Well said.

Although Capitolising "Him" or "Her", when referring to the dominant partner doesn't bother me one bit.

if a sub has been instructed by a cyberDominant to use such a tool, then it doesn't bother me :) each to their own. i personally don't care if someone calls me Ma'am, Syr, Whims, whims, or for dinner at 4 pm [:D] . their behaviour will show their respect [or not], just as their attention to detail will be shown by using "u" ie: "r u there?" that usage diplays an innate laziness, to me, if a sub can't be bothered to spell out a 3 letter word! LMBO, once again , JMHO

I don't think a dislike of it is "irrational" at all.  It is improper grammar.  How is disliking it "irrational?"

Well it is improper grammar to refer to anyone but the Biblical Lord above as "He" but whateryagonnado?

LordODiscipline -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 5:06:59 AM)

I also dislike it -and- find it a bastardization and artifice in the language, not pertinent to leather, only useful for people who are on line and definitively a significant hinderance in proper communication.

Nothing irrational about it - people who do this are as annoying as someone shouting because they believe that will assist with someone who does not speak their language... silly and without a basis in reality.

The name or reference to God(s) is commonly capitalized in many languages - nothing improper there at all depending on the culture.. and, since the bible has always signified His name in such a manner, it is correct punctuation and accepted by grammarians as such.

I just feel like my brain's riding over a bumpy road when I try to read a sentence full of slashes.  I usually start feeling a lot of disrespect for the capital letter fanatic who insisted on typing or made someone else type this way.

mistoferin -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 5:59:16 AM)

Trying to read it is all stuttering and echoes. Yes, I find it extremely annoying. Your post was actually painful.

LotusSong -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 6:14:49 AM)

It's a wonderful way for those that use it to self-aggrandize themselves assuming that the reader is too stupid to figure out WHO their post is addressed to.

Saying "that is how they were trained"  is a poor testament to the dominant that trained them.  This goes double for the third-person Tonto speak.

However, be careful  These people were probably taught to fart on command also, understanding that it was ancient, European house  practice of the 'true submissive'.

Wow, can this actually be done???? I want that training manual !!! I assume that if you can teach them to fart on command you can also teach them to NOT fart on command. I have a few men and a very odoriferous dog that I would like to practice on!

This is pretty much my opinion, said much better than I was going to. I try to type as my english language teacher taught me to write. And, I don't have the patience for cyber idiots.

So you can't tell someone they annoy you because they are fat, but it's ok to tell someone they annoy you because they do slashy speak?

Just sayin...

SweetSarijane -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 7:30:36 AM)

It's very irritating to me and usually screams cyber player when I see it. I do attempt to read posts with slash speak but if there's too much in it, I just scroll past. It's a shame too when you think about it because aside from the slash speak the post could be very helpful or educational but is spoiled by slashes making it difficult to concentrate and read what's said. It actually makes my head hurt trying to read it and that's pretty bad. To each their own, and in my opinion slash speak is cyber junk and annoying. I don't do cyber "protocol" like that. It's just not real to me nor does it have any meaning to me and it does tend to drop my opinion of the one using it. It just comes off fake to me and like someone trying to prove how submissive they are.

When done in the manner demonstrated above, then it does become annoying.  Overall though...~shrugs~...in the list of things that annoy me and the importance of the reasons for annoyance, this one falls very close to the bottom of the list.
If I am communicating with someone in private and they are using this, I am likely to say something only if it becomes too much and third person speak is added on top of it.  Usually,  I will request that they do not use quite so much of it when they are writing to me.  I try to understand that this is a way they may have been requested to write by a former dominant or even a present dominant.  If they cannot or will not, then depending on the person themselves, I either let it go or I stop communicating with them in writing.

I have to agree somewhat with LA in my curiosity about something though...why is it O.K. to denigrate those who use this or the capitalization/non-capitalization writing but not O.K. to say something to the obviously overweight dominant/submissive who is putting another spoonful of a 4 scoop dish of Haagen-Dazs into their mouth?  Is it because we "know" that the people who do this are definitively trying to "prove" their submission or dominance and in other case, we don't know the real motivation behind their feeding themselves something extremely fattening?

Yep, absolutely.

LaTigresse -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 8:48:46 AM)

Well yanno.......IF something about someone's appearance bugged me that much I generally would tell them. My graphics guy didn't believe in deoderant, something about pheromones. I told him "dude, you stink! Take a bath and use deoderant" Hell I even bought him some. When I had a customer service rep that started dressing inappropriately for work, I told her so.

 Fortunately most people that are fat, well yeah, they know it and are prolly more annoyed about it that anyone looking at them so, to tell them would kinda be redundant. Besides, it doesn't bother me if someone else is.

BootBlackBlast -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 9:03:13 AM)

The slash speak drove me nuts when I first came onto this site and others for the lifestyle. I can understand the respect aspect that it at times can convey and I can see it's use in the chat rooms when referring to ones sub or slave and/or master or mistress. Master please you are cutting off my circulation. or you will suck my cock now, and it had better be pleasing or you will spend the night in your cage in the closet. But to say W/we got some new toys last weekend and W/we wanted to try them out. So W/we took O/our new toys on vacation with U/us, is just stupid. It takes so much longer to type. So I propose that we Tops that don't like this retrain all those subs who feel that typing like this is necessary to show respect.

HalloweenWhite -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 9:08:15 AM)

I use it cos I like it. And -usually- not every word is capitalised, just ones refering to a person who's orientation you may not know, for example :"How are Y/you". or when you are talking to both Domme/Dom. and sub. for example "Hello A/all".

windchymes -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 9:30:39 AM)

Maybe it's the difference between "Passive Annoyance" and "Active Annoyance".

If you're driving along in a car, down a smooth road, the engine is humming, you're comfortable in your cushy seat, and your mind is relaxed and happy.  Reading is usually like that, moving along smoothly.  However, if the road fills up with speedbumps and chuckholes and sudden turns, and you suddenly have to switch from a passive state to an active one, watching for the next bump and hole and curve and taking the appropriate steps to keep your car performing as smoothly as possible, considering the conditions.  It's annoying.  Active Annoyance.  Worthy of a complaint or two, especially is asked directly how we feel, because it is directly and physically affecting something we're doing.

If you're driving along in that same car, down an equally smooth road, but groups of overweight people happen to be gathering in parks or pastures along the road, maybe having picnics, or just out for a walk.  The performance of the car does not change any, the way you must handle it doesn't either.  (Nobody's walking into your path, the overweight people are all far off the road, no danger of physically hindering the ride.) The car continues to sail smoothly along, nice ride.  But, if you happen to be annoyed by the sight of overweight people, well, that's Passive Annoyance.  Nothing they are doing is directly affecting anything you are doing or experiencing, other than you don't like what you see, but your life as it is at the moment is unaffected.  You could complain, but a lot of people are going to be Actively Annoyed because you did.  Maybe being annoyed by something that doesn't really affect you will get you criticized, but it's okay to criticize something that is affecting you physically and mentally.

That was kinda fun[:D]

LMAO
Now that's funny. Thanks for the laugh.

Addressing the OP, I don't care for the slash speak. I'm able to read it a bit easier than before, so it’s hardly a bother to me now. Personally, I prefer attention to detail to be in some other constructive form.
I'm guilty of some of the short-cuts, such as OP, LOL, WIITWD. I can't see not spelling out an entire three letter word though. It's a small irk, nothing more. I really enjoy seeing someone who has a grasp on writing well and uses proper punctuation. It’s admiration for something I suck at.

Someone asked, where’s the tolerance? There is much that I do tolerate, but I don’t think that equates to being required to tolerate everything that is put before me. If we all had to tolerate everything put before us, all subs would be able to talk back, sass, be snippy, be in control at all times and we’d just have to tolerate it. I think not.
