Gauge, you must be misinformed. SirKenin said it was okay and he's an expert. And even if someone followed his advice and completely fucked up their machine it would be their own fault for not knowing what they are doing!

And remember folks, get a second machine to run a Linux firewall instead of something far simpler like sitting behind a $25 router (which itself probably runs Linux and a NAT firewall).

One last geek question.... with all the discussion on updating, and making sure everything is in top notch working condition on our systems, I'm updating my Internet Explorer (right now I can't add Firefox to my system... and I'm not sure it would help now that I've seen some of the feedback from those who've added it in an attempt to access the website). In so doing I'm getting stopped by this error message:
! Windows Update Setup
A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before running Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close.

I have rebooted multiple times with no success as I get this messege each time. I have no other programs I know of waiting to install... I've run all my diagnostic tools multiple times, including CCleaner, Adaware, Scandisk, Defrag, etc, etc..... all with no change. My qustion is this.... does someone know of a way I can bypass this error and so I can accomplish what I need to do?????

Here is how you fix that problem:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session ManagerLocate and delete any PendingFileRenameOperations values in the key.
Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
Quit Registry Editor.
Run Internet Explorer 6 Setup.

First of all, if you do not understand or feel comfortable editing your registry it is best not to screw around in there. You can remove things that should not be removed and that could spell disaster for your machine. If you DO follow the above advice then before you EVER do ANYTHING in the registry , you should back it up. Just do not go in there and make changes.

There usually is merit to following the directions precisely.  But yes, always make a backup.  If I did not tell you to delete it, do not delete it.  Simple.

No offence, but you are making yourself look like a bit of an idiot.

I run a linux box for a specific reason.  I also run servers for specific reasons.  Does that mean you should too?

Second, a NAT is not a firewall.  That is what makes it seem like you do not look like you know what you are talking about.  NAT is Network Address Translation.  Quite simply what it means is that it takes one IP on the WAN and divides it up into a subdomain of private local IPs on the network.  You can actually get past that if you are an expert hacker.

Third, routers like the Linksys WRT54G do use Linux.  Others do not.

Thank you for your help, both Sir Kenin & Gauge....

I AM very comfortable working with my computer systems, and know enough to ask for help or search for the answers when I'm unsure of what I'm doing... and it's always excellent advice to remember to back-up.

So far I've made no changes in my registry as I have come up with two 'Session Magagers" in the area in which you directed me to. Neither seem to have...'PendingFileRenameOperation' values. (Tried to paste a screen shot here so you could see what I'm looking at.... but apparently I'm not familiar enough with this message format to make that work.... sheesh.) Where do I go from here, if I may impose upon your Geek/Tech knowledge and expertise just a bit more??

Again, my appreciation for everyone's patience and assistance,

budderflywings~

Moderator Eleven....

Thank you for informing us that management is indeed aware of the problem so many of us have been experiencing with accessing the main site. (It's nice to at least have some acknowledgement.) Could you tell us when Management anticipates the issue will be resolved?? And also, what is the nature of the problem.... was something changed recently on the Home page or the whole site, which makes it impossible for some of us to access it?? Also, is there anything we could personally be doing on our end.... for example.... if some new Java script was added, or something along that line... perhaps it would help us to update that specific area of our systems?? That way we don't have to fish around in dozens of different directions trying to guess at the right thing to address. Your reply here to my questions will be appreciated, and thanks in advance for a quick resolution to this very frustrating problem.

Regards,

budderflywings~

Second, a NAT is not a firewall.

They are routinely called NAT Firewalls, don't blame me for it. I don't disagree with your other points about it though. Of course, some routers do actually have firewalls on them. Firewalls are always ultimately software running on some kind of hardware - a point you seemed to deny earlier in this thread.

But whatever...

Just because people call them "NAT firewalls" does not make it right.  You know better than that.  There is no doubt that NAT increases network security, though.  But let us stick to the facts and keep the distinctions clear.  Some routers do incorporate a firewall solution as part of their internal OS package, but they usually specify somewhere that they offer the firewall as well.

Firewalls are technically software running on some kind of operating system to be specific.  My firewall is Smoothwall, and it is based on the Linux operating system.  The fact that it uses hardware to operate is a moot point.  Show Me one program in existance that can run independent of some type of hardware.

For the past week I have been getting a white screen when I log into gmail.com. However, when I then click the return-to-previous-page button, my gmail surprisingly does load and I can see and read and send my emails.

Thanks, MD. Glad to hear you're all fixed up there!

I'll probably be upgrading sometime in January. Until then, maybe I'll just take a break from the other side for a while. I'm due for one anyway.

So thanks to CM for helping me break my addiction...

Same here... Looks like no more collarme.com for me either until I can get a new computer. At this point I'll probably be better off waiting for the newest version of Windows to be released, sometime next year from what I've heard. No sense upgrading to XP when it's going to be obsolete in a short time anyway.

Anti-Virus software... don't have it? GET IT! A great, free AV program is AVG from www.grisoft.com . If you choose the free version you get free updates and a damn nice program as well. Throw the guy a bone and donate or buy the registered version, he really wants people to be safe and secure on the Internet.

Heard of Spyware? Adware? Malware? No? Well, look these terms up and get familiar with them. I use three different spyware programs on my computer.  They are Spybot Search and Destroy, AdAware and Spyware Blaster. These are great, free programs that will help keep your privacy intact and also help you keep that old machine running as best as it's little, tired CPU can go. MajorGeeks has them all.

Also AVG now has a free spyware program being offered alongside the new 7.5 version of the AVG Free. So far it seems to be doing it's job quite well, and being from the same source I trust that it will be just as helpful as the anti-virus software.

Greetings, subfever, dekley...

And all the rest who have been experiencing problems logging into the Collarme main site recently. Just wanted to let you know of a solution that has worked for me. It's not a total solution as not everything works as it did before, but most of it works. Most importantly it got me back into the site. I should note however that when I made these changes I was no longer able to log on to this Chat Forum. I can read everything, just not log on and make comments. But that's just my computer. This morning I changed my Java settings back (see below) so I could log on and give you this information. If it helps anyone I'll be pleased to know. I think what has happened is something that has been suggested a couple of times in this thread... that something in the Java Scripting has been changed (updated?) on Collarme recently which left some of us unable to log onto more than a blank page. Even though the solution below isn't specifically for resolving 'blank pages' this is what worked for me. It can easily be reversed if it doesn't work for you.

Thanks again for everyone's help and patience.

Good luck!

budderflywings~

INTRODUCTION
loadTOCNode(1, 'summary');

This article describes how to improve browsing performance in Internet Explorer.
MORE INFORMATION
loadTOCNode(1, 'moreinformation');

The most common cause of poor performance in Internet Explorer is large pictures, sounds, videos, or other multimedia files that appear or are played automatically when you access a Web page. If you are using a slow connection to access the Internet, these files may take a long time to appear or be played.

To improve browsing performance in Internet Explorer, you can prevent pictures, sounds, videos, and other multimedia files from appearing or being played automatically when you access Web pages. To do so, use the appropriate method.
Internet Explorer versions 5, 5.5, and 6
loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');

1.
Start Internet Explorer, and then click Internet Options on the Tools menu.

2.
On the Advanced tab, click to clear one or more of the following check boxes in the Multimedia area:

Show Pictures (prevents pictures from appearing automatically) (This box  I had
to leave the check mark in, otherwise I couldn't see the photos on Collarme.)

Play Sounds (prevents sounds from being played automatically)

Play Videos (prevents videos from being played automatically)

Play Animations (prevents animations from being played automatically)

3.
Click Apply.

4.
Disable the AutoComplete feature for forms and passwords:

a.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

b.
Click the Content tab, and then click AutoComplete.

c.
Click to clear the Forms and User names and passwords on forms check boxes, click OK, and then click OK.

5.
Click the Security tab, and then click Custom Level.

6.
Click Disable for one or more of the items in the following Active Content areas:

ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins (prevents Internet Explorer from automatically using items that show active content)

Java (prevents Internet Explorer from viewing Java programs automatically)

Scripting
NOTE: If you disable ActiveX, Java, and scripting, you may not be able to view Web sites that use these features.

7.
Click OK, and then click OK.

Well... thanks for the help budderflywings, but it doesn't appear to be working for me. I still get the blank screen. I'll play around with the settings a little bit more, but I think CM is history for me until I can get a new computer.

Thanks again...
