Keyshawn.....his glory days are long over.

When exactly were his "glory days?"

I'm more curious to see how Randy Moss remakes himself in NE.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - He's only 5-foot-9, went to junior college, was a third-round draft pick and had trouble controlling his temper.
Steve Smith has overcome it all. And on Tuesday he cashed in.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Donovan McNabb had the same reaction most fans had when the Philadelphia Eagles selected quarterback Kevin Kolb with their first pick in last month's NFL draft. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6789002
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Giants quarterback Eli Manning got one of his offseason wishes — receiver Plaxico Burress showed up for voluntary conditioning. "I'm not trying to make a statement," Burress said Tuesday after catching passes from Manning. "I want us to be better, and I want him to reach his full potential, which I think would be great. I want to help him out. We're here, we're willing to work." http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6789002
PITTSBURGH (AP) - A judge dismissed an assault charge against Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Deshea Townsend after witnesses said he wasn't involved in a fight at a nightclub in March. "There were six witnesses, and four said he wasn't involved in the fight and two said they weren't sure who was involved in it," Townsend's attorney, Robert DelGreco, told The Associated Press on Monday. "Deshea said from the beginning that he was not involved in this fight, and he wasn't." http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6784000  AFC West Off-Season Review http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6785776

Still some free agent gems to be found
Dillon, Arrington among those who could help a team

David Carr traveled coast to coast this week looking for work. The former No. 1 pick in the draft signed a free agent contract with Carolina as he seeks to resurrect a career that failed in Houston.

Or did Houston fail him? The top quarterbacks usually get stuck with the worst teams. That was the case with Carr and Joey Harrington, who were the first two quarterbacks selected in the 2002 draft, both of whom are now backups after Harrington agreed to a deal with the Falcons.

No, I don't think Houston failed him -- the transition from college to the NFL is a crapshoot especially for QBs and it's almost impossible to tell who will live up to expectations. I recall wondering if Aikman would even survive his rookie year after the way the Iggles beat him up; I also recall Elway getting off to a rough start too (though he didn't quite go to the worst team because he threatened to go play baseball if they took him). They improved while others never do.

It's a lot easier to name top QB picks who were flops than it is to name the those who turned into stars. If it was easy to pick the winners, then Favre, Montana, Brady and others would all have been first round picks.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/10/2007 7:34:21 AM)

Oh my, it's hugely difficult to face the learning curve of a rookie qb.  They have to learn an entire playbook, bascially immediately if there is an expectation of them starting a game in the first season.  Some of them need to learn to read defenses.  The bar is so much higher, they are playing against a field of seasoned veterans.  I think it would be scary as hell.  To be wonderful in college is no translation to being wonderful in the NFL.

happypervert -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/10/2007 11:45:19 AM)

Yeah . . . actually, I suppose there is a slim chance that Carr could eventually become a star -- I just remembered that Jim Plunkett was written off as a flop after his early years with a bad team then came back later with another team to win 2 Super Bowls and MVP in one of them.

There may be other examples of career turn arounds like that, but usually if a highly touted QB doesn't make something out of his opportunities in the first few years he just may not get another shot.

happy, that might be the best example of someone needing to be in the right place at the right time. Plunkett flourished in Raider-land, as you stated. I think Carr could as well, but I don't think Carolina is the right place for him.

Gibbs puts 'voluntary' back in workouts
By JOSEPH WHITE, AP Sports WriterTue May 8, 9:30 PM ET

Jon Jansen spent the last two months working out in a barn.

Not just any barn, but a barn with a weight room he built at his home in Michigan. Instead of living in northern Virginia and fighting traffic every day to get to the Washington Redskins' training facility, the veteran right tackle simply walked out the door and did what he had to do to stay in shape.

"I was home the whole time, and I feel great, too," Jansen said. "If I'm here, it's 4-5 hours. If I'm home, it's an hour and a half, and I'm done. Then the rest of the time I'm with my daughters and my wife. It's what the offseason should be."

McNair gets DUI, though he wasn't driver
By TERESA M. WALKER, AP Sports Writer 50 minutes ago

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair was charged with driving under the influence Thursday even though police said his brother-in-law was behind the wheel of the pickup registered to the former Tennessee Titan.

Although McNair was just a passenger, he was charged with a misdemeanor under a Tennessee law that prohibits a vehicle owner from letting it be driven by someone who is inebriated.

MIAMI (AP) - Former NFL rushing champion Ricky Williams tested positive again for marijuana last month, which will delay his return to the league until at least September, a person familiar with the case said Friday. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6800614

PITTSBURGH (AP) - All-Pro guard Alan Faneca is upset at the Steelers' contract extension offer, and said Friday he is determined not to play for Pittsburgh beyond this season. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6800760

This has been in the media all day.  Alan Faneca wants out.  He has also said that he no longer wants to be team captain.  He and the organization are unable to come to terms on a contract extension; he wants to be compensated in the range of the top 10 for his position.  The organization is unlikely to let him go and want him to remain through February (end of his current contract).  I don't know if he's posturing or seriously unhappy with things.  He'll be a free agent next year, at that time they will also have to deal with at least 2 other big players - Roethlisberger and Polamalu.  Faneca did attend training camp this weekend, "because it's mandatory" and he didn't want to be fined for missing it.

Hi Katy [;)]. If Ben and Polamalu are up next year with Faneca, kiss him goodbye. No way on earth the Steelers give up either of those other guys, no matter how good a lineman Faneca is--- and he is good, and he'll get his money, just not in Pittsburgh.
