I went to a place of business and saw one of the employees reading the message boards here on collarme.com.  It wasn't my place of business, I was but a consumer of the services they sell.  This is a place I don't frequent so I am not familiar with the person I saw reading this.  I just want to say that even though you might think you are being discreet when reading the boards, you never know when someone might recognize the pages you are on.  I did not say anything to this person nor do I intend to.  But please be careful because others might not be as discreet as you are about your lifestyle and interests.

I would think that if one is concerned about being "out" at work, the last thing they should be doing is visiting BDSM sites.

IT departments have ways of knowing what sites you go to.  People should know this. Even if your company blocks certain sites and this one is not blocked, they can still know you were on it and for how long.

They sure do LOL, but I found out the hard way. I was told if it happened again, sayonara job. This was a few years ago, and trust me, I keep to business now and leave the personal shit for home.

I know someone that instructs younger people..and they go on this site at work.  I tell them they are nuts, but they don't see any reason anyone would ever check their computer...

I hope for their sake, they are right.

It's not so much that they target someone's computer.  It's that they might have a particular program which reports daily on the top sites hit, and on the top categories of sites hit.  My company, for example, uses WebSense.  WebSense produces a daily log of hits to sites that may be of risk to the company.  CM came up as "legal liability" for some reason.

We generate several reports:
1. Top categories by hits (IT, News, Sports, Shopping, etc.)
2. Bandwidth usage (Streaming media, IM/Chat, File Transfers, Remote access, etc.)
3. Corporate Risk Summary (Business usage, bandwidth usage, Security risk, legal liability).

So, this report is generated and there is high usage in an area that doesn't appear business related.  So that area is tapped into, to see who is accessing it and when.  Also, if someone is monitoring WebSense during the day, Internet hits will show, and by whom, real time, storing it in 20 minute increments.  So let's say I'm an IT guy and monitoring it and gee, there's John, coming up as Legal Liability repeatedly in the last 10 minutes.  What the heck is he doing?  I drill down further and see this site - CollarMe.  John's going to get a slap on the hand for surfing into areas he shouldn't be while at work, AND I now know that John is into kinky stuff.  After work while I have some beers with my buddies, I'm gonna have a laugh with them over that. Oh yeah sure I'm an IT guy and suppose to keep things confidential...but do you really trust that I do??

It's really best to be safe at work, if you like your job :)

Thanks ownedgirlie, for the explanation.  My employer also uses WebSense, but I didn't know what information that monitored and recorded until now.  I'll have to keep this in mind...

Does this mean I cant post on here anymore. If your in a company that monitors such things then stay off it while at work. I dont let it interfer with my work. If like the poster said that she saw it on the persons computer then shame on that idiot.

I would not even dream of attempting to access Collarme.com at work and can't imagine why anyone would.

Our company has some type of program that blocks certain sites.  When you attempt to access them, you get a grey warning message telling you the site is blocked.  For example, you get this message if you attempt to access certain ISP sites and vanilla "dating" sites (not dumb enough to do this personally, but happened to someone in My department and he told Me.)  Nothing happens the first time, but I'm sure these events are logged and an employee would probably be reprimanded if they made repeated attempts to access these sites.

There is a second type of warning message that comes up in red, and I understand that any employee who gets this one is reprimanded immediately.  If they make repeated attempts to access this type of site, out the door they go.  There was a VP who attempted to access such a site.  The first time, he was verbally reprimanded.  The second time, he was written up.  The third time, he was terminated.  Why he was dumb enough to keep doing this after being reprimanded is beyond Me.

I have no idea which warning message would come up if I tried to access Collarme at work, and I am certainly not going to find out!

The Company I work for, AT&T frequently moniters their computers. If an employee is on ANY site even close to collarme, they will be terminated, no questions asked.

Welllllllll guess what!! I am at work! Yeppers, I am often on here whilst at my desk at work. Yep, da boss knows, so do several of the guys that work for me. As long as nothing affects my work nobody gives a shit. Right now, my desk is clean and all the boys are working. It's all good. If I get busy, need to go to the pressroom for an issue, etc.........the window gets closed down and I am back to doing what they pay me to do. I can just about guess what the boss is doing upstairs on his computer, hell he even yells at me to come up and look sometimes. He thinks my stuff is much scarier and more twisted than his however.

IF, I allowed this to affect my work performance, I would expect to be shitcanned. I don't so da boss and I have no issues.

i work for a major corporation with huge security in place.  There would be no way i would even attempt to log here while at work.  It would be blocked... period.  i have access to the internet, but cannot access my e-mail at yahoo or hotmail.  If there is any hint of a sexual nature or a 'dating' site, it is blocked.

i have had friends lose their jobs by accessing sites such as this while at work.

To take it a step further, if i am logged into work remotely (i.e. from home), i will not access this or any questionable site.  (i love my job).

Gosh! Thank goodness for small favors...i AM the IT dept. *grin  If it were not for this time during the day, i would not have anytime to be online until the wee hours of the morning! *smile  And, i CAN see what everyone else is doing online at any given time.  But i don't make a big fuss, i am not that type of person.  However, if their online activities are affecting the smooth operation of my network, they get a notice asap.

I worked for a place like that once.  It was awesome.  We could all basically do what we wanted, as long as our work was done, and trust me we were held accountable for our work.  No one cared what sites anyone went to.  Most of us put in 12 hour days so the bosses figured if we needed some diversion by surfing the web (no matter what kind of site), talking on the phone, whatever, it was ours to have.  I've never been anyplace like it since.

Just because a site is not blocked does not mean it doesn't trigger the net-guys.  The main CM site is blocked for me at work, but the discussion forums are not.  So guess what?  One day I came here to read a bit while needing a break.  Our network manager called me "What are ya doin' on the internet?" (We're friends).  He said my name was all over WebSense, and I was triggering "Legal Liability" left and right.  Apparently any time I changed pages, it counted as a new hit.  Every time the RSS feed changed, it was a new hit.  He asked, "What's this CollarMe site?"  I told him it was a discussion board someone told me about and I was fascinated by it.  Nothing false about that!

Just saying, if you work for a place that has Internet rules and you come here, odds are that in time they're going to know it.

Our network manager DOES make a big deal about it.  We call him the Web Nazi.  If someone goes to an "inappropriate" site, he notifies his/her manager and HR.  "I'm protecting my network," he says.  But really it's a control thing.  He's got everything blocked, not just sexual sites.

When I want to surf things like Collarme at work I use my laptop and plug it into the phone line. Its slower but bypasses the network.

As many here have revealed, larger corporations with real IT departments tend to monitor and regulate employees access to the internet.  Most government agencies do as well.  Smaller, independent, and/or entreprenurial businesses may be considerably more relaxed regarding what goes on on their computers.  I've worked for companies and agencies with real tight-a$$ restrictions and others that weren't so restrictive.  But in all cases if they thought what you were doing was interfering with the job, it was sayonara internet or sayonara job.

And in most cases, on a business computer, surfing the internet, like playing solitare, where a customer can see it, is very un-professional.

YIK,
- Geoff
