Yup, this was pretty much the discussion. They were discussing whether or not Bledsoe should be a HOF er, given that his numbers are better than many of the other HOF QBs.

Ummm, Katy... I think I am gonna have to make you some Kool Aide Jello shots. Black and Gold , of course !!!![;)]

Bledsoe -

We're feeling sorry for Drew Bledsoe?

There are a few athletes in history that I've felt sorry for--Joe Louis comes to mind--but there aren't many of them, and Drew Bledsoe isn't one of them.

Awwww, LAM. I am a softie. It's more a human being thing than an athlete thing for me. He lived very close to me when he was here in NE and he was a great humantiarian. Community and family oriented, decent and kind man.

My feeling bad comes from a different place I guess.

But you say you rarely felt or feel badly for athletes. Even Darryl Stingley? I still get choked up when I see him.

When did Bledsoe win a title?  You mean when he was a back-up to Brady?  That doesn't count.

Oh, and yes, I do feel sorry for Darryl Stingley.

But not Drew Bledsoe.

Okay, we can take the title away lol.

Stingley........ that is a sad tale. And Jack Tatum doesn't seem overly apologetic for what happened. I saw him on an interview not long ago, he's lost a leg to diabetes.

NO !!!!! You can't take that title away.

1996 AFC Championship Title, NE vs Jacksonville.
You know, the year we lost to GB.[&:]

Just a couple of comments, Bradshaw did play in a different era, an era when db's were allowed to mug receivers all the way down the field.  Bradshaw was not very good his first few years, and the Steelers won their first two Super Bowls by running the ball and with defense.  But by the second two Super Bowls, Bradshaw and the passing game caught up.  In Super Bowl XIII, Bradshaw threw 4 TD passes and was named the MVP in the win over Dallas.  In Super Bowl XIV, Bradshaw was 14 of 21 for 309 yards, with two TD's and again was named MVP in the win over the Rams.  That's an average of 22 yards per completion, unheard of today.  However, in the interest of full disclosure, Bradshaw also threw 3 INT's in that game.

TB belongs in the Hall, Bledsoe does not.

I happen to agree with you. The discussion was pretty much academic, speculating whether or not the HOF would induct simply on numbers. I mean Bledsoe far surpasses Joe Nameth too, but he will never be remembered the way Nameth is.

And remember, Bledsoe came on in the second half of the AFC title game against Pittsburgh (sorry katy) after Brady was knocked out to rally the team.

Yep. Namath had that one shining moment, and it made him. His stats (and most of his teams) were not very good, I mean he threw almost 50 more INTs than TDs in his career.

I don't mean to be picky, but in the interest of accuracy, Joe's last name is Namath, a Hungarian name.  His grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from Hungary, and worked in the steel mills, as did his father.

And of course his numbers don't matter, Broadway Joe belongs in the Hall.

Duly noted, Dan. Namath it is.

I wasn't debating his HOF status, I was using him to illustrate that other things are taken into consideration.
Kinda like my Cowboys friend, Level said above me.

Marc, you do have my sympathies.

Thanks.

You can at least console yourself with knowing those Bills teams were first class,

True. Names like Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed and Bruce Smith are still spoken of with reverence around here. Jim Kelly still makes a name for himself with his charity works like Hunter’s Hope, which funds research on Krabbe’s disease (named after his son who, sadly, died of the disease last year) and a youth football camp. I had the privilege of meeting Kelly when I picked up my nephew from the camp once – he is one of the friendliest, one of the nicest guys you’d ever meet.

My favorite players, however, remain James Lofton (that man made catching a football look like ballet) and Don Beebe. Beebe is someone you don’t hear mentioned often because, truth be told, he was an average player. But... he had a can-do, give-it-your-all, never-give-up, attitude that resulted in his having moments of greatness. I was happy for him when he did win a Superbowl (with the Packers) in Superbowl XXXI. The man deserved it.

quote:

This brings the age old question of "is it better to have been in the Big Game and never won, than never been at all?"......

Probably. The parties I watched the games at were pretty memorial. What I remember of them that is.

And you guys did win two AFL titles.

Yeah, and both of them before I was born. Go figure.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (10/24/2006 6:28:10 PM)

Whoa, don't forget Cornelius Bennett and Darryl Talley.  Those were some nasty fucking linebackers.  (Dan Marino recently said the ugliest thing he ever saw on a football field was Darryl Talley's face.)

That's probably because Talley played his college ball at WVU, and Marino is a Pitt guy.  Big rivalry!!  And they were in college the same years, 1979-1982, so they played against each other those 4 years.

Dan

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (10/24/2006 8:31:28 PM)

Yeah, plus twice a year for several years in the old AFC East.  I don't think Talley got to sack Marino all that often, but he had to be one of the most disruptive linebackers Marino ever faced.

is it better to be lucky, or good, where football is concerned?
