Cutler was a mistake. He should have lived or died with Plummer for the whole season, unless and until the Bronchos were eliminated.
