Maybe it's the difference between "Passive Annoyance" and "Active Annoyance". If you're driving along in a car, down a smooth road, the engine is humming, you're comfortable in your cushy seat, and your mind is relaxed and happy. Reading is usually like that, moving along smoothly. However, if the road fills up with speedbumps and chuckholes and sudden turns, and you suddenly have to switch from a passive state to an active one, watching for the next bump and hole and curve and taking the appropriate steps to keep your car performing as smoothly as possible, considering the conditions. It's annoying. Active Annoyance. Worthy of a complaint or two, especially is asked directly how we feel, because it is directly and physically affecting something we're doing. If you're driving along in that same car, down an equally smooth road, but groups of overweight people happen to be gathering in parks or pastures along the road, maybe having picnics, or just out for a walk. The performance of the car does not change any, the way you must handle it doesn't either. (Nobody's walking into your path, the overweight people are all far off the road, no danger of physically hindering the ride.) The car continues to sail smoothly along, nice ride. But, if you happen to be annoyed by the sight of overweight people, well, that's Passive Annoyance. Nothing they are doing is directly affecting anything you are doing or experiencing, other than you don't like what you see, but your life as it is at the moment is unaffected. You could complain, but a lot of people are going to be Actively Annoyed because you did. Maybe being annoyed by something that doesn't really affect you will get you criticized, but it's okay to criticize something that is affecting you physically and mentally. That was kinda fun[:D]
