Laughing when in pain may have nothing to do with "having a good time' but may be more instinctual, or at the very least learned as a result of successful implementation. Researchers have proposed that a good laugh triggers the release of hormones and endomorphines, which are your brain's own natural pain killers. You get both a higher level of alertness and pain numbing at the same time. This is why so many cancer clinics and so on, advocate using humor as a part of the treatment. That laughing sub over your lap may be 'internally medicating" herself to deal with the pain- either consciously or not. For me, I laugh hardest when I'm getting caned. The laughter seems to come from somewhere deep inside and isn't triggered as a result of me thinking how much fun I'm having. There are times I've laughed because I was having a good time, but I think there's certainly room to understand that not all of it stems from that emotion.
