Nice post.  But the word is bowel.  I hate it when you use the wrong consonant.

I'm sorry, benji. that should have been "Y/you".  Wait...Y/you are C/canadian.  So that should have been "E/ewe".

Though it does not offend me, I tend to find it distracting.  Often I'll just state to the writer, that when s/h (*grin) writes that there is no reason, when chatting, or writing to me to do the slash or the repetative "Sir" or "Master" thing.  I explain that titles are things earned, and ought not to be given too freely.  Oftentimes I find my point of view taken gracefully, and then there seems to be a more relaxed conversation which allows me to know "the person" better.

In "real life" I have seen times, at a dinner, where every sentence that came out of one slave's mouth was "Sir, may I (ask for the ketchup...etc) and though tolerant, eventually someone, usually a dominant, will lightfully say "Sir, may I request that your slave be granted permission during this dinner to not say "Sir, may..I."  That usually solves that.

In most cases i find that using  slash speak etc... is a symptom of what i call the "Domlier/subbier " than thou syndrome.

Much like  those who do extravagant dominant, or submissive  cyber gestures in forums online, and especially chatrooms.  It's like they are trying very hard to prove how  dominant or submissive they are.  I think we all know who we are without having to resort to that, and frankly  some one who insisted on me behaving in that way, would probably not be the right some one for me.

This is not to say that that I can't like or respect the thoughts of those who do so. But those who do it in excess are sure to make me roll my eyes, and it draws attention away from what the person is actually saying if i have to decipher all the slash speak or even slave speak.

That really did sum it up for me in a polite way.

i used "slash speak" as a search phrase and pulled up 18 threads, the most recent in May of this year.

The bottom line is S/some P/pl use it and O/others seem to have an irrational dislike for it.

i happen to use it and like it.  Feel free to block my posts, but honestly, i don't think there's one original comment to be made on the subject, and N/no O/one ever changes T/their mind, as far as i can tell.

I don't think a dislike of it is "irrational" at all.  It is improper grammar.  How is disliking it "irrational?"

I was wondering the very same thing...  I haven't read the rest of the thread, but this was my gut reaction as soon as I read her post here, and others in the past under the nic of pinkee.  I just don't see a preference as being irrational - it's just not for me to judge.

edited to add:

I don't use slash speak on the boards, however, I use it in my journaling out of respect for my Daddy, who quite likes it.  As for me, I think it's kind of annoying on the eyes, but He likes it, and it's not like I use it in all my writing (i.e., work, personal writings, etc.) everyday, so it's not a big deal...  But calling someone's opinion "irrational" because it is not aligned with one's own, IMHO, is irrational.

gooddogbenji -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 6:19:46 PM)

Actually, preferences are quite often irrational.  In this case, for example, liking it is mostly based on a gut feeling of "I'm more sub," whereas not liking it is easily justified based on readability, grammar, disrespecting subs, and people not always fitting into boxes.

benji

Many Greek and Roman scribes where originally slaves and played a major role in the development of the written language. Lower case letters were developed first , then punctuation and finally upper case letters. Upper case letters were thus used to accent the body of text. Since slaves were property they did not capitalize their names but would capitalize the names of their owners to make them stand out. The poet e.e. cummings adopted this as a sign of respect when he would write his own name. The cyber world caught hold of this and corrupted it into the form you see today.

Short answer = Yes, long answer - yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!
Seriously though, even though it makes my eyes go a little funny and I find it somewhat more difficult to read, its not a problem if in the end I found what ever was writen to be useful, fun or interesting.

Lordandmaster -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 9:46:02 PM)

This statement could not be more wrong.  For one thing, you don't mean "lower case" and "upper case"; you mean "minuscule" and "majuscule."  And factually you're incorrect too.  The Roman alphabet had no minuscule, and Greek minuscules developed centuries after the majuscule.

Lordandmaster -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 10:03:59 PM)

There's no war, because I'm right and it's not a matter of opinion.

Emperor1956 -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (11/10/2006 10:29:12 PM)

LaM is correct as far as I know.  Further, her statement about E.E.Cummings' use of the lower case is a total crock.  Cummings was insistent that his name be spelled with regular capitalization, and was irritated when his publisher printed galley proofs using "ee cummings".  The way he punctuated and wrote his poetry had NOTHING to do with "respect" or how he wanted his name printed.  (this from a 1992 essay by Norman Friedman, a noted Cummings biographer).

Isn't it amazing how a computer and a link to the Web lets everyone be an instant, phony expert on things they know nothing about?

I once said that the North fired the first shot in the civil war, but to be fair to me I had eaten a lot of ice cream that night and my brain was frozen[:D]. I will usually look it up to make sure I am not talking out my ass. But I think everyone can do that once in a great while.

Ah, that happened in the city I was born and raised in.....Charelston, SC. The firing on Ft Sumter unless you want to split hairs and say it actually happened when the south fired on the supply ship, Star of the West, 2 weeks earlier as it tried to supply Ft. Sumter. Useless trivia, I know.(Swear, I didn't look this up.)
