Status: offline 		Um, I don't use a spellchecker, have an occasional typo, and sometimes get whimsical with my spelling and grammer - purposeful.

I'll admit that someone who seems to have some mastery over their native language gives a better impression than someone who doesn't.  I'll also note that Shakespeare didn't always spell his own name the same way, and he's got something of a reputation as a writer.

Mostly, if typos turn you off - go to the next post/email/profile.  If that's the worst thing you have to worry about, you're living a charmed life.

Status: offline 		I don't know.. personally, I'm far more receptive to people who write at least close to properly than to those who don't use grammar or check their spelling at all. Especially when they mix in text speak...

It bothers me only if it is really, really bad.  I can spell perfectly but am a terrible typist.  I look at it but not with a fine tooth comb.

Shakespeare was a writer... 400 years ago, wiseguy.  They didn't have truly standardized dictionaries in Shakespeare's day, and that's why he and others spelled the same words differently.

This is pretty much all I was trying to say.  Everyone seems to think that my head explodes whenever I encounter a misspelled word I guess because I went on a bit of a rant in the first post and it came across the wrong way.

You make a fair point and with a small dose of modification you could be on to something. You know what it's like, all people like to think they have an opinion worth hearing so don't be surprised when a few head your way (and don't agree with yours).

In time, it will be like water off a duck's back.

Status: offline 		I've honestly never understood the mania in our culture with making a good first impression.  So what if you make a bad first impression?  If someone isn't going to look past a first impression, you probably don't want to be friends with that person anyway.  Just be yourself, and make whatever impression you make by being yourself.  You can't please everyone.
