LOL, the HUG. It's gotten more attention in some media arenas than the game, Pretty sad, eh? But such is the media.
I have a whole lot of respect for Mangini. I think he took a very very good opportunity and ran with it, I wish he hadn't and stayed with us, but who can blame him or deny him ?

This one is pretty funny, nice satire on the whole " big story".

For those whose teams are not in the play offs, check out whose bandwagon you should jump on:

http://playoffs.nfl.com/bandwagon/

I took the test Saturday night, in case the Pats were beat out by the Jets. Seems I am a Seahawks fan. Sorry, Level [&:].

UGH, I took the test...  [&:]
it says I ought to jump on the Bears bandwagon...
no thanks..  [:'(]

I like the Pats better, way better!

mbmbn,
Pretty cool, and I get to be a San Diego fan. Appropriate enough, I'll be laid back watching them and still have a nice day if they loose.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/8/2007 9:43:08 PM)

That's funny.  I'm pretty sure that's from the NFL Network--meaning the NFL itself probably isn't too thrilled with Belichick's displays.  Normally the commentary on the NFL Network is bland as mashed potatoes.

I think he's acting like a weasely little motherfucker about all this, but that's just my opinion.  I've lost a lot of respect for him.

Heh, they said I should root for the Saints.  I wouldn't mind rooting for the Saints.

I got the Seahawks.... *coughs and mumbles bullshit*

SlaveAkasha -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/9/2007 3:42:31 AM)

If my Colts defense would play as good all the time like they did against the Chiefs..we might actually have a shot at it.  I am hoping maybe it's something that will last into the next game..we shall see.

I know, but you have the Ravens.  They are so tough on defense.
mbmbn - thanks for the hug link.  Hilarious.
Also, I can't believe that both Level and mbmbn are Seahawks fans.  argh.  That team is so ....... bland.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/9/2007 5:00:52 AM)

I am slightly ocd and took the nfl test again.  The second time I got the Saints.  I can live with either of those (Pats or Saints).

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/9/2007 6:15:38 AM)

I am a little ocd ish too, took it twice, once before Pats win and once after.... got the Hawks both times, and the questions were different each time. I sort of like the Seahawks, but they certaily aren't going to be my bandwagon team, should the Pats lose. Philly first, then Saints. The Youtube hug cracked me up.

Colt's Def, stepped it up a notch, for sure. Like us, the next game is going to be a whole lot tougher then the Wildcard games. It would tickle me pink to have both our teams win and the AFCCG be the old rivals, this time played in the RCA dome. I'm keeping my finger crossed, but not sure if the Pats can pull of the win at SD. I am anxiously waiting to see the game plan BB has to stop LT and to handle Merriman. Actually no one stops LT, I should say hold him to under 100 yards. I think that has only happened once this season. I'm holding out hope we can confuse and rattle Rivers enough to squeak out a win.

LAM:
Eric left under a veil of accusations, some true, some un confrimed at this point. Both Mangini and BB come from the " Parcells  tree " and there is an unwritten code < you know that honor among men type code> that when you leave, you leave the players alone. As you know, Mangini/Jets FO went after Branch, and  he took Chatham with him.  Parcells wanted to go after Vinitieri upon his FA, but because it was a BB player and the honor code, he refrained and went with Vandy.
When Mangini first got the offer go  and talk to the Jets, BB is said to have tried to talk him out of it, Mangini told him not to worry, he wasn't leaving, then left.
He also took scounting reports, which has been a news item up here. for some time. I'm not so sure anyone really knew that outside of NE until they talked about it last Saturday during the game.
The unconfirmed rumors are that he took Play books, other scouting reports and a few other " team items" right before he went down to NY for his interview. I suspect that is true, since he was " locked out" of Gillette upon his return. < not a common practice>  He is also said to have tried to entice some of the asst. coaches in to going to NY with him. Add to that that Mangini went public and played the injured party in the NY media when he was locked out and you have alot of hurt feelings, feelings of betrayal and general ugliness.

So, for me, I completely understand BBs bitterness. It is far beyond the media portayal of Teacher being pissed off cuz Student went to another school. That kind of animosity rarely is as simple as it is being played. And people love to make BB into a villian.

So that is the reason, as I told you earlier that Mangini has the nickname he has up here and is viewed as a traitor. Not becasue he left, but the way he left. Same with Vinitieri. Others have left, McGinest, Givens, Law, Milloy, etc and we still love them and support and understand their decisions. BB talks to them all the time, off season, reg. season in person and on phone.

Unrelated, but related: BB apologized publically for " horse collaring" the photographer and said he was wrong to do it.

Katy:
It's getting pretty busy there in Pittsburgh. Whisenhunt is interviewing today, and Grimm  and Rivera
< Bears> have already been interviewed. I knew about those three, but didn't know they had a Vikings coach on their list. I also didn't know that Whisenhunt told the Falcons he wanted to hold on a decision until he interviewed with the Steelers. This article leans toward Whisenhunt or Grimm being next up for you.

It looks like Parcells is at least taking a few nibbles outside of the greater Dallas-FW area:

That's all I need to hear.  Why would he try to talk Mangini out of accepting a head-coaching job?  There are 32 head-coaching positions in the NFL, and many very fine coaches never even get a shot.  I just do not believe that you can have pure motives if you try to talk your assistant out of taking his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  I would have said, "Take the job, God bless, you've earned it, and I hope we beat your brains in twice a year.  Or three times if we both make the playoffs."

I agree with you LAM, but conversely I would expect Mangini to be up front also and say nothing rather then say don't worry, I won't be going anywhere. As I have said, I don't blame Mangini at all for grabbing the silver ring. I just think as far as the " fued" bullshit, there is blame on both sides and neither of them is above the other. Both behaved badly in one or more areas of the departure.

You know a year or so ago, there was this same media hype with Parcells and BB. When the Cowboys played the Patriots, it was the same frenzy. Rememeber the camera shot they had of Parcells on the sidelines, supposedly glaring evilly at BB? Rememeber the big story: Will they shake hands or not? The only difference is Jets/Pats are divisional rivals and will play each other at least 2 times a year, so it can be proliferated ad naseum.
And then one day a little 2 paragraph story came out, that Parcells had called BB to speak to him about a football/team realted matter, and it was buried in the sports section. The same thing will happen here, maybe not the specifics, but similar, and this distraction will go away.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/9/2007 8:35:22 AM)

We expect a decision by the end of the week; early next week at the latest, regarding the head coaching position.  The team has made it clear that they want either Whisenhunt or Grimm.  Either one will make a good fit.  I'm leaning toward Whisenhunt, but I won't be surprised if Grimm gets the job.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/9/2007 7:42:19 PM)

Did Mangini say that publicly?

Also, I meant to say--this whole "Parcells code" is bullshit.  If you're the head coach of a football team, your job is to do everything you can to win football games, including, if necessary, recruiting players away from other teams.  If you're not doing that, you're not living up to your contract.  The debts of friendship and mentorship are significant, but they don't include forgoing a chance to improve your team just because some fat asshole decided that you're supposed to leave each other's players alone.  Any player who is willing to switch coaches must have a good reason for doing so.  The pros aren't fools.

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/9/2007 8:20:03 PM)

Nope, he didn't. That fell into the unconfirmed area I was speaking about.
I hear what you are saying about the Parcells tree or code, but none the less that is the standard that BB, Parcells and the older guys who worked with the Giants org, hold themselves too. I don't really see it as inherently evil or bad to have certain standards you hold yourself, and the people you surround yourself with to. BB expected Mangini to honor it, since his entire career was related to those same people. < That is speculation, based on past practice>

We will probably never conclusively know what initiated the " fued". Belichick ain't talking, nor is Mangini. BB will be seen as the ogre in the whole matter, and that is just how it will play out. The fact that Mangini
* took* < could also be called stealing> scouting reports is just a non story. The courts/arbitraters will decide if Mangini/Jets acted unscrupulously in their pursuit of Branch and that will be a non issue too. Another small story buried in the sports section.

LAM: Any player who is willing to switch coaches must have a good reason for doing so.

LOL.. I agree, its usually called money.

It will be intersesting to see if there is a whole lot of recruitment of former players by the coaches who will be filling the vacancies this season. I honestly can't think of any coaches who have done that within months of becoming a HC of another team. Not saying it hasn't been done, I just can't think of any right now.

It's funny, I was reading an interview with Mangini in one of the Jersey papers today < online>, and Mangini said in regards to the fued... Same thing happened between Parcells and BB, and now they are friends again. He insinuated that  he expected things to play out the same way for he and BB.
I can't find the link right now, but will hunt around for it.

                            mbmbn

edited to add: The media made a huge deal out of BB not saying Mangini's name. But you rarely heard a word outside of NE, that Mangini referred to NE Patriots as " that other place". And that kind of sums up how I look at it. People
love to hate BB, so it's easier to give half the story than the full story. Also, it lends to what I said about bad behavior on both sides of the ball.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/10/2007 5:53:12 AM)

Mercy, I can barely contain myself.  The Colts at the Ravens, it doesn't get much better than that.  Feel the hate as the Colts return "home."  Also I can't wait for a coaching decision in Pittsburgh, it's all that is on the tv and radio.  Just hire someone (from within) and be done with it.
