Rush has a lot of intelligence, he can be quite funny, and he can make a persuasive point, especially in writing (I guess the written form allows him a chance to think before "speaking"...)

But....

He can also be cruel, idiotic, arrogant, close-minded, and breathtakingly hypocritical.

I am with Level on this one, torn.  I am pro-life, but I don't like zealots in pretty much any form.  Stem cell research strikes me on a personal level, from both that side, and the side that has many diseases in the family that could benefit from it.  I have studied pretty much anything I could find, I have done it from both sides, and I am still not sure where I stand on it.  I wish I could say a perfect "yes" or "no"., but I don't have any way to do that.  For now, I will stay undecided, and hopefully both sides will sit down, and actually debate it rather than walk out, or over-dramatize things and I can come to a conclusion.

I am also not for the death penalty, not every pro-life person is.  Yes, I value life..even the life of a killer.  Not that I think they deserve to go free, but I personally couldn't pull the lever.. so I can't say someone else should.  I do think that our system if very lax, and should make prison life a lot harder than it is though.

As one who would benefit from stem cell research also.. this whole pseudo christian attitude just gripes my ass.  I watched my mother battle Parkinson's for 25 years.  It's not pretty.  One is totally alive and co-herent in a body that is frozen leaving one unable to even make facial expressions. Her father had it.  Her sister had Lupis (another disease to benifit from the research).

Every cell has a purpose.. We are not given the knowlege without the reason to use it.  Since when are people Gods to determine what purpose a cell comes into this exisitance?

As far as I'm concerned- Limbaugh is the poster child for the Republican party and the best argument for Pro-Choice I can think of!  He should kiss Michael J's ASS!  Rush's ignornace was/is unbearable.

I am sorry that a particular religion's views on the treatment of life forms is distressing.  Perhaps non-christian views on such topics just gripes a chritian's ass, too.  Works both ways.

However, isn't a happy-medium on this topic the option of umbilical cord stem cells?  I think all sides are in agreement on that one.  Is there no room for compromise?

And, btw, I think Rush is an ass, also.  However I think calling him an argument for "pro-choice" is a bit morbid.  But that's just me.

I agree, Level.  Just because we have the knowledge of how to do something, does not mean it is the right thing to do.

Grinding babies rhetoric does indeed sound like zealotry to me, but that is my sensiblities. It has the net effect of making me think of Pat Robertson... but that is just me, and my opinion. I have seen enough people with "baby murderer" signs to last me a life time because I used to have to pass the family planning clinic here... and that is the kinda thing they would say

Ah but I disagree.  We are allowed to talk about anything we wish.  And to be so "dismissed" by those who do not wish to engage in intellectual discourse is not such a loss...is it?

It's why I stay out of many controversial discussions.  Most just want to attack the opposing side, and come across as a bull in a China shop, as opposed to really trying to understand the other, so as to better express their own views.  There is too much "I'm right and you're an idiot" going on, and those discussions don't interest me much.

And yet...agree or disagree...such sign carrying is an expression of free speech, is it not?  Personally I don't think such signs do much for their cause, and only feeds anger and animosity, but is only one point of view allowed?

Hello A/all,

A couple goes in for in-vitro fertilization.  The harvest 10-15-20 eggs from the donor.  They fertilize 9-12 of them.  They implant 3 each attempt, freezing the rest.

The couple conceive first time out.  There are 9 fertilized embryo on ice.  They are eventually destroyed (that would be thawed and thrown in the garbage) because the couple doesnt want them.

So Bible thumpers scream about using fertilized embryos to get stem cells, all because it destroys a human fertilized egg.

How long did it take them to figure out that it is in keeping with Biblical laws to throw fertilized embryos in the Biohazard waste bin, and an offense to God to use them to get cells to cure sick people with horrible diseases?

Did they turn on their brain when they woke up the morning they had to make this decision?

Sinergy

I never said they have no right to carry a sign or they are not allowed to their feelings. I have carried a sign, but I have no right to impede people from getting medical care. I have been to the same clinic for a different procedure, not all women that go there have abortions. I should have the right to go get medical care without being called a baby killer. Now, I know they have the right to say it, I have the right to think they are assholes.... just like people have thought the same of me when I held my peace signs...

It seems like the very people that are so upset by abortion and stem cell research tend to not want to pay for those babies to have medical care and food stamps... it is rather hypocritical, love all the babies until they are born indeed

BTW, I am not militantly prochoice, but I cannot say much about it until all the children in this country are well cared for with medical insurance. I just cannot judge people that feel they are ill prepared to bring a child into the world. Poverty needs to be addressed first

Why are you implying idiocy, also?

My christian sister chose adoption, because she doesn't believe in-vitro, for the very reason of throwing fertilized eggs out.  Many, many "Bible Thumpers" have this same view.

I proposed in a previous post that umbilical cord stem cells are an alternative, and why can we not compromise and use those?  However, that seems to have been overlooked.

Exactly the case Sinergy, I would add that I have heard some religious pundits express that these viable embryos need to be adopted out. So basically if you are an infertile couple that has some frozen embyos around they cannot be destroyed, they have to be adopted out, meaning your genetic offspring are being coopted by others. I have a problem with that concept, not everyone would be comfortable with that.

I didn't mean to imply that you thought they didn't have a right to sign carrying.  And I do agree with you about the tactic not having positive effects.

I disagree though, about not wanting to pay for those babies, but that's getting off topic.
